Ah, it is true, Maria does sort of sweep in and unknowingly steals his heart, but I still think that he never really loved Elsa the way that he should have or it never would have ended that way. He cares for her and likes her even, but he doesn't love her in an all consuming passionate sort of way (if that makes sense) so in a way it's more his fault than Maria's that things turned out the way they did for Elsa. I think in the back of his head he didn't think that kind of love would ever exist for him again so he was willing to settle for companionable love. I'm sympathetic towards her more now than I was when I was younger because I see things in a different light, but I still wouldn't have wanted Maria and Georg to have ended up any other way than with each other.

Oh yes, yes yes to all that clarinetjamie. You are so right and I totally agree. I would never want Maria and Georg to be with anyone except each other, but I do feel bad for her. And I can definitely believe Georg thought he could settle for marrying her with the relationship they have, until Maria comes along. And that was a gorgeous post augiesannie

Wonderful to read that all of Elsa's ensembles (presumably couture outfits) would be at home in some circles in present-day Vienna!
Thanks Anne - a posting worthy of our Baroness...

I can easily believe that her costumes would fit into nowadays. In fact, that's probably the case with a lot of the outfits. The film was 1930s mixed with the 1960s.

This is a fabulous take on Elsa! I especially like the observation that she is always "studying", which she is. And that once Max was taken with Maria, Elsa had no ally in the situation. And I love the line about how her balcony speech is just as she'll say it happened to her friends back in Vienna, which is absolutely true! She definitely had to frame this so that she broke up with him.
Plus, Maria the Conqueror made me laugh.
Great article!

"Sleek amusing figure in a stunning wardrobe" - THIS.
Elsa is 100% a fabulous, complex woman but is 100% wrong for Georg.

oh my GOSH this is awesome. Favorite phrases: "micro-cheated," "weaponized her femininity," "a certain ecclesiastical capital," "to remind him just one more time what he is giving up," "his life soon starts falling apart after the wedding," (as though G dumping E is responsible for the Anschluss - I love the suggestion that Elsa would have been better able to help Georg make his peace with Herr Z). And the idea that the outcome was better for the Reverend Mother than for G. And that the moral of the story is to marry the right person (beautiful scene in parlor) vs. the wrong person (being dumped in a lake). All tongue in cheek of course. what a wonderful way to start the day. Thanks indigoblue!

hahahahaha. I agree with all of your favorite phrases augiesannie. They are especially effective because the narrator is speaking with such a calm serious voice. It's hilarous. The part about how Catholics fire someone made me laugh out loud. Good find,Indigo!

Since we missed the anniversary of the death of our heroine, Eleanor Parker. aka the Baroness, in December, I think the Baroness Fan Club should organise a picnic to commemorate her, and to celebrate the New Year. All welcome, come suitably dressed (see below): MENU Schnitzel with Noodles (pork) or Wiener(=Vienna) Schnitzel for those of you who prefer veal Crisp Apple Strudel or Blueberries and Strawberries with Chocolate icing (Brigitta's Favourite Thing) DRINKS Champagne (Elsa and Liesl's favourite) or Pink Lemonade [And for any passing lonely goatherd, Beer with foam afloat and a small Table d'Hote] LATER Tea with Jam and Bread DRESS CODE: Haute Couture. Here are a few aide memoires to guide you: See you there or be square! Wet Weather Programme: If the weather is inclement, then we may have to hold it in some glittering salon somewhere...

That's way she was so sure in herself and didn't pictures Maria like possible treat and probably M was clueless about what going on...

Yes, I don't think WE thought Maria was a threat to Elsa until...when? At what point did YOU think "Hmm,hmm, is there a little SOMETHING going on here?!"

Yes, I don't think WE thought Maria was a threat to Elsa until...when? At what point did YOU think "Hmm,hmm, is there a little SOMETHING going on here?!" First, regarding your earlier post, I have to say that Elsa makes all of her outfits looks so stunning when they don't necessarily look that way in the pictures without her wearing them. Second, when do we know something is going on...I'm going with The Apology. I was tempted to say The Argument, but I think they were still infuriated with each other at that point. The Apology allows the walls to come down and them to show respect for one another. Nothing is obvious at that point, still I think it shows a spark of compatibility. Then with the looks after the puppet show in the next scene, everyone (Elsa especially) knows what's going on. Which is why I like stories about the time inbetween The Apology and the puppet show because I think a lot has transpired relationship wise.
