I was curious enough to read a plot summary, and it says that she plays , "a young woman in love with an adventurous sea captain, Rafer Hoxworth, from whom she has not received a letter in over three years. " There's got to be a mashup in there somewhere.

one mash up at a time... i really want to see this movie. i fear it might be too sad to mash up, but... i could be wrong.

Yeah, I was thinking that when I watched it. I might add, there is a bit in a gazebo (not even half as romantic as TSOM)

Too sad. At least in this wine-induced stupor. I watched the whole thing after DVR-ing it the other day. Awful movie, Julie was splendid as always. Of course, Max von Sydow has the sex appeal of a doorknob, so....

there has got to be a very funny retort about wine and max von sydow's sex appeal but i don't know what it is.

What really cracks me up is that our darling CP and von Sydow are so often considered for the same roles. Really? Those casting directors must all be straight men.

I have a bit in my notes about Maria lingering, her hand on a doorknob, fighting off an irresistible urge to . . . well, we'll have to wait for that story to find out the rest. And that's all I could make of "doorknob."

CP's doorknob---actual knob on a door---has more appeal than von Sydow.

speaking of knobs... we haven't mentioned rolf much lately. Now he's a knob AND a tool? Who'd think with a hottie like Georg for a father, she'd pick such a loser?

he's always a tool. he's only a knob on days that end in 'y'. hope that clarifies things.

Reading through this thread cracked me up!
I have seen Hawaii several times. I have to admit, it isn't one of my faves. It is long and kind of boring and I was annoyed she died in the end. Also, the one song that Julie sang (My Wishing Doll) isn't even on the soundtrack (which I have - I have just about everything JA). Sigh....

Honestly, Julie is the only reason to watch.

Honestly, Julie is the only reason to watch. I've never seen it before. But I would like to see it because of the same reason. Is she in the whole movie or just a few scenes?

And just think, @charleybec, that movie only covers about half the novel Michener wrote.

well... you would really need a very large bottle of wine to get through that.

Depends---Julie was absolutely wonderful, Max von Sydow (or at least his character) is a bore; the story isn't that great. There are a lot of loose ends that just hang there in the movie, though apparently that is all taken care of in the novel.

I haven't seen it but YouTube has some stuff if you want a glimpse. Heather Menzies played her little sister didn't she?

I've seen the clips on YT. I wasn't sure if it's worth to watch the whole movie.

I'm more than happy to e-mail this movie to anyone who wants to see it - just shoot me your e-mail address (Infact I think that's why I started this board; lemacd wanted to see it.)
My take on it all: Jerusha (though played beautifully by JA) I found a bit of a wuss (although I forgive her, since it was the 1800s), Max von Sydow's character made me want to bang my head against a wall, I hated it when JA died and overall it wasn't interesting enough to hold my focus for three hours. Had Julie not been in it, I would've turned it off pretty quickly.
