Here are some of the stories I'd write if I had unlimited time: 1. I have a "how they told the children" story sketched out 2. The Walled Garden - Maria finds herself drawn to a ruined English garden he built for Agathe, they have several confrontations there - I have a lot of ideas for this 3. Steamy (but not explicit) wedding night on the train 4. And I'd love to help with the music story
How about you?

when and if i finish 'lost in you' (kidding... totally plan to finish it):
1. the real reason Franz turned in the Von Trapp family (i have notes already started on this but it is definitely back burner sittin' presently) 2. i'd like to write an elsa POV piece... 3. today i was thinking about my present project and how in the RH book, the story is told by Charles' (Georg character)male secretary, so i thought the SOM story told by Max as the narrator might be an interesting story.
love the 'walled garden' story idea.
thought of another, giving the ol' edit button a try... 4. lately i have also been entertaining the idea of making 'no safe place' un-"complete" and give it a happier ending. but not sure how. i like how i wrote maria's character in that one and in my mind she would end it the way it did. but still...

Oh! I thought of another one! Something where they are not yet together, but they are stranded somewhere, perhaps with some of the children in tow and she is injured. A little brandy to ease the pain, and lots of K-rated examination and bandaging going on. You get the picture.
You know, I'd forgotten about NSP -- it was the first time I remember you -- I LOVED Maria's character in that one, and remember telling you not to apologize for the way it ended. But life is full of second chances, right? (that's what they tell me).

someone just 'favorited' and 'followed' NSP. i'm flattered, but i'm quite sure i noted it as complete and my a/n certainly made that clear. but maybe that is a sign that i should give it another consideration.
brandy to ease the pain... hmmmmm. yes, i like.

of course, she would only indulge in the brandy after some maidenly demurring. At times, I thought that perhaps he should be the injured one, but the chance to make her silly and loose is too too tempting. Which thing on the list should I write next? YOU had better not get distracted from RH. LIY. (why do I keep calling it Random Harvest? thank heaven for the edit button!) I think I've got chapter 4 as good as it's going to get. It's never going to be great. 5-7 are in great shape. So my attention is starting to wander to the next, er, victim.

definitely the walled garden idea. i would devour a story like that. currently i'm eating/sleeping/breathing LIY so no worries.

Over on FB< two members just came up with the idea of M&G interacting around the embarassingly detailed pictures on the ballroom wall. I'm not doing the idea justice here, but maybe you can!

so before my ipod decided to commit suicide out of my pocket and drown itself at the bottom of a six inch puddle last week, i was listening to Adele's '21' album a lot. and i got this idea for a songfic for 'someone like you' w/ Elsa POV. the idea is burning in my head. i know nothing of songfic, though. anyone have favorites over at FF they like so i can see what it entails?
not going to happen until after LIY is finished, but it is haunting me. especially the part about my ipod.

Love the ideas you guys have come up with. Personally, a lot of my ideas end up rated M and aren't always plausible with the way their characters would actually react. I love ideas where Maria and Georg are somehow forced to spend time with each other pre-engagement though, with or without the children (but, let's face it, usually without). Lemacd: from what I've seen, there aren't a lot of songfics that are really great, at least in the TSOM universe. Usually people will show a few lines of the song, then go to the story, back to the song, story, etc. There are a few ways to do it though. You can have Elsa singing the song, listening to a song, or just use it in between the story segments. Food for thought, I don't know if you already know that in the original TSOM play Max and Elsa were both singing parts. They sang "How Can Love Survive" which is actually played in the background in the party scene in the movie. How Can Love Survive

We're on the same page ForeverJulie... like ideas of them being forced together pre-engagement... came to think of several stories I've read in the Dr. Quinn universe (another one of my obsessions ) where they (Sully and Dr. Mike) are forced to stay out in stormy weather and seek shelter in a cave or something, always some funny situations coming up... and with Maria and Georg it would be even more fun, they have not yet fully admitted to either them self or anyone else that they love each other....

i knew the max and elsa sing in the stage version. my first real intro to TSOM was my mother's original broadway recording of it with Mary Martin. wore that sucker out. my idea is not for her to sing it, though. hard to explain. i have too many ideas.

Agree that situations where they are forced together, esp if one can ditch some of the children, are delicious. I have one like that on my idea list, although I think it might be hard to be really original, but I'm not afraid of borrowing ideas from others. Mquest, I loved the gypsy story, hope you will come back to it soon. The idea I was playing with, which at the rate I'm going won't go anywhere till 2014, also involved the required imbibing of brandy. (oops, repeating myself).
Even for songs I love, I don't really deeply love songfics (although really, I love any fanfic). Seems kind of herky-jerky. If I were a better writer, I'd do something like . . . have the story reflect the song, and maybe use bits of lyrics, but not really use the song explicitly. Like a restatement.

i like that idea, augiesannie... not so in your face with the song. i have way too many ideas in my brain. way too many. came up with another one shot idea today. i'm sure it's a good thing, but... right now the ideas i need are not that kind. you know? man, i'm whiny.

M & G are married for a while... the daily grind of being wife and mother has maria down (yeah, where did i get this idea, huh? don't answer that...). basically she's kinda down because things aren't going the way she thought they would, but in the end it is ok. because, you know... she's got a great husband and the kids are pretty super awesome too.
i watched a movie the other night called 'letter from an unknown woman'... total downer, don't recommend it. but it got me hooked because it was set in vienna. anyway, there is this scene that i liked and i kinda would rip it off if i ever write this.
or the 'it's a wonderful life' mash up.
or the elsa story.
or my franz story.
or get 'lost in you' finished. kidding, i totally will get that finished.
my LHOP readers will just have to think i died or something.

Or maybe they will decide that if lemacd loves TSOM, they should learn to love it too! Um, don't you think most people would love the story you propose precisely because, like, we all get it? Been there.

ps @forever Julie - I did say, above, that I love the "georg and maria get stuck" theme. But i forgot to say that I don't think the M nature of the ideas should stand in the way of your sharing them, I'd love to hear your ideas!. There are lots of M stories, some are icky, but some like Accidental Governess are wonderful. And anyway, even if you're not going to write them, your fans here would love to hear the ideas. M or not M (we can password protect even your ideas if you like).
BTW - did folks notice a new M story on fanfic? It doesn't show up on the front page but all this discussion of ratings led me to it. Now I can go read it! When I should be working!

sorry, i'll grow up. i've let people know that is what i'm up to. i could just ask them to come read it point blank. i'm kinda shameless too. but whatever.
yes, i think people can relate. but maybe people want escapism. balance, right? anyway...

I would love to hear your ideas... don't mind the M rating, as long as it is written with style... got to agree with augiesannie that some M fics are rather "icky" (love that word... *LOL* ) So please share your ideas...

That new M rated fic (Somewhere Only We Know). I miiiight be best friends with the person who wrote it I've been telling her to come hang out here but she's pretty deep into writing another TSOM story and she doesn't want to get sidetracked (or be influenced by/reveal ideas) because she already has pretty much the whole story planned out. I might get her to come anyways, but more likely after she's done writing her story. Oh and, M rated ideas? I really meant smut, haha. Mostly they involve getting stuck in the snow or something, maybe after just Maria and Georg are out shopping for birthday presents/christmas presents, etc. They find someplace to hunker down and have to cuddle for warmth (have we all seen One Special Night here?). And maybe someone got their clothes wet in the snow and has to take some of them off. Most of my ideas totally ignore the time frame of the movie, because let's face it, it's tough to get your characters to do everything they want while keeping in line with the story. Omg, one of my favorite daydreams though. Maria doesn't come back from the abbey, the Captain decides it's a bad idea to marry Elsa (I firmly believe that even if Maria hadn't come back he would've come to his senses eventually about this). Aunschluss occurs and Captain moves the family to America. Maria figures out she'd make a shitty nun (or the Rev. Mother finally had the balls to tell her) and decides she needs a change of pace and needs to stay safe from the abbey. Maria finds a job as an elementary school teacher (and teaches chorus maybe also? maybe tutors in German?) and starts a relatively happy life. Captain and children have been in the states for a bit and he gets a job offer to teach at a naval academy. I mean, let's face it he's a decorated war hero and he probs knows about enemy ships, this job makes sense. Somehow (my brain hasn't totally figured this out yet) the naval academy and public school are linked. Now, they don't meet right away. First, Georg hears rumors about this adorable choir teacher and how the naval academy students have crushes on her (they're basically all boys) and the male teachers wouldn't exactly mind dating her either. They convince Georg he needs to have a go at wooing her, cause they've seen how women look at him and he speaks German already too, when Maria walks in the teacher's lounge (don't ask me how they all have the same teacher's louge I have no f'ing clue). He hears her speaking and he's dumbstruck. The other teachers then all have their turn to stare stupidly at how fast the two get off (speaking in German so no one knows it's a reunion. although realistically some of the other naval teachers probably know German). Annnnd, Georg finally has the chance to court her properly and it's f'ing adorable the entire time. And then I just sit there thinking about them going on a picnic together and him kissing her and the adolescent boys making obnoxious smooching sounds at them. And then, you know, maybe having sex on her desk or something. Whatever, it's not like I've thought about this a lot or anything... There is actually a story where they meet up and date in America, it's Why by The Lonely Goatherd on ff.net. I haven't read it in a while but I remember it being quite good. WARNING: it is unfinished, and it leaves you wanting more at a terrible spot if I remember correctly. And I've already tried PMing the author with zero luck. Oh and while I'm thinking of it HOW ADORABLE WOULD GEORG THINK MARIA IS WHEN SHE SPEAKS ENGLISH WITH A GERMAN ACCENT (maybe as adorable as it is in my head)? So ummmm, yea...there's that...

updating this thread to add an idea I just saw somewhere else on the board: reenacting the "real" story where he is in costume and she doesn't recognize him at first.

ForeverJulie, I love the idea. Have Maria teaching at a school on base; Georg comes to speak to one of the children's teachers. It's a natural meet-cute.

A couple of things I've been kicking around:
*What happens in Vienna when Georg visits Elsa? Why is he so supremely agitated when the kids and Maria are not at the villa when he returns?
*Expanding how the relationships develop between Maria and the children while he's gone. This could include them sharing their memories of good times with him before Agathe died. That could also add additional insight as to why she blows up at him after the rowboat tips over.
