I'm putting him in with Frau Schmidt since he qualifies as the help. I don't often think much about Franz, but utility_singer brought up something in her wonderful story "Matchmaker" that got me thinking -- something to the effect of Franz being fit to be a spy if he had any ambition. It hit me right then, why Georg bothers to keep him around even though he's a Nazi sympathizer (which I'm wholly convinced that Georg is aware of). Keep your friends close, and your enemies closer. It's incredibly shrewd of him, when you think about it. Though it does make me wonder if, in the end, that was such a wise choice, since it was probably Franz who was responsible for making sure the Nazi entourage showed up.

"Pain and Passion" not "Matchmaker", but yes. And thank you.
It also helps to explain that little scene with Rolf that always irks----about whether Georg is dining with the family. It isn't just because then he knows Liesl will sneak out to join him; perhaps it is so Rolf can return to his boss with confirmation of Georg's whereabouts, and whether anyone else is dining with them/him that evening.

I can only think that Franz is an 'old retainer', ie has been working for the family for years ( may be coming up to retirement) which stops G from sacking him (he might only have an inkling which is insufficient to act upon).

It was him for certain. Unless Frau Schmidt has hidden depths beyond a little gossip...
Wonder what the Nazi's offered him in exchange for selling out? Or maybe they threatened him?

Franz: ok I'll do. But you'll have to do something for me. Promote that Rolf kid outta the mail room. Anything as long as he stops coming around here.
And this just reminded me that I had a franz story where his act if betrayal was actually to spare a family member (a brother I think... Or maybe it was a sister) who was married to a Jew.
I wonder what I did with my notes for that story...

Hey! Frau Schmidt as a sort of spy - YES! That would give the story a REAL twist at the end to surprise everyone! Hmm - shame you now all know about that, because it would have made a great whodunit...

HAHAHA, nice one, gothicbutterfly95! Hahahahaha, oh, my God. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought of it before and laughed, but I've never actually gone and done it.
