I'm trying to think when this photo was taken; this looks like the Blue Dress (although I don't remember the pattern in it), beside the Pegasus Landing, but in daylight. Any suggestions?

Yes, it is the blue dress. The pattern doesn't show up well in the "moonlight" but it is there.
I would imagine this was just done for publicity purposes.
Beautiful and evocative, though.

Do I recall reading/hearing that at least one scene if not several had to be shot with some kind of filter over the camera lens to make it appear as it if was nighttime, when it was really daytime? If I'm remembering that right, could it have been the scene by the lake? That would explain this shot in daylight.

I think you might be right, paula. Not sure where I heard that, but I know I have. And you can almost tell, if you think about it while watching that scene. Gorgeous photo, regardless.

Zyrgle, you are unwittingly quoting Maria- (I think I have), I know I have... good gazebo stuff- you're a club member!

I was going to say what paula said about filming during the day with a filter to make it seem like night. I love that photo too

Do you think it was photographed the same time as this one? This picture of Liesl doesn't appear in the film, and the lights are on over the lake.

Maybe they were thinking of filming Liesl returning from the gazebo in the thunderstorm (just before she climbs up into Maria's room)?
This would explain why the marble underfoot is wet and the lights are on (assuming this was going to be a day-for-night shot).

The photo of Liesl looks an awful lot like this, when she was running out to meet Rolfe - see the marble is wet here too? I'm thinking it's probably just wet because it insisted on raining all the time while they were on location. Maybe they took this photo in between takes and Charmian was just returning to the terrace to go again? I just think she would look more bedraggled if this were after Sixteen Going On Seventeen. It makes sense to me that they would film this scene and the one of Maria at the lake on the same day. Two very short on-location shots, in the same location. And whatever equipment you'd need to make it look like nighttime.

Just found this gif - and I am wondering who or what is making those waves in the lake to the right of the Pegasus landing?
An over-hopeful Rolf, skinny-dipping in the water, planning to waylay Liesl before she gets to the gazebo?! This it must be, for if you watch Liesl carefully, she disappears between the Pegasus head and the second tree on the right...

Personally, I think it is the Captain in there, trying to cool his ardour once he realises he has just fallen head over heels in love with Maria And The Pinecone.

Yes, but I've just had to edit my comment under the gif as I've just seen that Liesl disappears down between the Pegasus head and the tree, and I can't imagine she would do that if she saw her father in the buff!
But talking of ripples, here we see them on the right hand side of the Pegasus landing. When it is Maria's turn to wander down to the lakeside, they can be seen on the left hand side - personally I would have preferred a perfectly still lake, but Robt Wise must have thought otherwise. Interesting job for someone to be a lake-rippler for the afternoon!

Wondering if perhaps it wasn't some lighting equipment or some such on a raft/boat on the lake causing the ripples?

Something like a (silent) generator? Good thinking...

BTW day-for-night filming is quite common - in one of my (many) TSOM books, they show the filming schedules and when they are shooting day-for-night.
