I always wonder what the return from the Honeymoon was like and like how they decided to return.
There are some lines in here that are interesting. When Georg shows Max the Nazi flag disapporvingly in the background the children ask why they didn't call. Maria tells them they tried but couldn't get through. So I am guessing phone lines to other countries have been shut down. Making it harder for people to plan to escape. Georg tells Max they returned as soon as they could. So they definitely knew of what was happening. Probably read about it in a paper, and returned home as soon as possible.
Then come home to see a Nazi flag flying above their home... Ohhh boy. I can't imagine the anger Georg must have felt seeing that. Poor man, and Maria isn't stupid, she knows what's going on and probably disgusted herself. But I guess they try to put this bravado on for the children. Notice how Georg is hiding the flag when the children return, and throws it in the back of Max's seat? He's really still trying to shield them from that, which I really appreciate.
Thus why I never quite agree with some people when they thought Maria was "submissive" on the return home when the music festival was being discussed. She knows how on edge Georg is, and yeah ask about it once, OK, But I didn't see there needing to be a reason to push. At least not in that moment. Maybe if she got the chance alone she could dig a little deeper if Georg hadn't just gotten the telegram. Given the political state of the world especially Austria at the moment, I think it's OK to ask once and not push it.
I also love how Maria tries to go to comfort Georg after Max pushes once more about this being for Austria and the "Anschluss being "peaceful" we should at least be grateful for that. It's an INSANE like to me, and I just love how Georg rightfully snaps at Max Maria is concerned and moves to comfort him before Liesl delivers the telegram Rolfe sent.
I like to think she would have tried to soothe him by having the two of them go elsewhere.
