So I was out with some friends yesterday evening and we wandered into this cute little café/used bookstore. I was aimlessly looking at the shelves, and completely by accident stumbled upon the novelization of the screenplay of Millie, which I of course bought because I can't resist anything that has Julie's face on it. Anyway, that made me realize I don't think I've seen a thread about the movie here, so thoughts? I enjoy it quite a bit, in spite of the occasional, eh, socially questionable moments.... And of course Julie is absolutely adorable in it! I also really like the stage version, which came 33 years after the film, has moderately different plot/characterization, and has almost a completely different score. So we can discuss that too. By the way, the entire original Broadway performance with Sutton Foster is on youtube, if you'd like to watch it.

I absolutely love the film of TMM, and always have done, since I first saw it when it came out (I am showing my age now!) I remember being dotty about Julie in TSOM in 1965, and was delighted that she made such a lovely film to follow in TMM. It's such fun, and well-suited to Julie's talents, that I bought it for my kids, who still enjoy watching it!
And the fashions are to die for...

I just love this film! One of my faves! I think as a kid the only three Julie movies I had ever seen were obviously TSOM, Mary Poppins and TMM. As a kid, I don't think I understood the bit the movie about the white slave trade, I just loved singing and dancing to the Tapioca and Muzzy with her Jazz Baby! and quoting Mrs Meers "Sad to be all alone in the world." But Julie, Oh Julie!!! She is just so wonderful in it (as always)! She really shows off a lot of her skills, not only in the singing and acting but her dancing too! Oh I could rave on like a looney for days... (but I won't). Oh sagaofjenny, I love that .gif as well! Classic!

Thinking about it, those 'looks' she gives the camera in TMM are one step further on from the 'looks' she gives (not to the camera) in TSOM - in My Fav Things, after the puppet show, etc - very Julie!

If we're going to talk about Julie's faces in this movie, then I think I'm obligated to share this one: Sigh. What a zany movie. In addition to my adoration of all things Julie, I also have a thing for the 20s, so naturally I love it to pieces. I remember reading somewhere that the producer had wanted to do a film of The Boy Friend but couldn't get the rights. Or something. So he had TMM written instead. I cannot for the life of me remember where I read it, though....

Oh wow! That .gif!!!! Love those Sexy Eyes!!! I can now imagine Maria giving Georg Sexy Eyes like that!!! (Oh WOW!!!)
I think I remember that thing about TBF and TMM as well. They ended up doing a movie of TBF with Twiggy (?) and it was a bit of a flop. I would have loved seeing Julie as Polly Brown but alas, I just have the CD.

I'm always really bummed that I'll never see Julie in any of her early shows. I listen to the recordings all the time on Spotify though (I'm too much of a poor college kid to actually get my own copies). Anyway, from what I understand the TBF film was kind of meta. It was about a company actually putting on the musical, like a story within a story. Not sure what I would think of it.
There are a few similarities between TBF and TMM though, like the whole lying about status and rich kid leaving home to live in the "real world." I guess that was the intention.

The bit in TMM that still makes me laugh is when she can't decide whether to wear her long string of pearls 'inside' or 'outside' her boobs!!

What a problem to have! I have the perfect figure for a young lady in the 20s. My beads would always hang straight!

Oh yeah then she realises she has to go and buy a bra so her beads will hang straight, but then the bra strap breaks as she buys the newspaper and the newspaper guy is shocked as her beads suddenly fly up off her chest! LOVE IT!!!

I just saw this movie a week ago or so. It's probably the only Julie movie I've seen apart from TSOM and Mary Poppins. She was fantastic in the movie though I think the plot itself is kind of kooky and silly. In fact, it was creepy at times with those Chinese men and the land lady drugging and kidnapping the young innocent female tenants. After seeing this movie, I only started to realize now how great of an actress Julie is (shame on me!). I've always known Julie in TSOM, so to see her as a completely different character other than a sweet governess (and to portray it well) was wonderful. Of course, I loved everything she sang, especially the song that she sang at the Jewish wedding! I think it was in Yiddish. That comes to show that she can sing any kind of music in any language! The bit in TMM that still makes me laugh is when she can't decide whether to wear her long string of pearls 'inside' or 'outside' her boobs!! Oh yeah then she realises she has to go and buy a bra so her beads will hang straight, but then the bra strap breaks as she buys the newspaper and the newspaper guy is shocked as her beads suddenly fly up off her chest! LOVE IT!!! So THAT'S what happened! I had no idea what the heck went on there. About the gif sagaofjenny, it was refreshing to see Julie with long (blonde) hair! And in curls! I wish we saw it for longer and without the hat.

bluesatinsashes, for more totally awesome Julie movies to check out, my recommendations are Victor/Victoria and Star! And yes, Julie is a wonderful actress (as spoken from someone who is obsessed by her - LOL)

I love Thoroughly Mordern Millie! My little girls and I always dance in elevators and sing that ridiculous Tapioca song because of this movie! And I love how everyone in all the musical numbers are color coordinated. Whoever did the costume design was just a rockstar!
And I know we are supposed to root for sweet and cute Jimmy as her love interest but that gentlemen who plays Mr. Graydon is like a super hot Ken doll!
But the whole kidnapping creepy landlady plot does turn a bit wierd...
And @charleybec is right on the money, you must see Victor/Victoria as well. Julie is just stellar--and looks way better in a suit than some men I know do!

I'm so glad you enjoyed it! I think that film works really well as a pick-me-up (second to TSOM of course) just because it's so wacky and cute. I always say that you can't go into it expecting to take it seriously because there are a few plot elements that really have not aged well, but it's just a lot of fun. Definitely agree with @charleybec if you're looking for different examples of Julie's acting range, especially Star!, or even The Americanization of Emily if you're looking for a non-musical role. Okay honestly I'm totally biased and would say all of Julie's roles are great. But that's me....

I love Thoroughly Modern Millie too! The whole thing was so funny and cute and fun. I LOVE the costumes, especially all of Millie's. They are kind of wacky and bold with the weird patterns and whatnot but they still fit the era and I think that's so cool. Of course watching Julie (and basically everyone else) tap dance was cool too.
What's up with the Jewish wedding scene though the dance got a little bit wacky towards the end when everyone was circling and stuff. The first time I watched it I was a little creeped out. Creeped out by Mrs Meers and her henchmen too haha what bothers me about the three of them is that they're supposed to be Chinese and they don't even speak proper Mandarin haha (as someone who learns Mandarin). Unless they were speaking in some sort of dialect. Oh well.
Also my friend and I were saying the other day that Millie must be partially blind (blinded by love maybe) because she said that Mr. Graydon had "the cutest little baby face" when his face is like a hunk of wood (handsomely chiseled wood of course)

Anyone seen 'Mr Graydon' in anything else? He had the looks to take a star part (no rival to Mr Plummer, you understand...)

Thanks for the recommendations, @charleybec! There was a Julie movie marathon on TCM a few months ago consisting of Darling Lili, Thoroughly Modern Millie, Star!, and Victor/Victoria, but I didn't have enough space on my PVR to record them all! I saw a bit of Darling Lili and Star!. I forgot to mention this, but in Thoroughly Modern Millie, there were some nuances in Julie's acting that reminded me of Maria in TSOM. There was one scene in TMM where Millie was in a car and she said something like, "What's her name" and it immediately reminded me of when Maria says, "God bless what's his name". And I think there were some instances in TMM where Millie did some hand clasping (I think) just like when Maria clasped her hands when the Captain allowed her to stay. skittlesmaltesers I know what Mandarin and Cantonese sound like and Mrs. Meers and the 2 Chinese guys were not speaking either. She kept saying the same phrase to them regardless of the situation. It was just Asian-sounding gibberish On another note, I recently visited Julie's IMDB page and the last project she did as an actress was back in 2010 in Despicable Me. I was a bit surprised. Then that same day, I read on the web that Princess Diaries 3 was confirmed. A day later, a source close to Disney denied these rumours. I'd love to see her in another movie someday! indigoblue this might answer your question: www.imdb.com/name/nm0001260/?ref_=tt_cl_t5

Obviously a multiply-talented guy, judging by his later diplomatic career.
I don't think I would have been able to concentrate if I had had to negotiate with him !!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE TMM! Love the fashions, songs, story, Julie, everything! And her facial expressions in this are awesome. And dancing in the elevator - so cool - was finally able to do that in on my TSOM tour the other week - right before we left Innsbruck for Salzburg. I just clung to the back of the elevator and tapped my feet. My mother thought I was crazy.

i'm going to be hated for this, but... i watched TMM not long ago for the first time and while i thought julie was brilliant and she made me laugh so much, the movie itself dissolved into silliness by the end. loved her trying to hook her boss and all that, julie was really great in that role. i just thought the movie was so-so.

Not at all! Julie's brilliance aside, it does descend into silliness! I think half the reason I like it so well is really more nostalgia than the actual film. I used to watch it with my Mom when I was young and we would dance in elevators--and now I dance in them with my girls.

Agreed. It's so silly. When something needs captions to tell the characters thoughts, it's silly. But we love it. Yay for dancing in elevators

Nup, disagree. Awesome film. Maybe it's the mega obsessed Julie fan within me but I just love TMM! I think it was the first JA film I saw apart from TSOM and MP when I was a kid and I remember ONLY wanting to watch it because of Julie (I was about 4 or 5 at the time) then falling madly in love with the music, dancing, singing and the just total silliness of it from the word go - the popping beads, the elevator dancing, the tapioca, jimmy and the red roadster, muzzy, oh dear darling muzzy! (RASPBERRY!!!!), mrs meers and soy sauce, the fireworks and the acrobatics at the end. I love every aspect of the film!
Yeah, call me crazy but Julie can do no wrong in my book!
