Many of us have been able to read sandra1963's unpublished story, Variations on a Theme. Since it's not published for comment, I am going to post some of my favorite things about it right here, and I hope you will reply and share what you liked about the story too! If you didn't get to read it, and you'd like to, you can PM me. I'll need an email address. OK, here goes. Things I loved: How she understands that he is becoming less restrained with her; and the hints of how he has answered her questions, given her a “guided tour,” etc. In general, the contrast between public Georg and private Georg is awesomesauce. Also I loved the insight we got into his love for her – that everything is different for him, too, starting with her hair. His angsty protectiveness of her – “don’t ever get sick.” Love seeing his weak side peeking through. Adored the shower scene. That is all. Loved the story of the blue robe. The incident with Diana was angsty and romantic – love me some scenes like that. How Maria is growing more interested in Agathe and how he is dealing with that. Also how he is dealing with his doubts about what he may have taken from Maria by marrying her. It makes them see more equal. I thought it was really clever to “flip” the vulnerability – that it’s Maria who is afraid to say that she loves him. Adorable – how she asks and then answers for herself, the question about how Rachmaninoff can play so passionately while looking passive. The touching discussion of his lost career and how it shows the way they each love each other. The scorching looks they exchange over dinner (and the sly reference to Portuguese sailors!) Maria is beginning to take the initiative – “what if I want a quick tumble?” In their encounter after the concern, there is something new and intense about him. Primitive is the word that’s used. Stellar. Out of this world. Her “I love you” shatters him. And champagne…. AND NOW I AM REALLY CURIOUS WHAT HAPPENED ON THE WEDDING NIGHT!

I'm not very good with writing and explaining things, but here goes a few words of encouragement from me. I read and loved every part of the story, and really do hope for Sandra's quick return to this, and many more of her story's over at ffnet. I did email Sandra, and voiced my love for her writing, and it still stands. I love all her stories, she's wrote so far, not just because it's about my favorite film, but because her imagination and story telling, is very up lifting, and it is always a pleasure to read. The stories always put a smile on my face, and even when I feel a little sad, I always seem to hunt Sandra stories out, Not that I don't like all your's ladies, I do. I just always seem to head back to Sandra's, love them all, and really would like to see them finished off in her own good time. Hope all this helps and makes sense.
Looking forward to your return Sandra. hope ya back soon, and all the best. xx x xx

I am so bad at writing reviews! Always just write, love it please write more! so this is my first longer review! Think I wrote you after I read your story and told you how much I loved it but will share a few throughts with you all here! But gotta say I just loved this story so much! Loved everything you have written, and it's always the stories I go back and re-read! Even converted the stories so I could put it on my kindle and take with me. So I really reay hope that Sandra will be back soon with more stories or continue with the old one, kinda left us hanging there on a few of them I loved how the stories feels real!! Not too surgary sweet or makes Maria too naive and the Captain too stiff and wooden, but you can really imagine seeing then behaving like this, being like this. Love the playfulness between them, and also how you write Maria to be a bit shy or closed of about her emotions for him, like in the earlier stories she can deal with him being grumpy and captain like but not really sure how to act around him being all flirty and loving. ( maybe more from your earlier stories?) And when she finally tells him (yells) that she love him it's something really special!! And how you write the more heavy and serious stuff, like him getting upset over them being caught in the rain, how much it worries him that she will get sick! That be just wants to protect her and just the thought of her getting sick is killing him. Also love that you write his first wife into the story, many others they just forget about her and with Maria entering his life everything is just sunshine and roses, but again you make it real! Having him still thinking about her loving her and loving his new wife just as much! And her wondering about how she was, and also knowing that she will always be a part of his life and she just have to live with that,. Love how you write the sexy/steamy stuff, not too much too explicit but just right and again you could imagine them like that. Well all I can see that I just love love love your writing your stories! And god yes!! What happened on that wedding night??? ?? So please Sandra be back soon! ❤️❤️ We miss you and your stories!

I am a massive fan of ALL Sandra1963's stories let alone Variations on a Theme, hers were the first ones I read on fanfiction.net and that then spawned my obsession with reading other people's SOM works to see how they measured up. I'm not sure if I've left reviews for all of her stories, but I am definitely going to re-read them all and make sure I do so. I love her original style of writing and her plotlines are romantic but with a dark edginess. For example the scene she wrote about Captain von Trapp and Maria at the piano in the attic drinking wine from the bottle always stood out for me, as I say romantic but with a dark edge to it. Also I love the scene she wrote about Maria having her future read by Frau Schmidt and the Lovers tarot card being picked out and the Captain revelling in Maria's unease for the same reasons (if she starts writing again hope she finishes that fan fiction as it was just hotting up). In Variations on a Theme I love the Captain asking Maria to promise not to ever get ill, that shows a vulnerable side of an otherwise unflappable man. If it was up to me I'd definitely encourage such a talented writer to dust off the old laptop again, that is if she enjoys doing so - I for one would love to read a lot more

I hear you! I love Sandra's stories, too. Who doesn't? I had the pleasure of being there when she was posting them. Including Variations on a Theme which was publish exclusively on her forum due to ff.net's mature content policies. Though now a days I don't think it really matters. She was always improving upon her stories, often rewriting them. Adding new scenes, exploring the characters further as she got to know them better and to expand them into her idea of what they were. I love her take on original characters, she created full personalities and back stories, for each and everyone of them to the point that I believed that they belonged in the SOM universe. Specifcally Peggy and Hans Schneider, the eccentric couple that were old friends of Georg's. Such a backstory to both of them, where Hans real name wasn't even Hans Schneider! I still get a kick out of that one. I loved her draws to mythology and art, particularly her comparing Maria & Georg to Persephone & Hades. I would love it if she were to write again! She had some story ideas that she had planed to write that I still think about. The engagement with TONS of chaperones, including the wonderful Schinders, Max (of course), Alicia von Trapp and Frau Whitehead. An engagement story where M/G go away with the Schneider's. There is an emergency where the Schinder's have to leave in the middle of the night and M&G end up almost having sex.

Oh, I would never use her characters or take anything she's written. But being left alone and almost having sex isn't an unusual theme in this world!

I could well imagine them in a situation like that! I mean being engaged, in love and living under the same roof! Or maybe they get stranded somewhere else during their engagement.

When I wrote "Lost," and I am not claiming an exclusive rights to the idea of unmarried M&G stranded and canoodling, I couldn't decide whether I wanted them to actually have sex or not. I actually kind of liked the idea that it was hot and heavy and .... unfinished. I decided to write it to be ambiguous, although I think 98% of reviewers assumed they did the deed. But I like being able to read it both ways.

I loved reading Variations on a Theme. In fact, I have read the chapters twice now. Sandra has such an incredible writing style. I love the notion of Georg not being the 'rough and tumble' type lover, the way Maria makes him so vulnerable and the way he can make her vulnerable as well. Through their lovemaking, we learn more about Georg and Maria as people and not just as a couple. Every scene was intimate, whether it was physical or emotional. It was a brilliant concept and such a wonderful way to open up the characters.
Would love to see so much more of Sandra's writing.
