You can choose more than one thing in this poll. Don't forget to leave a comment explaining your vote! Extra points if you think it's a gift AND tell us what it was.

i voted twice: i think he may have left a gift behind, instructions to make a small party for her maybe. i don't think he would get a pink parasol. he struck me as the kind that would think she needed something more practical... books, or colored pencils. and i already know i'm wrong so... yeah.
i also think he might have remembered, but didn't do anything. or possibly remembered too late.

I think he left a gift for her, but like lemacd think it was something more practical than a pink parasol. A man who didn't allow his children to play wouldn't give her something so frivolous.

Totally agrees with you.... On a side note... it has always bugged me that the movie never shows her birthday... I think it's so adorable when she tells Maria about her coming birthday.... (I know there are a few fan fics out there dealing with this... )

I could ALMOST see him remembering but doing nothing - brings back memories of the day she was born, etc. But yes, I guess he probably left a gift, the kind of practical gift the rest of you are suggesting. Do you think that the way she says "I'm going to be seven on Tuesday" is supposed to be another signal to us that her father is apparently a heartless wretch? (Like, duh, yes, augiesannie, why else would they have that line there?)

well, she was asked how old she is... logical answer from a almost seven year old. well, most seven year olds. my seven year old, bless him, would answer, "uh... orange."

My youngest turned 9 on September 15; she was telling people she was "almost 9" for the entire summer. She was asked how old she was, and I think that was a very accurate way for a child that age to respond. The sad part is that she made the gift request to the governess she'd only known for about 5 minutes :-(
And I like to think that at least her brothers and sisters acknowledged her birthday.

Yes, you're right, that is how a kid would answer. (I blame my response on the age of my children). But I don't think it helps our initial impression of the Captain. I'm sure Maria and the children made it up to her though!
