I thought about raising this issue under the wedding bells thread, but thought it might be easier for new folks to jump in this way. I never understood this bit of dialogue, during their lakeside walk with the riding crop:
BARONESS (laughs) How I do like it here, Georg. It's so lovely and peaceful. How can you leave it as often as you do?
CAPTAIN Ah, pretending to be madly active, I suppose. Activity suggests a life filled with purpose.
BARONESS Could it be running away from memories?
CAPTAIN Mm hm. Or perhaps just searching for a reason to stay.
His line makes no sense. Why would he go to Vienna to search for a reason to stay at home? Or he is searching for a reason to stay in Vienna? what?

if the line was 'looking for a place to stay' it would be much easier, maybe alter our perception of his feelings for elsa (maybe not). it could be a clue that he is looking for her to stay and be wife and mother and open a new chapter so he can close the old one. or not. you're right. kinda confusing. starting to understand how oscar overlooked lehman for his screenplay.

This reply had me laughing so much. I thought you were going in the direction of, "well, I tried Priceline, and everything else in Vienna was booked."
I do have this monograph on the screenplay I plan to share with you-all, perhaps that will answer the question.

I think his life lost all purpose when he lost Agathe. So, in that way, he was certainly looking for a partner who would make staying home worth it? In addition to understanding why Lehman wasn't Oscar worthy, it certainly illustrates CP's dislike of the character.

Yes, that's the most sense I've been able to make of it too. "I've been looking, restlessly, for something to make my life worth living." I'll have more to share from the monograph, but CP had a lot to do with the final shape of this scene, I believe.

It sounds so tantalizing when you mention it!

It sounds so tantalizing when you mention it! I set it aside but in honor of your asking, I'll dig it out soon and post some details from it. I also have an extras DVD with CPs list of suggestions but, not knowing how to download it, I've been too lazy to transcribe it. Got to do that for sure.
