Brigitta! The observant bookworm who was perhaps most like her father.

Brigitta was the most self-assured of the kids on screen, which is interesting given her age.

I think it was partly her character (in the stage version, Brigitta is the one that tells Maria she's in love with the Captain), and partly because Angela had more work experience that the other kids.

I have always wondered why she saunters in with her nose in a book...she has to know that isn't a good choice?

As someone who was just like that at that age (and still is to an extent), it probably wasn't a conscious choice. Even now when I'm engrossed in a book, if someone asks me to do something, I'll say yes five minutes later without looking up from my book and keep on reading without realizing it. Books are magical.

Indeed. When my older daughter first learned to read independently, she looked up from her book and told me, "Oh, mommy, I love to read. In a book you can go anywhere!"

Brigitta is hands-down my favorite.

Have you ever noticed how often Brigitta looks to Liesl for her reaction? She glances at Liesl when Georg starts singing TSOM, then again moments later when they are all crowded around Georg. She moves over to watch Liesl sing Edelweiss. She's the first to notice Liesl dancing with no one before the Laendler. She asks Liesl's opinion after Max tells her that her father would be happy they are singing in the festival. Maybe Brigitta doesn't actually "notice everything", but is just smart enough to know to look to the oldest/most mature person around to see what the appropriate reaction should be when something is going on.

I do think Brigitta notices everything, but looks to Liesl for any of three reasons: for confirmation of what she's noticed, to see if Liesl has notice, or for guidance on what to do.

I also think it says a lot about the director Robert Wise, that he should think of such a natural and normal thing for a child of that age with a much older sister to do - a touch which makes the film seem all the more real.
