So insightful and very well thought out! I never realized that about the Toby Reiser Quintet either. Interesting read.

It's an interesting article, but that isn't correct. The Toby Reiser quintet is heard playing behind Max and the children when Zeller confronts him at the festival venue. This screencap shows many more than five musicians at the party:

Maybe that's why I didn't realize it, lol.

I'm still trying to work out exactly who's who from the screencap.

A quintet doesn't have a separate conductor, and I count 7 possibly 8 players in the screen cap.

Can I take this opportunity to say that conductor irritates the heck out of me?

Can I take this opportunity to say that conductor irritates the heck out of me? Lol, why is that? We only see him for a brief few seconds. That's a pretty long baton he's using.

I always thought he kinda looked like Franz...

I don't know, he just looks so uncomfortable, and it seems like his pattern gets screwed up halfway through his little scene. Maybe I'm too nitpicky. Also, looks like that's his bow he's using; he's got a violin in his other hand.

So is he a conductor or a violinist? Or both?

Often small chamber ensembles will have the first violinist act as conductor, though they typically conduct as they play (as the Toby Reiser Quintet does when we see them rehearsing at the festival venue).

So is he a conductor or a violinist? Or both? He's both and he is conducting with his bow. The song is a waltz, waltzes are written in 3/4 time signature, but are conducted in one which is how he is conducting it. I guess I don't notice anything unusual in his conducting pattern. It looks pretty normal to me. He does turn around and looks at the dancers so this may cause him to look a little funny, but overall it seems like a pretty normal waltz pattern.

I didn't really think they were the Toby Reiser quintet. Because I can count. I do agree that the conductor bears a scary resemblance to Franz - maybe another Nazi spy in the household? And I also think he annoys me because I get annoyed every time the film jumps over something I really wanted to see. I 'm all ready to dive into party preparation and there's that darn conductor. I feel that way about the little boy ringing the bells after the wedding, too.

I love watching those dancers (sign of my age - I can remember when I was a kid I had no time for them at all).
They just seem to be the epitome of elegance and - well, just having fun, in particular the couple shown in the screencap above catch my eye, where the lady wears a pink ballgown. Somehow these two seem to be having REAL fun - just look at their expressions! They seem to dance twice as fast as the others - do you think they are having an affair?! An on-set Georg and Maria?

If I were there I would be having fun. I Think the dance scene was just fun in general, even Julie somewhere mentions how much fun it was to do that scene.

It would be a good project to do a thorough viewing of the party scene and focus on the extras, not only on the dance floor but during So Long Farewell, and so on. utility_singer told me that people in those scenes stay in character - like when we see Georg chatting with his guests while Elsa approaches him for the waltz, they're not saying, "so what time do you think we'll finish today?" I always say I'm going to watch once and really study the extras but I always get distracted by the Laendler.
