I never thought about it before, but in the very beginning, when Sr. Margaretta tells Maria she can go into RM's office---do you think RM was conferring with Sr. M about whether to send Maria to the von Trapp villa? Or do you think it was a decision she made alone/with prayer, and simply told Sr. M? Or Maybe Sr. M didn't know until after Maria was informed?

That's really interesting to wonder. Hmmm... I don't know. Maybe? It seems that RM usually has some sort of consultation with some of the other sisters at different times (like before 'how do you solve a problem' and after Maria return to the Abbey so quite possibly.
I know I was wondering something else about RM yesterday when I watched the movie. We've all debated back and forth about how long Maria was gone when she returned to the Abbey. It seems like she had been there several days from the exchange between RM and SM after the children has tried to visit. I found it a bit strange that RM didn't see Maria before that point. Maybe she was just leaving Maria in SM hands? But then when RM finally sees Maria, she was almost apologetic that she had left her alone. Then when Maria said she came back because she was frightened, RM jumped into action almost immediately asking whether they were unkind to Maria. You'd think that if she had been so concerned before that she would have seen Maria earlier? I don't know. It's too early in the morning to think straight!

I think she waited because Maria asked to go into seclusion. I don't recall the exact exchange between RM and Sr. M about that.

i always assumed that she just went in to see if the RM was ready for Maria, but as the mistress of postulants, i am sure she was consulted. i think that scenario works fine. as for not seeing when she returned, maria requested seclusion and i guess that was something she was granted until she was ready to come out of it on her own. i get the impression that RM actually broke protocol by requesting to see her. well, maybe not break it... she was the RM, after all.
anyhoo.

you're both probably right. It was just a thought/question I was having.
Now just while we are on the topics of nuns, I just want to put it out there. I think Sister Bertha is awesome. Just saying.
Ok... back to the other discussion

Yes. She's hard on Maria, but she knows she doesn't belong there. And I love how badass she is when the Nazis show up. Nobody pushes Sr. B around, that's for sure.

I remember not liking her as a kid. I always thought it was kind of creepy how she said "a clown" in "how to solve a problem", but I think now Sr B totally has some spunk!! Love her!! I had so much fun putting her in Midnight Encounters. I have a plan for her in another story one day....

the look she gives zeller when he tells her to open the door faster, it's the best. and any nun that can make someone else kiss the floor... do not mess with her.
props to berthe.

OK, in my fantasy world of fan fiction, Sister Berthe makes a wicked chocolate cake. It is completely sought after by all the other Sisters. Many floor kissing episodes for anyone who dares to take a second piece. Just sayin'
(Ok, I'm going to bed now. I promise not to be so silly when I wake up)

Well now I'm just grumpy. After going to bed at some ridiculously late hour, the baby wakes up to be fed about 2 hours later (first night in about a month that he hasn't slept through the night - typical) and now my other daughter has gastro (I got it earlier in the week). Yeah, now just really grumpy. I'd like to go back to silly. Coffee time I think!

Just to add insult to injury, I just made the most spectacular cappuccino just to then discover the milk had slightly gone off so down the sink it went.
I want some of Sister Bertha's chocolate cake. I hear it's awesome!

i watched this scene a couple days ago and there is something in the way sr. margaretta says, "you can go in now" and smiles at maria makes me think she was in there discussing our girl. it was a bit of a reassuring and knowing smile, like "it isn't as bad a you think" with a touch of "see ya, wouldn't wanna be ya." ok, maybe not so much that...

Can I change the subject a bit and express myself about "seclusion?" People always talk about it like it's some formal status or act, like "he joined the army," and who knows, maybe it is. But it can also simply mean, "she's not talking to anyone right now, she doesn't want to be disturbed." Just to be sure I wasn't ignorant of some official thing Catholics or nuns do, I went to that expert on all matters, Wikipedia. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seclusion Amusingly, their first example of seclusion is about religious customs regarding separating men and women including the custom of giving Jewish brides and grooms their first few moments of privacy right after the ceremony -- a custom we observed even though, uh, we had been alone plenty before the wedding. So Maria and I have something in common! We were in seclusion (well, not together).! In fact, Maria's seclusion is the third example of seclusion in the article. I've never felt so close to our girl before! I know, I sound so batty I need to be put in seclusion. I'm in the wrong time zone is all.

No idea about the seclusion bit... I'll have to think about it although I feel like I need to be in "seclusion" away from my children at the moment!!
(Btw augiesannie are you travelling at the moment?)

I found a link for Everything You Need to Know About Becoming a Nun (But Were Afraid to Ask). This is a Benedictine site, and I think I remember that is the order at Nonnberg. link

Interesting article utility. I think the thing that would kill me would being up by 5am (and I thought being a mum was bad!) (I loved some of the FAQ like "Do you enjoy life?" lol!)

I take it this was not career research? See a post elsewhere I'm about to make about my business trip adventures and the TSOM connection.

No, not career research! Lol! (I happen to love my husband too much to take on certain vows that a nun makes!)

Just on that note, I have a close friend who LOVES TSOM but there is no way I'm telling her about this forum. I don't want her to know what goes on in my head. It is bad enough my husband now knows (and yes, he has read almost everything I've written now, and he has enjoyed it so that's ok - and reaping the benefits of my dirty mind!)

Haha, I would be lying on the floor the whole day! My friend said the other day, you really have a wicked mind. Moi?!? No!?
Okay taking about abbeys. ... Were we live we look on a Monastery. I've been there once with school. So that's ages ago. But I do know that men can go in seclusion there. I looked at their site and it says; You can meditate about all daily life, leave the hectic behind you. That way your mind and body has time to heal and can reflect on what you want to do in the future.

I know! The chocolate cake will come back in ch5 of ALAWT which I'll start writing next. Got it all planned out (actually now thinking if it, I might be splitting the chapter up so it might be in ch6 but anyway, it's coming!)
