This is a wonderful blog post with lots of to-die quotes about the meaning of M's costumes. I had quite a lot of lovely quotes cut and pasted, but Proboards ate my thread and I'm too frustrated to recreate it. Well worth reading, and if you read the comments, you'll fnd out which costume Dorothy Jeakins loved best. Film Fashion and Character Development in TSOM

That was wonderful. Thanks for sharing. I really loved how the development of Maria's character was told through the costumes. So clever. Some of the thing I'd though about before, but not others. Really great!
i really love this quote about the Laendler "They meet on the patio - where indoors and out of doors, refined and raw, intertwine. And they dance, and dance, and dance."

YES! that was the first quote I pasted into my post, and then there were others and then...there were none. That was the best. And I agree, I'd thought of some of the things but not all of them.

I think the thing I loved about that quote from the Laendler was the concept of the location of the dance - on the patio where inside meets outside then the concept of the Captain and Maria as being the meeting of the refined and the raw... Just totally love it!
Whenever I think there maybe not much more that I love or can think of to talk about the Laendler, something like this comes up and it is WOW! All over again.

my thoughts to this awesome blog discovery:
- that the dress the poor didn't want was reminiscent of a school girl's uniform. i think i always picked up on that subconsciously, but it really does give insight to her personality, more than just that she's poor and doesn't care about fashion. the whole child-like thing, also hinted at by the hat. - that elsa's wardrobe keeps her from connecting with the children like maria has. - the outdoors/indoors thing... more than just raw v. refined, but she is an outsider and he is an insider. but it is interesting that he comes outside to be with her, leaving his crowd to be with hers. where the heart is, etc... - shift in wardrobe once she realizes she loves the captain - the wedding dress as a "butterfly moment" and how the plain wardrobe in the first half of the movie contributes to the awesomeness of seeing her in that dress.
anyway, such an interesting read. and i think another blog could be written about the hair styles. but maybe we've covered all there is to say about that.
good fine.

Great insight. I especially like your comment about him coming outside to be with her, leaving the social scene inside. Thanks for that link, there is some great stuff there.

They meet on the patio...That could totally work as the basis for a Laendler fic (because there can never be too many of them, right)

That was my favorite quote about it too!!! I also love that she calls Maria "nature woman!"

This is lovely and gives some mire depth to a few scenes. I also liked the part where she's in her nightgown. The white portraying her innocence, maybe even her naive way of life and with the children.

Not quite a blog on costumes but i found this site that has sewing patterns in case anyone wants to reproduce their own gazebo dress (no idea whether anyone has posted this before). Dress Patterns
There's also a blog about some of the original dresses used in the film that have been up for auction at times. Blog
