So! Let's talk about Louisa! The outspoken tomboy, who seemed to lead the charge when it came to vicious pranks on unsuspecting governesses.

I always felt that Louisa was kind of lost in the shuffle of her brother's and sisters. Even when Maria is telling Georg to get his act together, she can't quite figure her out. Which I thought was kind of odd, considering I felt Louisa (out of all the children) was the most like Maria. Both tomboys who seemed to create a lot of mischief, though it was probably much more intentional on Louisa's part than Maria's. I felt she and probably Brigitta were the masterminds behind all of the pranks on the governesses. Interestingly... Angela Cartwright testing in a blonde wig for the part of Louisa. How different do you think she would have been if Louisa had been played by her?

Considering her age, my guess would be that as a young teen, Louisa could be quite moody and standoffish; uncomfortable in her own skin.

And, as Angela Cartwright was so self-assured (as we discussed in her thread), then her Louisa wouldn't have been nearly so edgy (probably not a good thing because TSOM needed that scratchiness to help it seem real).

Let's see, when I was 13... yeah, that's definitely a year I'd rather forget. Being around that age is a nightmare for just about everyone, it seems.
I definitely agree that Angela's style was far more suited to forthright and inquisitive Brigitta, not so much quiet Louisa.

i think it is funny that Louisa was supposed to be this mystery and yet we have so much that we use when we write about her, that she's a tomboy (climbing walls w/ a jar of spiders), isn't girlie girl (see: aforementioned jar of spiders). her attitude when the children are introduced to Maria seems rather spiteful and quite antagonistic to the idea of authority, and so we kinda write her as being one of the last to come around and yet really she comes running during the thunderstorm and is the first to run to Maria when she returns from the Abbey. in fact, we write so much into that last fact sometimes. i mean, i know i've done it.
my point, i guess, is that for a character that is supposed to be the one Maria couldn't quite figure out, we've got a lot to go on.

Saw the news right after Christmas lunch when Debbie posted something. So sad.

Her obituary in the London Times quotes her referring to the kids as saying that "We became a family during filming and still are." Thanks for the part you played, Heather...

Liesl will be a woman from one day to another Fredrick wants to be a man like his father Kurt pretends he is tough not to show how hurt he is Brigitta notices everything Marta and Gretl want to be loved BUT Louisa, what does she want? how she feels? what she is really thinking? if we put all the pranks aside, how is her character? => I have the impression that in these questions Maria cannot give an answer... What do you say??

For any child to have lost their mother and then had 12 governesses and a tricky father would be enough to unsettle them, but at her age (?14), it is enough for her to be very circumspect and prickly about the latest arrival. Presumably she was the leader of the gang in thinking up tricks to play on Maria's predecessors?

What do you say?? Louisa is my favorite of the kids. It is a little surprising to me that Maria didn't have something specific about her to say during the argument. Though, maybe that is one of the reasons I like her - because she is a mystery. But, as it has been pointed out, we know just as much about her personality as we do the other kids. Let me expand on your list. Liesl is not a child anymore - she's 16 and shouldn't be treated like she's 5. Plus, Maria knows she has a boyfriend. Friedrich is a boy but he wants to be a man - I'm sure he also would like to be doing/learning things that are separate/more advanced than his younger siblings. Brigitta notices everything - what has she noticed at this point? or is this just to set up that she notices Maria's red face during the Laendler? Kurt pretends he's tough - when do we see this? don't they all pretend to be tough even though they are hurt by their father's lack of love and attention? He's mostly just hungry. Marta and Gretl want to be loved - of course they do. They are so little. They fell in love with Maria the second they met her just because she was kind to them. Louisa she doesn't know about? Couldn't it be "Louisa is doing everything she can to seek your attention, yet you continue to ignore her, the way you do all of them." ? Though, the argument scene is so perfect, I have a hard time wanting to change it.

Though, the argument scene is so perfect, I have a hard time wanting to change it. However, we do not know about Louisa's thoughts on her life and her feelings... Apart from the pranks she initiates with all her siblings to gain father's attention, what else does she do? what she likes? what are her aspirations? I imagine this point Maria tries to illustrate...

Louisa I don't know about yet.
What do you think Maria is doing to get to know Louisa? Or is she just leaving her alone and waiting for her to come around and she hasn't yet because she is a moody 13 year old?
