I don't know how many people have seen Star! (1968). It is a truly awesome Julie movie although it bombed at the box office at the time.
I found a documentary on it over the weekend if anyone is interested.

Oh it is THE best!!! It is such a shame that it didn't do better at the box office. It truly shows off Julie's remarkable talent.

I love youtube. I just seem to find new little gems on it.
Here is another Star! documentary. I'd thought I'd post it in case there was interest and also so I know where to find it again!!

These are fascinating! And they lend a wonderful insight into Julie's prodigious talent. Yes,YouTube is great- there are lots of great clips on there of Julie singing as a child.
It must have been devastating for the Wise/Chaplin/Andrews team to have seen Star! bomb after all the effort they put into it, especially after they seemed to have got it so right in TSOM.
As ever, thanks for posting!

Finally got to watch this afternoon.
Julie was, as all have said, simply phenomenal. I think my favorite scene was when she'd had a bit too much to drink. I won't say anymore because I don't want to spoil anything but the woman does inebriated so well!
I thought the gentleman playing Noel Coward did an amazing job and practically stole every scene he was in. Plus, according to imdb.com Noel Coward is the actor's godfather. :-)
The movie itself dragged in parts, IMHO, and I must admit I fast forwarded through some of the dance numbers. I did the same with "Victor/Victoria" as some of the numbers just slowed things down.
Knowing what I do about Julie's early life and career, I found myself several times noticing the parallels between Julie and Gertrude's lives. Early on in the film I thought how easily Gertie's path could have been Julie's. And, perhaps, in many ways was.

I have just watched it too! I didn't know he was Daniel Massey's godfather. I did think he seemed extremely comfortable in the role, though. Look, I'm just a sucker for musicals so I was delighted to have so many musical numbers, but I can see what you mean... And about the parallels, didn't Julie herself say in some interview that the characters she most related to were Maria and Gertrude? By the way, I loved the inebriated scene too.

"Don't argue.... I can't stand people who argue!!" I love this quote from Star!! (and I'm pretty sure it is from the inebriated scene). I am planning of repurposing this quote (or something very close to) in the last chapter of my car story!!!
I think there is only 2 scenes where Julie does not appear in the movie. All the musical numbers are just spectacular. My personal fave is the end number "The Saga of Jenny".

My brother happened upon me watching the movie and sat down with me right at "The Saga of Jenny" scene. When it ended he shook his head and said, "Wow. That was amazing!"

I remember there was an ad for Star! on my TSOM video tape, which showed the tiniest snippet of 'The Saga of Jenny' (the bit where she talks about Jenny lighting the Christmas tree) and so when I first watched it (on Boxing Day actually) I was sitting there waiting for 'the Christmas song'.
It's so sad that Star! was such a flop because as we've said, it really shows how amazing Julie is. And I agree that after reading 'Home' Julie and Gertrude seemed very similar. Maybe that's part of the reason they chose her for the role.

I'll do my best. Now that I'm at TAFE, I have holidays to work around as well, but that's only two days a week and I'll probably get time off anyway.
