Oh yeah... that was very nice. You know, Gary Cooper and I have been known to watch the sunrise together. He really is my fave but in the immortal words of my grandmother, "that Paul Newman can park his shoes under my bed any time." Sigh. I love CP I really do. But Paul... Mine used the "wouldn't kick him out of bed for eating crackers" line.

Pretty good list. A few I've never heard of. Leslie Howard looked geeky; Fairbanks looked evil. I'm so glad to see OUR MAN so high up on the list!!!! I like Gene Kelly and James Stewart, too.

Is it just me, or are all those oldies much better-looking than today's insipid wusses?! That reminds me of a conversation a friend and I had, about there being a difference between, say, "hot" and "handsome". We came to the conclusion that there are very few actors etc. today who we would call handsome, but practically all of them from the 1960s-ish and before are! Gonna add another appreciation for Paul Newman and Gene Kelly, despite the fact Kelly died the month I was born... OH WELL.

Is it just me, or are all those oldies much better-looking than today's insipid wusses?! I couldn't agree more! It just seems as though the golden oldie's looked like men, give me Gregory Peck or Cary Grant any day over the young crop in Hollywood. These guys now look like they might wear the same size pants as me!

Oh they were most definitely better looking. They knew how to carry themselves and they dressed smartly. They were just a different breed of man.

Okay, so, fanfiction.net is owned and operated by the same people who run fictionpress.com, for those who weren't aware. I don't go to FictionPress ever because I think it's dumb to post potential publishable material on the Internet and I wouldn't even have a clue where to start reading, anyway. But, for whatever reason, I looked at the tagline of fanfiction.net today and decided to see what the other tagline was. Fanfiction.net: unleash your imagination FictionPress.com: let the words flow Take that, original fic. Fanfiction forever! We've got the ~*imagination*~ Dumb little thing that made me happy.

Totally agree about the actors in the older movies. I always preferred them even when I was younger. My family knows that I like the movie but no ones knows of my writing. It my own thing that I do in my own pace without any pressure or deadline.

My husband does not know I am writing TSOM fan fiction, but it makes me happy. Not sure I would like it if he were keeping secrets from me though! On the older movie stars - absolutely agree they were far more handsome and interesting characters than today. Gregory Peck is a favorite of mine - apparently he was considered from the role of Capt. vT. Very good looking and apparently a very nice person and a complete gentleman in real life. But I guess he would not have been able to give the role the edgy, brooding, bad tempered dimension which CP does so well.

Gregory Peck is absolutely swoon-worthy... And everything I've heard about him says he was just a lovely person. Him as the Captain though? There's a thinker.

No one knows about the real extent of my TSOM fondness. No one really knows that I write fanfiction etc. One friend sort of does know, but she thinks I only write Arrow fanfiction. I didn't tell her that with so many words, but I think she's figured it out. She even knows about my YouTube channel and that I make fanvideos. She has the url to my page, and she says she likes it.. Now about TSOM.. I think I'm one of the youngest members on this forum.. Perhaps even the youngest? My parents were toddlers when TSOM came out.. It's different when you compare this movie to, let's say the Twilight franchise. TSOM is not what you would call "cool" nowadays, especially around people my age or younger. They're like: Okay, big deal, and they start discussing the newest Thor movie or something. I mean, people find the movie sweet and have nice childhood memories of it, but that's it. It's like making an adult watch a Disney movie (one of my other guilty pleasures, I confess). They either love it or hate it. So I tend to discuss TSOM as little as possible, to avoid the stares and the blank face expressions. Not that I'm ashamed of it, but it's just so uncommon these days, it seems. One of my friends actually never saw the movie.. Now that's what I call impossible! Same with me! My mom owned the TSOM DVD and she told me to watch it. TSOM came out when my parents were in school. My friends have childhood memories associated with the film and then that's that. If you ask them, they will prefer Twilight over TSOM. They find the Twilight hunks much more macho. But I simply adore the film. I have watched it numerous times and I can proudly say that I am totally in LOVE with it. However, I haven't told anybody that I write fanfiction. Not even to my best friend or my siblings. Dunno why but I just didn't feel like doing it. And I donot intend to do so in future as well. That's one of my many secrets that I will carry to the grave

But Gregory Peck as CvT is a no for me because I believe that Julie and Chris share a natural chemistry onscreen. It's like magic. So for me, it's Julie and Chris only as Maria and the Captain!

I'm still in the closet about my TSOM fan fiction writing - after all these years!
And I'm STILL a Gregory Peck and Christopher Plummer fan - after all these years!

Forgive me, but are they blind? They are girly men compared to the likes of Plummer, Grant, Newman, etc.

Agreed!
Does anyone else notice an 'approximation of the sexes', as men become more girly and girls less so? This applies both to men's looks and fashion and behaviour (and obviously the opposite for girls). But I would say it is more extreme for the men.

I know, right? Comparison is just out of question. And honestly, I just can't bring myself to call Robert Pattinson a "Man". He is waaay too girly. Apologies to his fans out here. And another thing is that these men (CP, Grant, etc) didn't need to strip off their clothes or roam bare chested to earn themselves a fan club. I mean look at CP in TSOM - we never saw him with his shirt unbuttoned but those intense looks or the way he carried himself were enough to make us swoon

Yes, I have. I think it is a combination of things called "talent" and "charisma". Most of today's "stars" can't compare.

Yes, me too! Ben Hur was on the other day and I caught a few minutes of it (all I've ever seen of it unfortunately), and my mum said she thought Stephen Boyd was handsome; I replied that it seems like everyone in the 1950s looked like that. I said it as a joke, but really, men (famous ones at least) just don't seem to look the way they did back then. It's very odd.

Oh, I remember back when the big question was "who is better looking, Paul Newman or Robert Redford"? For me it was never even a consideration---and the fact that Mr. Newman aged so very well while Redford looks--to put it crudely--'ridden hard and put away wet', well... Just reading some threads that I have missed and I found this and I just have to tell y'all a true story about Mr. Paul Newman... I live in Atlanta and back in the day ( I am talking early 2000) Paul Newman kept a house in a neighborhood not too far from my folks. There is an ice cream shop in this neighborhood that has been around for years (best cinnamon ice cream eva!) and everyone stopped by there, including the delicious Mr. Newman. One day, my mom is in line behind him, and she claims she was trying to be cool and not say anything to him because he lived there and everyone deserves a chance to just be... I am sure she bit a section of her tongue off trying not to talk... Anyway she is behind Paul who is behind a woman ordering a cone. The woman hands over the money for the cone and turns around and notices that Paul Newman is behind her. She starts to gush and say how much she loves him and she's so flustered she can hardly stand and yadda yadda. My mother reports that he is very gracious to the woman. The woman starts to walk away and then turns back to the poor ice cream stand guy and says, "Hey, you never gave me my cone!" Paul Newman taps her on the shoulder and very sweetly says, "Yes, he did. You put in your purse..."

Totally loving this thread haha
Agree with a lot of the so called "hotties" at the moment being samey. They do have to get naked pretty much to get the attention. All my friends are all obsessed with guys like Ryan Gosling and Chris Pratt. And I'm like everyone I like is either over 60 now or dead. I have a big thing for Alan Rickman (especially in Sense and Sensibility), he could just read the telephone book and I'd melt.

Growing up I definitely didn't have the normal teenage crushes. I always had a thing for CP in TSOM and Robert Preston in Music Man and though not from the golden age, I've always thought Bruce Boxleitner was handsome and developed a crush on him from his days as Lee Stetson in Scarecrow and Mrs. King, but CP was my first true crush. I have a thing for a well dressed man, lol.

my sister was one of those people who always bought the Tiger Beat mags and cut out pics of the teen heartthrobs of the day and pasted them all over her room. I found it all so... meh. I never thought the conventional was all that. CP is definitely handsome by conventional standards but there is so much more to him that he doesn't fit whatever category that is IMO.

So I found this an interesting idea to ponder, that, even years later, I'd like to share my thoughts about it. I basically started shipping my first fandom and reading fic in my late teens, when widespread internet use had just come up - I remember that in the very beginning I didn't even have an internet connection yet at my student housing so I had to go to the university library/study facilities to get my fix... I even tended to save some favorite stories on floppy drives so I could take them home with me and re-read over and over again there! (Yikes, mentioning use of a floppy drive does make me feel old haha) It was some 1 or 2 years later (at this point I did have my own internet connection at home ) that I also started writing a little bit. This was in fact much stimulated by a few dear fandom friends I'd made in the meantime, but I kept it all very much to myself in real life. It's funny when I think about it, by now I'm in my mid thirties, and I have found that while I'm a very avid fanfic reader, I'm not much of a writer. While I do tend to have a way with words and English has truly become a second mother tongue to me, I simply lack the inspiration to flesh out a story enough to make it interesting. One thing that lasted from those early days though, are those first online friendships - those 3 ladies are now among my closest friends in real life, which we consider pretty special for sure! And while in the beginning we were always a bit hesitant to tell people how we'd met (back then knowing people 'from the internet' IRL was definitely considered a bit of a weird thing), nowadays we tell about it quite freely and easily, although the fic reading and writing thing is still something we don't really talk about to other people - it sort of remains our guilty pleasure! All this does make me wonder: how many of you know each other or have at least met in real life?
