Per reverendcaptain idea, let's talk about when Georg's comings and goings, or how he leads/follows (?) the ladies in his life...
Have you noticed times when he's often leaving Elsa behind...or he's trying to catch up to her...or when she goes first? How is this different with Maria? I could totally spew out a bunch of things knocking around in my head (can you say STORY FODDER!!! ), but instead I will put them in a notebook for later and let others chime in.
Leaves Elsa behind #1 - my primary piece of evidence that they "didn't" in the "Did they or Didn't they poll" ... first time I noticed this is when they first arrive back at the villa and Elsa gives him the puppy dog eyes and "searching just like you" line...and Georg pats her hand and heads for the villa (i.e "nope, nope, nope...!"). He's up the stairs well ahead of her. So much for chivalry!
Catches up to Elsa - when he's flustered! I am thinking more along the lines of catching up socially. Case in point, after the puppet show when Georg tells Maria what a great job she's done and seemingly forgets Elsa is there, he solidly lands back in the present and quickly grabs onto her and tries to regain his equilibrium. There are several other examples in the movie when he does this.
Coming and going with Maria - obviously, the cinematography makes this harder to judge - for example, when Georg and Maria walk off stage at the festival. Those two are going forward together, side by side. The way Georg holds onto her is very different from how he moved about with Elsa...
There's so many others, so it will be fun to chew on them for a while!

One of my favorite “goings,” if this counts, is when he is taking leave of Maria after introducing her to the children, and she stops him in his track by blowing the whistle. He whirls back to face her, the verypicture of annoyed disapproval. How dare she interrupt his exit? “Excuse me sir, I don’t know your signal,” she snarks at him, and he responds with an icy, “you may call me captain.” He does a kind of double take before striding away, his back straight and his bearing formal, but I’e always liked to think his insides are already in chaos.

This idea was all yours Chris&Byng , and I love it! There are all kinds of comings and goings after the puppet show. Georg leaves Elsa behind to go talk to Maria. Then, once she follows and he remembers that she's there, they walk out together, but held at a distance. Someone in the puppet show thread ( augiesannie?) made the comparison of Georg taking Elsa's arm to a teacher escorting a misbehaving student out of the room, and I agree. There is no warmth to this walk at all. Then Georg is happy to let Elsa keep walking out the door, waits back for Maria, and does that adorable little uncomfortable bow, which is the same one he did a moment earlier when Elsa interrupted their conversation. It's like he doesn't know how to react to her when others are watching. He wants to acknowledge her, but not too much. He clearly wants to be next to her or he wouldn't keep timing his comings and goings to make that happen. There is a lot going on before Edelweiss too. Maria walks up to Georg. Georg walks away from everyone. Maria follows him. And Elsa is left in the shadows lamenting over her harmonica. Elsa is left behind in the Apology scene too, as Georg scurries out of the room to chase after Maria. Though Elsa was never in Georg's mind in the sitting room at all, so maybe this doesn't even count as being left behind. This scene was all about the children, and then Maria. Oh, and we can't talk about being left behind without mentioning the "You are back to stay" scene. Elsa is doing everything she can to put herself between G&M, but when Maria walks up the stairs, Elsa is left behind again. Then once Maria is gone and Georg remembers that Elsa is there, he leads her away while walking a step up from her and absentmindedly patting her hand. Yikes. It's hard to be left behind when you are holding someone's hand, but that's what happened.

reverendcaptain well, that was awesome! I am glad you picked up the ball and ran with it. I was thinking a lot about times when Georg is socially behind and has to catch up - but then ends up leading Elsa along. Interestingly enough, it's always when he's got Maria in his sights.
* the interaction between Georg and Max and a glass of wine- when Max catches Georg intensely focused on Maria across the room. It's funny, though, with Max, Georg doesn't try to pretend how he's feeling, it's the classic case of "what-evs"
* you have already mentioned the puppet show and Edelweiss; then there's that delicious awkward moment after the Laendler. He shakes himself back to reality and then grasps onto Elsa like all is well and leads her back into the ballroom. THEN when Maria calls everyone to come and listen to the children, he's out of there like Wil E. Coyote after the Road Runner. He's in the group to watch considerably sooner than Elsa. When the song is over, Georg goes to interact with the older couple (after locking eyes with Maria, of course) and leaves Elsa behind - she's totally out of camera view until Max floats Maria in...then she's definitely trying to play catch up, although this time, Georg is doing his best to look like he doesn't care (cue the "you can if you want to, Fraulein" discussion forum).
* the balcony...granted, Georg thinks he's alone, but he starts off very focused on Maria's form on the landing, and then Elsa arrives. I have always thought Chris' body language in this scene was so telling - the startle at her presence (he's likely the last person in the movie to not be alert at all times; I think this shows his vulnerability)...and then the big sigh that you can hear if you have your volume up enough (I first noticed it watching SoM with headphones). He's catching up to Elsa again. But this is the ONLY time (I think) in the movie where Elsa stays ahead of him for a time -figuratively instead of literally, though. He's there, but he's behind her. She starts going on about wedding presents and he's definitely not with her..he tries to get ahead once unsuccessfully. Eventually he pulls up with a firm "Elsa..." and stops her rambling, and then that's the end of the two of them.
* The interactions with Maria are so different...in the garden after Elsa leaves. Maria gets up to give herself space and Georg lets her have it. Eventually he just gets off the bench and heads into the gazebo, slightly ahead and Maria follows. Once he realizes she is following him, he pulls up a bit and they are more-or-less side-by-side. And OF COURSE he's the leader in the kissing department (swoon). Ok, I will stop now

reverendcaptain and Chris&Byng these are such awesome discussions I’d like to use over on Instagram with your permission. If you agree and have an account I can tag you. I’m not really going to be able to do the Instagram thing for very long because I don’t know how to make clips which is what you really need and I don’t do tik tok. But I’m using screencaps.

I forgot all about this one! Poor Elsa. Georg has followed Maria out onto the terrace to dance with her, and can't even string together a coherent conversation after (clearly in a daze over the dance), and then all but runs from Elsa at the sound of Maria's voice at the other end of the ballroom. I should not get started on his desire to have her at dinner and how that played out. But it highlights to Elsa, for the third time in a few short minutes, that Georg keeps trying to follow Maria even when she (Elsa) is available and wanting his attention. Who is Georg looking at here, Maria or the children? Or maybe a better question is, who do you think Elsa thinks he's looking at? movie-screencaps.com/the-sound-of-music-1965/page/60#foobox-1/70/sound-music-movie-screencaps.com-10691.jpg?ssl=1

I'm pretty sure he is looking at his kids, maybe Elsa's expression is more "Oh no, not MORE kids!"
I get the feeling he doesn't notice Maria standing alone there till later in the song. He's bound to take a look at her to gauge her reaction to their show, but clearly finds he can't take his eyes off her...

reverendcaptain you know - now that you mention that screen grab, Georg has a totally different face than any other man in the crowd at that moment. Kind of dreamy-eyed, even though he is hanging on to Elsa's hand (but once the song starts, he drops her hand you can see Elsa hanging on to his upper arm).

I wonder how much kid time she was expecting on this trip.

He’s probably dreamy eyed over how wonderful his children are. Though, they are only flourishing because of Maria. So, they probably go together in his mind often. Poor Elsa gets dropped from his hand and his mind the second the song starts.

Having written the song, Maria is probably anxious to see if her plan to get Liesl a little grown up time is going to work. Do you think Maria thought it even had a chance of working? Or was it just a cute bit of entertainment? Do you think this the first time Maria has looked at Georg since this song started?

reverendcaptain funny you should mention the part about Liesl...the "champagne" screen grab where Georg says 'NO', you can see Maria looking at Liesl and looking very disappointed with the whole adulting part. She goes from being focused on Georg to looking at poor Liesl's reaction:
