OK, so this topic was brought up on the Facebook page and probably everything has been said that needs to be said (I ended up making a comment after being a bit upset by the initial post yesterday and my continual brooding over it while I was out on my run tonight), but just to bring it back to the positive, I just really want to thank each and every one of you (not for the precious gift you left in my pocket earlier today!! lol!!) but for being so encouraging with me getting out there and having a go at writing. While lemacd might joke about my "rock star" status (which I'll say again is very hard to live up to), I didn't find it easy to take the plunge and write and publish but everyone here is so wonderful and encouraging so it has really helped.
Not that I've had that much criticism so far, but I've noticed that when any sort of criticism is made on this forum (which I feel is very rare), it is always done with the best of intentions to help and be constructive, rather than hurtful. I guess at the end of the day, we are all doing this as a hobby and none of us are multi-award winning millionaire writers (or are we??) and I, for one, do this for my own enjoyment and hope others get enjoyment from it too.
So having said that... let me just finish with a big THANK YOU!!!

well, thank YOU of course, and all the others who have so generously shared their stories and encouraged me with mine. I can confirm that I'm not a multimillionaire at all, and not from writing fanfic, that's for sure.
I wasn't sure exactly what motivated her -- if you don't like a story don't read it, and keep in mind that some writers are very young and/or not English-proficient. I was curious about her screen name to see who she is as a reviewer. She might even be reading this right now as one of our welcome lurkers! I did like hearing from a new voice, always happy to have that even when I don't agree with what she says.
I also like the encouragement, I'm not sure I"d write all these stories if there wasn't a way to share them. As for criticism - putting aside the occasional flaming review, I don't think we share that much of it on ff.net, other than a kind word of suggestion. Like with WG, lots of people said, they wished it hadn't ended there, but thanked me for my effort. You're right that more of it happens here on the forum. If a story is published here first, I'll sometimes suggest a different word, or how adding a sentence or two might help. I don't see much point in doing that in a ff.net review since the person isn't going to revise the story. Then again, why don't I post my stories here first? I guess I like the element of surprise on ff.net, maybe I should get over that and post here first.
Anyway, that wasn't your point. THANK YOU for sharing your talents with us, that's the point!

Thanks for your comments Anne. I have to admit I originally wanted to have a rant, but that's probably unhelpful - I think we're all on the same page here about that FB post, so I just turned it into being a positive thing. Anyway...

Oh just out of interest, has she ever reviewed any of your stories? Haven't gotten any reviews from her for any of mine (unless she reviewed as a guest which could be anyone)

well, right. there are guests, and also, there are people on this site and ff.net whose real names are unknown - they could be the same people on FB.

i didn't mean to kick off a firestorm, if that is what i did. i really should have kept my mouth shut. i like that we have a happy place there and here and to ruin it would be the worst thing ever. i appreciate the encouragement so much and even the negative which is rare only because people are kind, not because it isn't warranted... i just think if anyone wants to write and post they should. it would like telling my children they can draw all the pictures they want but if it isn't art museum quality, i'm not going to hang it on the refrigerator. i mean, it's my refrigerator.

I see her point, but I agree that no one should tell someone they shouldn't be allowed to post stories. I have started reading a few, that I just can't continue reading. But I've started others that are pretty rough the first couple of chapters, but you can see the improvement as you read further.

Lemacd, you didn't start a fire storm. I was upset by the original posts but it took me a day or so to get up the guts to respond as well (whole confrontational thing).
Still don't agree with what she is writing but hey!
Glad you have ice Anne, I made a few trays before leaving home this morning.

Here are my thoughts about this subject, if you don't mind... I'm not on the FB page so I don't really know what the discussion is about. If I read correct it's about bad FF and how to deal with it. In my opinion no one has the right to tell anyone he/she shouldn't have posted their story. Of course you can have your own opinion but the person who wrote the story did it with all their heart en creativity. When I first started to read FF they triggered idea's in my head for some stories. But as English isn't my Native tongue and I'm not very confident with writing it kept me back. To a certain point where I was discussing some idea's with friends I made on the net. They encouraged me to just begin. They helped me so much. As some of you said positive criticism is the best way to help people, I totally agree with you. I read FF everyday, I like all Genres, Romance is my favorite. But I also like drama, humor, family, adventure etc etc. Not that fond of thrillers or Sci-fi. And rape is out of the question. Nope couldn’t read something like that. So I if you don’t like a story, just quite reading or try to give a feedback where the writer can work with.

Yeah, I think you got the general gist of the original FB post.
Hats off to you for writing in a language that is not your native . I studied French at school and I could barely make it through my yr 12 essays writing in another language!
As far as giving writing a go, I agree, just give it a try. I wasn't writing before I joined here in December and I've ended up writing heaps which I'm enjoying.
Head over to the writing prompts section. February has some story ideas but I think lemacd said that it may just be a paragraph or 2. Even if that seems too daunting, I'm sure no one will mind you going back to January writing prompts. There is a list of words and you write a sentence or two around that word (and I ended up using several of those for story ideas).

YES! try the prompts, even if it is just a sentence or two. we won't jump all over you. honestly, i think you'd be great at it, mireille

Thank you both for the encouraging words, I might try one in the future. @charleybec I would love to learn French. I live close to the border of Germany and Belgium. German isn't a problem at all. Although writing would be... lol I stick with talking. I'm someone who needs to do it and not only read it on paper. Maybe I should go and live in France for a while

My French is pretty rubbish actually. I did live in France for a few months as an exchange student in high school and studied French for the HSC but haven't spoken it since with the exception of the couple of times I've been to Paris (speaking is ok, understanding others speaking to me is another thing as I'm totally out of practice). The problem where I live (in Australia) is that you have to get on a plane for like a zillion hours to get anywhere to speak anything except English. I can read it enough to work out the general gist but that's about all.

I can sing in French, German, Italian, Spanish, Latin, and of course, English. I've also learned specific words to songs in Hebrew and Russian. I had to learn each of their linguistic rules in college. Now, I sound great and can order off a menu as if I know what I'm ordering, but unless there's an English description I won't know what I'm eating until it arrives. LOL German and French were my favorites. Especially German, it's so easy to sound badass with all those consonants.
Sadly, I can only speak English.

I work in a restaurant and during my studies we had to learn all the foods in English, French and German. Are you a singer?I'm sure it's a stupid question as your name says also

LOL yes, I got my degree in classical vocal performance, so I'm a trained singer. Now I just sing on Sundays with the band at church.

I actually have a DVD of me playing Maria. It is lousy quality, and the audio doesn't match the video. I'll see if I can load any of it on the computer so you can see.
Mind, it WAS 31 years ago!
I think there might be something from church up on youtube. I'll look and see if it is still there. It wouldn't be just me, though.

I have a video of me singing in Grease when we did it for the school musical when I was 16. Yep... I think that one will remain hidden.
