Rewatching the Balcony/Something Good sequence, you find a pattern of mostly a soft blue/greenish colouring from the very beginning, when Maria walks down to the lake and Georg comes out into the balcony and sees her down below. It's all very harmonious until wham! in walks Elsa with her shiny red dress that feels completely out of place in the scene.
Could this be a subtle way of Bob Wise/costumes department of hinting at what is about to happen?

Yes, definitely! She looks amazing, but colourwise, she looks - well- a bit out of place and 'look at me'.
Similarly I think her mauve dress on the terrace when Maria returns from the abbey, is the costumier's way of showing her a bit 'off line' (in the sense that most of the clothes the kids wear have been brown/yellow/ green, and the Captain's grey/green/dark colours, and her dress is in a whole different colour spectrum).
But I adore the blue/gold/black colours of the gazebo, very sensual and appealing...

Also the tone of voice she uses when saying "There you are!" The mood called for softness, solemnity, reverence... and from the moment she walks in the exhudes an ease and non-chalance that are the exact opposite of what we just watched as Maria ccontemplated her future that had been completely thrown upside down in less than a day, and Georg contemplated Maria... Anyway, Eleanor Parker *chef's kiss*

You can see those divine gazebo colours in your avatar!
I suppose the turquoise dress that Maria wears is also distinctive (in the sense that it is a different colourway compared to what the others are wearing), to make her stand out.

But I adore the blue/gold/black colours of the gazebo, very sensual and appealing... This is an interesting thread to ponder. Elsa is definitely out of place in all of her fashion choices (relative to her environment at the villa), and it does draw attention to her, and the red number is showing A) how different she is and B) how stunning she is. However, in the end this is her downfall. Maria (apart from telling Georg off) goes about her business without a lot of fanfare. She is hesitant to accept praise ("if I could be of any help" or "Well done Fraulein - I am very, very much impressed" and she responds "oh, they're your kids, Sir") and is happy to not be the centre of attention. I would hazard to guess she feels somewhat uncomfortable when centred out. Then there's this whole colour mood - Maria blends in with the moon glow on the lake, the hues of dusk/night, and Elsa's ready for the gala and the big show. I think the wardrobe and the lighting choices are representative of the choices Georg is making that very night on the balcony - aligned with the contrasts, so to speak.
As an aside, I have always laughed at the way Georg almost rolls his eyes at Elsa when she comes trotting out and carrying on so. And he's rightfully annoyed at her sudden appearance (I love that "omg" sigh he makes right after Elsa says "there you are"...if you haven't listened, turn the volume up at this point. It's a sigh that gets your heart tippy-tapping!).

Georg preferring the blending in rather than the standing out - very fitting for someone who preferred to go into submarines rather than surface ships!

Oh yes this avatar - chosen all those years ago and I would not change it for the world. Most beautiful shot in the movie imo

Poor Elsa. She is trying so hard to win Georg back (she could tell she had lost him on the steps earlier) by being as glamorous as possible. Flashy dress, talk of extravagant gifts and trips, all hoping to show Georg all the marvelous ways she is superior to Maria, and it backfires spectacularly.

such a great prompt, serialshippersince4e. Maybe someone else mentioned this, but there is also Elsa's red suit for the beginning of her visit, like the lakeside walk (not a nature color) and the whole "sound of music" singing ... Chris&Byng, thanks so much for pointing out that sigh and eye roll and yet .. he is also somewhat kind and regretful in that scene, no? Maybe the sigh is, "this is going to be hard but I've got to do it??"

Resigned - kind - regretful...only Mr Plummer could combine all those in a few moments on film!
