So I know movie wise Maria goes to the Von Trapp family home in the summer. As Reverend Mother tells her a governess is needed until September.
However the Anschluss happened on March 12, 1938.
So I am guessing there were chunks of time between scenes?
Which makes me wonder of the timeline movie wise.
I assume the Captain was gone for 3 weeks or so between the time he left for Vienna to bring back Max and Elsa. As we see a number of costume changes in Do Re Mi.
Then I am guessing a few more weeks between the return, the apology and the puppet show. Because we'd have to find the puppet show somewhere, and then practice the song and the puppeteering. Cause that isn't easy.
A few days between that and the party?
And at least a week until Maria returned again.
I am wondering if the engagement is supposed to be a few months like in February because they came back right after the Anschluss.

The timeline is really hard to reconcile with reality. When do we think the kids get out of school? Let's say June 1st. They run off Fraulein 2-hours and Georg calls RM. Maria arrives the next day. The last time the captain visited the baroness he stayed for a month. Though, I think this trip would be shorter since he isn't sure about how Maria is handling things. Still, Maria needs time to make play clothes, bond with the children, and teach them to sing. I like your 3 week estimate goldenbeauty. How much time do they need to get a puppet stage and plan a performance? Another 3 weeks? That puts us already in the middle of July. A party of that scale would take (2?) weeks to plan, I would assume. That puts us into August. I think she disappeared to the abbey for no longer than a week. If she is leaving September 1st, there are only 3 more weeks of summer left when she returns. Maybe 3 weeks seems like a long time without a governess, but not really, especially when they have their "new mother" to play with. So, when Georg asks "You are back to uh stay?" it is almost a silly question if he doesn't intend to have her stay on longer than the original plan. I personally think he already knows he wants her to stay forever... If they get engaged in the middle of August, how long until the wedding happens? I would guess months due to the amount of planning required and the need to not cause suspicion over a hasty engagement. I always picture them as getting married in October and the Anschluss happening (movie wise) in November. I only think this because Max is in town to organize the Folk Festival. He wouldn't be doing so much planning/rehearsing back in the late summer if the concert wasn't until March. Though, neither November nor March are great months for an outdoor concert, so it doesn't really work anyway. So, basically, I'm no help at all. hahaha.

Agreed, it's better to ignore the true timeline and enjoy the movie!

I think the only way both the movie and the real history work out is if Maria and Georg get engaged near the end of the summer and don't get married until February, but I don't see them wanting to wait that long at all haha. I imagine that the writers of the musical set the story in summer so that the kids wouldn't be at school, and they just didn't worry about the historical accuracy.

OMG I loved this thread, I’ve tried to work this timeline in my head so many times!
Not to mention that the real M&G were married for ten years before the Anschluss and had two children.
