in one of my favorite fanfics, G tells M that his first courtship and marriage were like a smooth sail on a beautiful day, where there wasn't a doubt about reaching one's destination safely and happily (even if things went wrong later), while the second...was more of a wild ride, beset by uncertainty and fear (which they face even more of in their future ) but he wouldn't have it any other way. I don't usually like A&M comparisons but this one really spoke to me, there was something wistful and brave about the contrast.

I was thinking about Georg's backstory today. I have always pictured him as having wealthy parents that provided the best as far as schooling and material possessions, but that weren't there for him on a deeper level. I don't think he had much of a relationship with them, which is why he so wanted a good relationship with his own children, which he had before Agathe died, but didn't know how to have again after her death (until Maria showed up).
I wonder what his experiences were in the war. Was he haunted by memories/flashbacks of this (PTSD)?. Was Agathe his rock in managing this, which is yet another reason why his life fell apart without her?

How interesting...I used to try to work out a backstory for Georg to explain his dark personality which becomes transformed with a woman's love -either Agathe's or Maria's.
I came up with the idea that he was born into the von Trapp family as the fourth child, a long time after his older brothers and sisters. When it became apparent that his looks and colouring were not the same as his blonde family, all eyes fell on his mother (much younger than her autocratic husband). Due to unspoken questions about her fidelity, Georg was rejected by his party-going parents and left for long periods on his own at the house, and brought up by a young nursemaid, later known as Frau Schmidt. It was only after he had had a wonderful career in the navy that his older brother died, and he succeeded to the ownership of the house, to the disapproval of many in the family. So having suffered a childhood of loneliness, he is really only brought to life by the love of a good woman who loves him for what he is.
Sounds plausible?!

Wow Indigo! This is so detailed and interesting! You should write a fanfic about this. I love the idea of Frau Schmidt having been with him his whole life. Poor Georg though. This scenario would certainly explain the chip on his shoulder.

I have a few other ideas related to the story, but it would take so long to put together that I get a sort of intention anxiety when I think about it...!
But I did write a fanfic about Frau Schmidt's relationship with Georg when Maria disappears back to the Abbey, called 'Gone' under my name Indigobluewriter on Fanfic.net, for you to enjoy.

It's really fresh and creative - not the same old same old.
