This really makes me want to see it, not. LOL. Maybe when I'm really, really bored. Doubt that will happen in the next few decades.

Well, don't worry. I think that's about how often I'll be watching it

My take on it all: Jerusha (though played beautifully by JA) I found a bit of a wuss (although I forgive her, since it was the 1800s), Max von Sydow's character made me want to bang my head against a wall, I hated it when JA died and overall it wasn't interesting enough to hold my focus for three hours. Had Julie not been in it, I would've turned it off pretty quickly. I'm sure I'm the only one who ever wants to talk about Hawaii, but I have to ask... have any of you seen the extended version of Hawaii? Because, suffice it to say, Jerusha is badass. Like, to a level that boggles my mind because Julie pulled off her character to perfection, and she is an incredibly strong character, which is sometimes hard to find in the literature and reality of the time. She's the one with the pants in the relationship, and it is epic. I sometimes will just sit there cackling as Jerusha repeatedly hands Abner his ass. On my list of Julie's strongest characters, Jerusha probably falls right behind Lili, Mary, and Maria for me. I read Michener's book, and Hawaii actually only spans about a quarter of the book's story, maybe a third if I'm feeling generous. The epic covers the most likely section to weave a story/film out of, as the other sections are quite good, but need the context of the Jerusha/Abner bit to have any true meaning. I actually ended up enjoying the book very much, and I laughed a lot. Michener writes strong women, has a sense of humor, and it is no small feat to write the sorts of tomes he does. There's a real sense of humanity infused in his work. I enjoyed his style enough that I picked up some of his other books, so one of these days, I'll get on with it and read them.

There's an extended version? Is it available anywhere?

My copy is taken from a recording of Turner Classic Movies channel showing. Message me if you're interested in a copy, utility_singer. And anyone else, feel free as well. It's a much more coherent film with more nuance in its intended format, as so often is the case... Darling Lili comes to mind.

Interesting. Maybe I'll give that a try. I did know the film barely covered the whole of Michener's book

Too sad. At least in this wine-induced stupor. I watched the whole thing after DVR-ing it the other day. Awful movie, Julie was splendid as always. Of course, Max von Sydow has the sex appeal of a doorknob, so.... He really isn't very sexy, but I do think he's a wonderful actor. Also agreed WickedBlueStrawberry, if Julie were not in it. I would not have watched it.

well I just watched the shorter version today since some kind soul put it on youtube. I then immediately found the removed scenes and watched those too, specifically to look for a scene that mentioned, oh I don't know, something about what actually HAPPENED to jerusha other than a brief glimpse of a gravestone after skipping (presumably) several years. I admit I haven't read the book, so I don't know if her death is even detailed there. but I felt rather dissatisfied by how I watched 2.5 hours of her being terribly seasick, going through that difficult labor scene, and overall just having to deal with being married to a cretin like abner hale, and then that's all I got.
whew. ok. rant is over.
I agree that she is a much stronger character with all the roadshow scenes included. I also agree that julie was 10000% gorgeous in this film.

Agree. With All That! I re-watched it again in September (during my Julie movie marathon) and it is a well acted and put together film. It's just REALLY not my kind of film. I have only seen the long version (as opposed to the LONGER version) but I do want to see the scenes they cut out. So I guess I'll have to look them up. Good to know they're on Youtube.
Jerusha is awesome and Julie plays her brilliantly. I also feel Max von Sydow plays Abner well, but his character is another story. I guess Jerusha's untimely and abrupt end (which also annoyed me) is supposed to all link back to Abner, but I still don't like how it all happens.
Now my rant is over

yeah, it's definitely a departure from anything else she had previously done (admittedly only three films but still) and not everyone's cup of tea. in the beginning, she acted so proper and poised about everything that I was sure her character was going to be a pushover, but I was pleasantly surprised by how strong she turned out to be. a good showcase of her dramatic skills, which the general population likes to overlook again and again and again. especially that childbirth scene; that was... something else. wow

If anyone is interested, Hawaii is receiving a Blu-ray release in January 2016. I only found out because I was bombarded with fb messages about From The Terrace coming out at the same time.

yes, I did hear about that! I think I heard that both cuts of the film will be on there, but the roadshow will only be in standard definition.
