This is a question I ask in every forum I'm a part of, Why is The Sound of Music considered a Christmas Movie? It tickles me that it gets treated like no other film. It is religiously played (here in the US) Once (and only once) before, during and right after Christmas. No other film I can think of gets this kind of treatment, not Star Wars, Wizard of Oz or Gone with the Wind. The film was released March 2nd 1965, no where near Christmas. Something especially odd is that they actually shot Christmas promos, considereing that there are no Christmas scenes in the film. I even stumbled upon this article: 10 Reasons You Need To Stop Pretending That The Sound Of Music Is A Christmas Movie They even play MFT on the radio during Christmas time. So what are your thoughts? Do you consider SOM a Christmas film? and Why? Why do you think we consider SOM as a Christmas film? (btw if anyone has these images in better quality could you upload them? I seem to have lost mine) Thanks.

I think it is only associated with Christmas because it is seen as a 'family' film and shown at the time of year when families are likely to be together. The Wizard of Oz used to be shown right around Easter, probably for the same reason. They shot the Christmas promos because it played as a roadshow, meaning that it was rolled out to different theaters at different times over the course of a couple of years. It was an event, with special seating, programs, etc. These shots were used in advertising for places it was opening around the holiday. My Favorite Things gets the treatment because of the lines about snowflakes and packages. That's all I've got.

I've been confused about the Christmas thing too, I mean, it's set in the summer and has Nazis in it. Doesn't exactly scream Christmas to me either. My best guess is also the family aspect, plus it's long and uncomplicated: something to fall asleep / into a food coma to.
That said, (in the UK at least) The Great Escape is also a "Christmas movie". Maybe it's the Nazi thing.

I mean I did know that it was played as a roadshow, where you had to reserve seats much like a play. But because it would have been shown in different places during the holiday that does make a lot of sense. The whole family thing kind of escapes me. I mean there are so many films out there that are family films but those aren't associated with Christmas the way SOM is.

In Denmark it's the same... I counted 3 airings during the christmas holidays this past christmas.... even on the 24th... (the day we in Denmark celebrate with big dinner and presents in the evening ) they aired it in the late afternoon!!!! (Didn't have time to watch it there... but found time one of the other days. ) And I think it's been like this for as long as I can remember.... it's just tradition I guess... just like there is this tradition on New Years eve in Denmark that they air a small sketch called "90-års-fødselsdagen" (orginaltitel: Dinner for One).... on wiki it says that it is not well known in English speaking nations!!!! though it's in English but was recorded by a German tv company.... It's very funny.... and they missed it one year several years back... the complaints from the viewers was MASSIVE....

The Ten Commandments is another annual tradition or used to be.
I have never associated it with Christmas except that it's shown at that time of year. Those promo photos are more of a mystery to me.

Hey, I'm not complaining! If it's on during Christmas break I can always watch it on my tv at home with surround sound instead of the tiny little thing we have in our dorm room

There aren't that many really good films that everyone likes, regardless of their age - with TSOM you know neither granny nor the kids will be offended, but to the contrary, will love it, so it draws people together: appropriate at Christmas!

I never considered TSOM as a Christmas nor have I considered My Favorite Things as a Christmas song. Similar thing with The Rocky Horror Picture Show being shown on TV near Halloween.
Btw, those Christmas photos of the von Trapps have always intrigued me. Were they taken after the movie was made? I believe there's also a picture of Maria cutting a roast ham (or beef?). I think she was wearing the orange striped dress that she also wore in the Do-Re-Mi carriage scene.

I know the photo you are talking about with Julie in the striped dress. It may have been part of the same photo shoot. I'll poke around and see what I can find.

I would have paid good money to see the look on Christopher's face when he was told he had to do TSOM Christmas photo shoots...

Hmm... Well I'm not too sure about the Christmas thing because I don't celebrate it and Singapore just doesn't seem to be that big on TSOM (can I just say I am extremely jealous of you all who get to watch it on the big screen hhahaha please watch it on my behalf) The english channel here usually plays films like..Love, Actually and Home Alone during Christmas hahaha
But like many other people have said before, it's considered to be a family film, everyone in the family can enjoy it, it's the kind of film that makes everyone just feel so relaxed and warm and fluffy and it really emphasises the idea and power of family (to me at least). I feel that maybe because it is of the bildungsroman genre (i don't know if I even said a legit thing but I hope you get what I mean) it is lore easy going than a lot of other movies? I mean it was and is very popular too that probably plays a part!
The roadshow thing is very interesting btw!! As for MFT, I think it's really just tthe winter and snow-related imagery hahah.

I was wondering why there were these photos of them gathered around a Christmas tree. That makes more sense now. As far as My Favorite Things goes it's played at Christmas time because of the whole Snowflakes and packages tied up with strings lines. I've never really thought it as a Christmas song myself though.

In Australia they play it on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day (can't remember which off the top of my head) and at Easter. This year if they play it on Easter Sunday (which I think they will) it will be the day after Georg's birthday. (In real life, that is)

I never really thought of it as a Christmas film and it annoys me to think My Favourite Things can be viewed as a Christmas song

A funny thing about those promo photos is that they are in a mix of costumes, suggesting that they were pulled off the set on MULTIPLE OCCASIONS to film them, or something.

The one in the first post with the whole family shows G in a suit and M in the Laendler dress, and those are the same things they're wearing in all of their "couple" shots, as well as the candid when they are sitting beside one another under the tree. They aren't ever in those outfits together in the film, though. The one that confuzzles me is when they are in the escape outfits, as I don't recall any other publicity photos with them wearing those.

I was going to say that it would be weird to not show this year since this is the 50th year anniversary of the movie. I'll just have to watch on blu ray. I don't have cable.

re: the actual topic, I referred to the film today as "everyone's favorite non-holiday holiday movie featuring catholicism, love triangles, and national socialism." but it makes us feel all fuzzy inside, just like christmas, so I guess it's ok

I guess also cause it's a classic and Christmas time is when people actually have time to sit down and watch an entire film??
