So I have everything Julie has ever recorded. But I always love to find new and rare stuff. Two of my favourite albums are the Broadway series albums (recorded in the early '90s). Firstly, the Music of Richard Rogers and then secondly, the Lyrics of Alan Jay Lerner. I had always heard rumours of Julie doing a third in the series on Gershwin which she never did due to the botched throat surgery. Always a massive disappointment to me as I would have LOVED to have this. Anyway, I was doing some JA searching the other day and I found this - the likely album cover for the Gershwin album is it had ever been done. I almost died!!! I have never seen this before (and there is not a lot of Julie stuff that I have never seen before in some form or another). Anyway, just wanted to share what might have been....

it is too bad that they can find past recordings and publish a new album. perhaps it is too painful for her. while i'm sure she will always consider herself a singer, she has probably had to acknowledge that she won't be recording anymore, not like before. gosh, a serious tragedy, but she is mega talented and forever beloved. and that picture of her is perfection.

Just after I posted that before, I started thinking. Julie actually recorded both the music of Richard Rogers and lyrics of alan jay lerner at the same time but there was about 2 years between releases (so 1994 and 1996 I think from memory). Part of me is wondering whether, since they got as far as an album cover, whether Julie ended up recording the Gershwin album as well but since her throat surgery settlement had pretty secret terms, and it was all around the same time (surgery in 1997) whether maybe she wasn't allowed to release the album since it would look like - wow, you've lost your voice but you're releasing a new album? (even though it would have been recorded a while before the surgery). If that's the case, I'm hoping those recordings will eventually turn up... I can only dream!!
Oh, and I'm listening to the Music of Richard Rogers at the moment. Just totally awesome!!!

OK, so I think now that although the rumours about the Gershwin album were true, the other album cover might have been a mock-up as I found these others as possibilities of other future projects if Julie hadn't lost her voice. Oh how I would love all of these albums. I can still only dream away....

i think it could easily have been explained that something was recorded before surgery. it could be a simple explanation or a more complicated one. she did record a lot in her lifetime. we can be thankful and happy about that, for sure.

I'm ashamed to admit....I don't own any cd's of Julie, yet. Any recommendations? You have to be kidding me right? Every and all... sorry that's not helpful... early Julie (so 1960's Julie) maybe Broadway's Fair Julie. later Julie (so 1990's Julie) Classic Broadway complication. It has a mixture of songs from both the Broadway albums (1994 and 1996) that I mentioned before as well as stuff from the King and I remake (from 1992) and Victor/Victoria on Broadway (from 1995). movie albums that are a must after TSOM are Star! and Victor/Victoria and Thoroughly Modern Millie. broadway albums my fair lady (I think the broadway version is better than the London version), the boyfriend and Camelot. Gosh, I'm really just starting to list all of them because they are all fantastic!

B'way recording of My Fair Lady is unparalleled. I actually have trouble listening to Victor/Victoria. I feel like that was the material that ended up destroying her voice, and it makes me so uncomfortable.

Not sure which one I would like to buy first. Maybe 'Love Julie'. Not sure. Milly and Star! are on my wishlist already.

They pitched it a bit too low and she doesn't seem comfortable with it but movie Victor/Victoria is better since that was almost 15 years earlier (1982 vs 1995). Julie said herself that she prefers London My Fair Lady but I think Broadway My Fair Lady is far superior - her voice is so much lighter and crisper (if that's a way to describe voices)

If I had a choice, I wouldn't go Love Julie (although I do love it) over Classical Broadway. The music is far too synthesised and well you can't really go past all those wonderful Broadway tracks. Actually Love Julie was a little side project that Julie did as a birthday present for Blake and he liked it so much that he suggested they release it commercially. I think there is something funny with the copyright as that is the album that is most re-released under different names.

I think I have a few extra copies of my fair lady on Broadway if anyone is interested (it is from the days that I would buy another copy if there was a different album cover). I'll check. I think I have 2 copies of love Julie. I can always mail presents to friends if I can find them!

OK, I've done a quick check of my cd's I need to have a better check as I couldn't find some.
I can't seem to find my second copy of My Fair Lady on Broadway (I think my dad has stolen it from me), but I found some others that I double ups of that are up for grabs if anyone is interested.
The Essential Julie Andrews - it is a re-issue of Love Julie (so mid 1980's) A Christmas Treasure - Well Christmas album done in the 1960's I think These Precious Things - a reissue of 2 JA albums, The Lass With a Delicate Air (late 1950's early 1960's - around My Fair Lady Time) and Julie Andrews Sings (around the same time) The Souvenir Album - A compilation of tracks from many JA ventures (got 3 My Fair Lady tracks from the Broadway version, others from Don't go in the Lions Cage tonight album and tracks from Broadways Fair Julie)
Give me a shout if you want any or all of them!!

That could simply be a sentimental preference, as well. Certainly, the production values on the B'way recording are better.

She's totally magical! And you found a colorized version!
I love the way she drops him. I always wonder if, and hope he didn't, hurt himself!

I'm only talking about the film version here, but I really didn't warm to anything in V/V other than Crazy World

One of the rarest Julie albums I own is "love me tender" (1983). I got a copy from a girl in England about 15 years ago and it is absolutely brilliant and it is the extended version with 14 tracks. The reason it is so rare is that it has never been released on CD or on iTunes. I love it!!
