Personally I believe that while she fell first, he fell harder. Let me know your thoughts!

Yes, I think she showed him a way to live which he had not encountered before, so he fell hook, line and sinker for her...

I think they fell simultaneously, but he fell harder, at least initially. I don't think she has much (any?) experience with being in love, so she is navigating through figuring out what her feelings even mean. He knows exactly what love feels like, and what pleasant companionship feels like, and what a one night relationship while he was in port feels like, and every shade in between. I think he understands relationships well, and can tell that Maria is what he and his children need going forward. There are hold ups - 1) Elsa 2) Society frowns upon marrying the help. Though, deep down, he is crazy in love with her for much longer than he would even admit to himself.

I think she fell in love with him first (doesn't look like a sea captain) - but her perception of him was that he was so completely unattainable...I think this made her more vulnerable in the end, but it also opened her soul to Georg who fell harder. At first it was intrigue, then it was how maddening she was, but then it was intrigue again... and probably for Georg, he's thinking "oh, she is going to be a nun - also unattainable"....
unattainable is the word of the day! How little they understood at the time it was all a show!

I think we often don't pay enough attention to the fact that for Georg, she is unattainable. Maybe that's why I don't really buy the whole "Georg is hot for her" scenario until she comes back and even then, he proceeds with caution. I mean he might BE hot for her, but there must be guilt and frustration mixed in there because he knows/thinks he can't have her. I agree that his intense nature makes it inevitable that he falls "harder," although I suppose there's a "harder" aspect in how Maria leaves the convent behind her and just opens up her heart to Georg and his family.

I think this 'unattainable stuff' is what makes the chemistry between them (well, one of many reasons it's amazing) so dynamic and it brings us all in to share their wild ride - and write stories about them, and talk about them here . Put these two people in any other place with more equal social standing, and it's probably a slam-dunk. Of course, Georg was not as high-born as his own first wife if you read his biographical information. I think this gives him perspective on unequal standing (society-wise) in relationships...but he doesn't want to crush her dream, even if he doesn't think she is suited for it, one would suppose.
I know there are a lot of FF stories that do this section justice, but do you think they ever talked about how unsuitable she was to be a nun? questioned her going back there? Something MUST have been said to give Georg the push to make it work in the end. Just the little line after the puppet show: "I don't think I'll make a very good nun" and Georg "oh-hos" after she said that. Is there an inside joke here? (Apologies if this is somewhere else or should be another post ...they just sort of blend in so nicely with the unattainable stuff")

As far as her suitability for the convent, I think that some chapters ago in the story I'm writing now, I had Georg tick through the vows (not that I'm an expert in nuns' vows). They've shared a few smoking hot kisses. So poverty, yes, he gives her that, but chastity, they both know better now, and don't even get him started on obedience. So this is one example but I would love to imagine other scenarios, especially kiss-less ones, where they talk about her unsuitability. I agree that he doesn't want to crush her dreams, and assuming she can't rewind and go back to being a postulant, I imagine he'd have tender feelings about that loss for her.
