If you look long enough you might find Elsa's outfits!

Dorothy Jeakins is a genius with wardrobe in this film! How each character's personality is reflected in their wardrobe. I love Elsa's warm tone contrast to Maria's blue tones. Elsa looks stunning in red, and that dress she tries so hard to wow Georg with. But I didn't pick that one as my favorite, nor did I pick the party dress (I can't stand that poofy thing). I picked the puppet show outfit as my favorite. That skirt is the ONLY time we see her in a long skirt. I personally am not a fan of floral patterns but I don't know I just liked that outfit, maybe it has something to do with the way that the skirt moves as she walks in it. She's moves very gracefully in it.

I did pick the red farewell dress. All right......I'll admit it..........I picked it because it's the dress she's wearing when she goes bye bye and leaves him a free man. In all seriousness I think she looks absolutely stunning in it and I think that this is just one more thing that shows how head over heals Georg is for Maria. He's standing in front of a very beautifully dressed woman in her own right and isn't even in the least affected by it or paying attention to it. I sure would have liked to have a been a fly on the wall during that dinner.

I have always loved that red suit by the lake...any woman who can rock a bow that close to her butt and look like million dollars gets my vote! How tall was Eleanor Parker? She always seems tall and elegant...sometimes I hate her a little Being 5'4 is such a burden, lol!

CP is only about 5'10", from what I have read, and even while wearing heels she's still shorter than him. I can only imagine her being around 5'6". I'm 5'8" so maybe I'm just looking at it from a different perspective, lol.

Wonder about her actual height.

I looked up both Eleanor Parker and Julie Andrews and Julie Andrews is taller than Eleanor Parker. Julie is 5'7" and Eleanor was 5'6"
I've always been a little self conscience about my height and I don't wear heels because if I did it would make me way taller than my husband who is only a couple of inches taller than me, if that. That, and I've never been that comfortable in them because like our dear Fraulein I tend to be a bit of a tomboy.

clarinetjamie, be proud that your tall! My husband is 6"3 and I have to wear heels when we go out lest he look like he's with his daughter or something

^ Be glad your above 5'! I had hoped to at least make 5' but that didn't happen.
I love this. Even before meeting Maria he's pretty conflicted about her. He certainly knows what he would like to happen. Enjoys spending time with her, flirting with her.

We haven't stoked up the membership of the Baroness Fan Club for a while, and I'm having a few withdrawal symptoms: here are a couple of pics to remind you of our favourite stunner...

I know I'm late, but I'm voting!
I have been spending all of my time in the movie observations, I didn’t realize there were character discussions down below. Awesome! Though you all seem to have everyone figured out, so I don’t have much to add.
I love the lakeside suit! It is so sophisticated and stylish and perfect for her character. It provides such a lovely contrast to Maria in her homemade dress soaked in lake water too. And to the children’s play clothes.
On a side note, how long do you think her hair is? It’s hard to tell since it is always up and…concreted..into place.
The party dress is my second choice. Not because I would like to have it (none of Elsa’s clothes are my personal style), but because it shows Elsa’s personality so well. And again, it provides contrast with Maria in her simple Laendler dress and then in her slip when they are alone in her bedroom.
Are you still accepting applications for the Baroness Fan Club?? I want to join! I like her more every time I watch the movie. She is such a needed character in this story, and wow does she play it perfectly.

Yes, members always welcomed! Numbers frequently dangerously low, so I'll see if I can trawl for a few pics of this sophisticated gal, so we can curry up support for our exclusive club.

How many outfits do you think Elsa has with her at the villa?
I guess that depends on how long she is actually there. At least a month right? A week to put together the puppet show production, then several weeks to plan for the party? I wonder how many dresses she packed and how many occasions she planned for. She could always go shopping while she was there if she needed new clothes. Though, Salzburg would not have as many fancy shops as Vienna likely.

She could always go shopping while she was there if she needed new clothes. Though, Salzburg would not have as many fancy shops as Vienna likely. At that time, there were no shops as nowadays...Rich and aristocrats had their couturier for making their clothes, and Elsa herself says that she has the finest one in Vienna. So all her clothes are hand-made. I bet she had a lot of fine clothes with her as her fine appearance was her great asset...

She must have had a lot of clothes for all that time...and a corresponding amount of suitcases!
I always wonder how she does her hair on her own? That sort of style usually needs a stylist or hairdresser of sorts ( as in the photo 4 posts above). Do you think she brought staff (as well as Max)?

Do you think Elsa brought her party dress with her from Vienna, hoping to have an occasion to wear it? Or did she have this made after it was decided that there would be a party? If after, do you think she travelled back to Vienna for this, or found someone suitable locally to make her a fancy dress? I wonder how many outfits she packed for her trip.

I'm sure she brought it in the expectation that there would be a party. So presumably she was disappointed that Georg did not seem to have planned anything, hence she felt the need to prompt him. Maybe this is where she felt him lacking? I assume that in the fast Viennese life she led, parties were a nightly occurrence, so maybe it brought home to her that in Salzburg things were a whole lot slower, maybe stopped?!
I can't help noticing that the most of the guests at the party are not nearly as chic as Elsa, and I am sure she is the only one who wears couture all the time, even in the daytime. I'm sure the kids' clothes reflect the normal daytime Salzburg kind of dress; Vienna always was, and still is, VERY smart, and the fact that Salzburg is 250 miles away means that clothes were all the more rustic.

that's true - a lot of the dresses at the party are sort of dowdy. I myself favor the explanation that Elsa went back to Vienna to have a dress made, because that gets her out of the house which is good for story writing.

And that dress she wore is VERY 'look-at-me', with the shoulder-pouffy-thing. Do you think she was deliberately trying to outdo the other guests?

She totally had to be expecting him to show her the town/ impress her with all the Salzburg had to offer. Then they never seem to go out (or have people in) at all. I think this shows through in her "why didn't you tell me..to bring along my harmonica." line. She is subtly saying to Max "why did I bring all of these fancy clothes and fancy expectations when all we are doing every night is children's sing-a-longs." And I agree that her party dress is very "look at me". She was absolutely trying to show Salzburg how fabulous she was. Do you think to try to win Gerog's friends over, so that they thought she was good enough for him? Or did she not care what those people thought and was just showing them how much better/more glamourous she was than they?

Sometimes I like to play with the idea that she actually hoped they'd be announcing their engagement. Jumping the gun, perhaps. Did you ever see the pictures of the board she had to lean up against between takes in that dress because she couldn't sit down in it? You know, most of her clothes are "look at me" - that long skirt she wears for t he puppet show/Edelweiss evening at home, the red suit she wears on her arrival, and of course the evening gown that looks good on her even after all that weiner schnitzel.

The pictures of Eleanor Parker on the slant board are her in the gown she wears to the party. I've never seen any others.
And yes, I have always thought that she understood the party to be when he would announce their engagement.

Yes! That's it! Is her pouffy thing on the other shoulder at the ball? Also, I love how all these wonderful seamstresses on set are...of a certain age...they must just love getting out and seeing all the stars in the movies!
