1. no idea... incredibly ridiculous so many years later. 2. "here, darling. i noticed you misplaced your silly whistle so i got you a new one. engraved. all my love and spittle, georg." 3. yes. nonnberg is a very progressive abbey.

For picture #3, I am actually surprised that Peggy Wood was there with them that day. I don't remember the Rev. Mother being in any scenes at the Rock Riding School (where the concert was), right? I mean, the following scenes where they're in the abbey and/or at the graveyard were shot at different locations.

I do find JA and CP wonderfully relaxed in each other's company in this photo...

Yes, I think they were and still are very fond of each other. But still, knowing CP as we do :-), it's hard to fathom what he must have been thinking during this shoot. Unless he was drunk.
Another funny thing about the Christmas pictures is her costumes. She's wearing the Festival costume in one, and her Laendler dress in another.

they are all wearing their laendler costumes in that one. what an incredibly strange concept for publicity.

except him. It's so much fun to make up absurd scenarios that fit these pictures. "After the Laendler, Georg changes into something more casual, and they exchange gifts."

or "refusing to don the santa costume designed specifically for him, CP settles on a snazzy little black number and joins the family for yuletide fun."

But lemacd, can you come up with a reason for him being so tan in the second picture?

he's not tan, he's turning purple. tie is too tight. i suspect some lucky girl had to give him mouth to mouth.

I suspect Charmian Carr dreamed about a moment like that, haha

Also, the way he is seated in the first one is very un-CP and un-Georg. You guys have me laughing so much, I have to go find more of these to inspire more merriment.

I suspect Charmian Carr dreamed about a moment like that, haha She definitely had a crush on him. Apparently it's mentioned in her book Forever Liesl

Chris has quite the stronghold on Julie in that third photo. And tight pants. Quite tight. Must've been all the schnapps and strudel.

I think it's funny how CP and Robert Wise have both claimed a piece of her.

He's probably trying to save her from Chris' clutches. She doesn't look like she wants to be saved.

I was looking for a discussion on Christmas promo pictures and stumbled upon this gem of a thread.
I was wondering if anyone had any theories on why CP is so much tanner than everyone else (other than the above suggestion of his tie being too tight. lol) Did he just get back from a vacation to the beach? I would think they would have tried to tone it down a little with makeup. It's almost comical how different his skin tone is than everyone else's.
And why the outfit change for Maria in the different pictures? Seems odd.

Summer. Tan. Time off. That's all I've got.
Promo shots were for (obviously) Christmas ads----at the time TSOM was first in theaters, big pictures were on what was called 'road show' release. Big cities with premieres, then moving slowly across the country (world) for months afterward, even years. The idea of a movie opening on hundreds or thousands of screens all at once was unknown. Initial premiere was in April, so these were for that following Christmas.
The outfit change for Maria allowed for some non-Christmas photos at the same shoot.

I find it amusing that Julie is wearing her 'drab' clothes in the photo on the left, even though she is (presumably) married to Georg and also, it is Christmas ...I suppose they wanted to 'keep her in character', but wouldn't she be wearing something a little smarter as chatelaine of the villa and married to Georg?!

It's actually her 'travel' clothing that she wears to the festival just before they escape. I agree, it is an odd choice.

The original post about RM and Max being on a date has me laughing. That's certainly a pairing I hadn't thought of!
It is mentioned earlier in this thread, but why is RM even there? She isn't in this scene. Did she drive the get-away car to the abbey? haha.

I am laughing so hard right now. I guess the point of publicity photos is to reach people who haven’t seen the movie yet so maybe they didn’t really give a lot of thought to the absurdity of Maria wearing her travel outfit for Christmas. And she didn’t have that many snappy looking costumes (although the Laendler dress works pretty well in the other photo. The post honeymoon suit is a little too dressy). As for the orange face, I always thought that was some kind of film processing error. It doesn’t even look natural enough to be a tan.
