Did you ever wonder about this? We see that some of Maria's dresses come from the material Frau Schmidt brings her the first night, like the striped material she's wearing in the carriage during Do Re Mi - but where, exactly, did she get the material for the Laendler and Gazebo dresses? Did the Captain keep sending her material? Or did she raid the drapes from the guest wing?

LOL! A lot of stories talk about her shopping a lot. Maybe our girl was a secret clothes horse.

Usually in fanfics people will explain that she got one or both of them as a gift from either the Captain or the children as a thank you. I've always been partial to the explanation of Liesl (and the other children too, but mostly Liesl and the girls) convincing their father that they need to get Maria a present. Then, Liesl convincing Maria that they need to give her a present and all of them taking a trip to town to get the dress(es).
On a similar note, since the children have mostly been wearing uniforms, and the Captain doesn't approve of the "old drapes" as playclothes, I'm sure they had to go shopping for some new clothing for the children as well.

well, both these replies make sense and help with another mystery: where does she get all of those nice matching low-heeled pumps? Her black boots somehow never reappear, ever notice that?

that is a great one. there's another one (no idea what it's called and couldn't begin to try and figure it out) where the blue material was Elsa's and she gives it to Maria b/c she doesn't think it is fashionable enough for her tastes. She gives it to her kind of like throwing bread at a beggar. Then it all backfires because she makes a stunning dress and the Captain can't keep his eyes off her.

me too! Although . . . I mean, I'm not a man . . . but Elsa in her party dress vs. Maria in the gazebo dress? There are lots of reasons to love Maria, but I don't think that dress beats out Elsa's. I LOVE Elsa's party dress.

i agree. the baroness did have some pretty fine clothes. although, i have to say, not a fan of that red number she wore during the rowboat scene.

I seem to remember on the old TSOM forum, someone asked where her green dress came from when she came back from the abbey. It evolved that it had belonged to the prospective postulant who was being interviewed by the Rev Mother immediately before Maria (when she declares her love). If you check you can see the dress, which was presumably taken away from the new postulant as a 'wordly good',and given to Maria. (It certainly fits better than her drab skirt, which is what she left in!)

I LOVE Elsa's party dress. Not all men---my husband would choose Maria in her simpler clothes over Elsa every day of the week. I think Georg obviously did; after the conversation with Elsa about him being more relaxed in his "natural habitat", rather than her Viennese salons, it would follow that he'd prefer the natural beauty of Maria over the glittery, 'don't touch' of Elsa's perfection.

Oh shoes, maybe she had them in her carpet bag Not sure if Maria truly liked shopping for clothes. Maybe for fabric. How did she ever find the time to sew all those clothes with seven kids running around wanting het attention.

Mary Poppins could pull all sorts of things out of her carpet bag, why can't Maria? I'm of the opinion that Frau Schmidt would have convinced Maria that she'd need to 'dress' the part of governess to a baron's children; and either send her shopping or possibly purchase things for her to wear (including shoes).

I recall one story had an idea (that I liked) that it was the children who wanted to do something nice for Maria and had the Captain buy a dress for her. As she didn't have any formal clothes for dinners. The material on the bottom (that Frau Schmidt gives Maria) looks like the Laendler dress but in a darker shade.
