I think so much of it is determined by the lighting of the photos. She was probably a dark blonde as a child, darkened to brunette as she got older. The reddish tones she's had for the past umpty-ump years suit her very well, though. I just read a bit in the new book where they wanted to add some golden highlights to her hair for TSOM, but it turned orange, so they went full-on ---which indicates brunette hair with red tones. That's exactly what happened to my mother, a brunette, when she tried to go blonde in 1968. Made for some fun family photos!

I think her natural hair colour is brunette (like dark blond/brunette - mouse colour as my sister calls it). I'm pretty sure I once read that Julie used the opportunity during the filming of Star! (since she was wearing lots of wigs) to grow out the blond colour from TSOM to her natural brunette colour. And a lot of the early '60's footage (i.e. before TSOM) shows her as a brunette.

Our daughter went from very blonde at 4 to mid-brown by 14 (but it bleaches easily back to blondy in the summer sun) - maybe another reason why Julie's hair varies.
Really enjoyed seeing these photos- new ones on me!

Yea, it's common for blonde hair to get darker. My brother had very blond hair when he was little, it was almost white looking, but as he got older it darkened some. Today it's more of a brown with blond highlights. I think Julie red/blond tint looks good on her because of those blue eyes and fair skin.

Thanks everyone! I guess we can say that she was a dark/ash blonde then became a brunette. Again, I never had blonde hair so I find it quite interesting to see how people's hair colours go from blonde to brunette. Genetics at work!

My hair got darker even as an adult. I have always been brunette, but I had blondish red highlights in it and I was a lighter brunette. When I got pregnant with my kids it got a little darker and now the blond highlights don't show as much. Of course now I'm in my upper 30s and starting to get a few silver highlights here and there, lol, but not too noticeable yet except in certain light.

Since we're still on the hair topic, can we safely assume that she has naturally straight hair? I've seen some childhood pics where she had wavy-ish hair. I've heard of some people who were born with straight hair but as they got older it became wavy. Again, I'm not an expert in this since I've always had straight hair... I have no idea why I'm so curious about this...

That's Ok to be obsessed by Julie's hair. I have to admit, I'm such a Julie fan that I can look at a photo of her an pinpoint (within a few years) when the photo was taken just due to her hair style. I know, I'm a FREAK!!!

Fascinating to look at those photos and see a child grow into the charismatic vocal beauty we know from her films!

I find that her childhood photos don't resemble much of the Julie that we know of today. Her teenage photos look more recognizable. In other words, if I were to see a photo of kid Julie for the first time, I would have never known that was her. When I look at childhood pictures of other celebrities, there are some features that never change. Well, I suppose I too am one of those people who are unrecognizable in their childhood photos. Oh well

The second one in the first post is the one that most resembles 'grown up' Julie, of all the early photos.

For me though I find there are very few pictures of her (even when she's young) that I can't see some aspect of the Julie we all know and love in. I find if I really look at the face I can totally see her in it.

Someone asked about straight or wavy - my hair is wildly different depending on what season it is. In winter when it's dry, it's smooth and straight and just sort of lies there. In summer when it's humid, it suddenly comes to life: my nonna thought I had curled my hair yesterday when I didn't, and I could barely get it in a ponytail this morning. So there's that possibility.
