So I was thinking the other day about this scene in the film. Why? Why? Why? I understand that Rolf is nervous but he himself knows that's the last thing he should be doing in front of an anti-nazi. What a way to warm up to dad's heart! I can just imagine it... Liesl: "Father I think there's something you need to know." Georg: "Yes?" Liesl: "I'm dating a Nazi." Also...him and Franz. I'm curious how long the two of them talked Nazi and what made them confide in each other? How did they know where the others political allegiance lie? Had they seen each other at Nazi rallys? Political meetings? Who do you think knew about them?

Well, the first bit is because he is stupid.
I often wonder about the Franz-Rolf connection. In my mind right now, Rolf thinks he is more important than he actually is, simply because as the messenger boy he would know who was visiting/sending messages/sharing information with whom. That is the only reason I can come up with for Franz asking him if there are any developments (and Rolf slips with Liesl, mentioning someone visiting another party member). Rolf also may know that Franz is sharing information about the movements of Capt. von Trapp; that would make sense of the comment that he doesn't worry about the Captain but about his daughter.

we've talked about franz and rolf elsewhere, i'm sure. the scene between them always cracks me up because franz seems to have little use for rolf as a nazi. it's like:
rolf: is everything ok? franz: yup. rolf: and the captain, he's home? franz: yes. he's eating dinner. rolf: with the family franz: (stares) yes, the family. rolf: ah, i see. carry on. franz: (thinking that if rolf is an example of the master race they are trying to create, they're screwed) look, i can't be seen talking to you. rolf: i get it. it's too dangerous. franz: yeah, that too. but mostly i want you to get lost.
it just always seems like franz is really amazed that rolf has been trusted with a bicycle, never mind sensitive nazi information.

Lol, I almost spit out my milk. Yeah, I don't really understand that whole scene where Rolf delivers a telegram to Max. I think he gets nervous at being caught throwing the rocks at Liesl's window and he see's Max who resembles Hitler and in his nervousness heil's him. I don't really find the scene necessary because you already know from later on in the film during the party that he is staunchly against the anschluss so to me it just always seems like a filler scene. I don't know.

Maybe to counter the lakeside scene with Elsa. To show she doesn't really fit with him for political reasons... Among other reasons. Because what follows from the Rolf scene is the 'no way to stop it' moment w/ Max and Elsa.

Yes, keeping it allowed that bit of E and G's disparate views into the story. Ditching the songs was a good decision, though.

Yes, I can see that, but we would have got the same idea on that from when Liesl receives that telegram from him before they come back from their honeymoon. I think I would have rather have seen a scene about more of the developing relationship between M&G, but alas that's what fanfiction is for I guess.

This is not relevant to this topic in the slightest, but when thebeestings said "Mr. Austria", I immediately pictured some sort of Miss World-type beauty pageant (as for our man's talent? Whistles, duh.). I'm sorry, my mind works in weird ways coming home from nightshift.

Hey according to Maria that whistle was what did it for her. I can't blame her, is there any man out there who can blow his whistle with more finesse and agility of the fingers and make it seem so riveting? How did we go from Rolf to talking about Georg again? Does everything in this forum lead back to our man? Lol!
