Maria's comment "You don't look very much like Sea Captain, Sir" always gets me thinking about how she thought he should look, and a beard always seems to feature.
Believe it or not, The World Beard Competition took place last weekend in Leogang near Salzburg (yes, really), and it struck me it was just the sort of thing the Captain may have paid a visit to all those years ago...this set of whiskers on an Austrian gentleman caught my eye, and I though "Oh, YES!"
But then I thought perhaps Maria wouldn't have been able to get in close up for that Gazebo Kiss, so maybe not...shame...

I have to say that I much prefer our sea captain without the beard, but then again, I'm not very big on facial hair, with the exception of a few men I know that couldn't see without it. It fits their personality. It just depends, but personal preference is clean shaven.

I also prefer clean-shaven almost all the time. I have to admit that imagining that work of art on CP's face had me pretty amused though.
don't you think it would be strange to have facial hair? wouldn't it tickle your nose? doesn't food get in it? do you have to shampoo it or use face wash? so many questions.

I actually read an article recently about the cleanliness of facial hair. I won't got into detail here, but it was pretty gross to say the least.

I've been with a bearded gentleman for 30 years, so I'm not sure I belong in this thread, but let me assure you that cleanliness, colds, food, - none are dealbreakers. No problems in the kissing department either. And no comment on the tickling. Of course, my husband is nothing like that unique specimen indigoblue dug up - how DO you do it, darling?

So true augiesannieI too have a bearded gentleman, and I prefer it that way. It's really never been a problem because he is more meticulous with that beard that I am with my hair--and I have really long hair! Of course if ever grew anything even remotely close to what that man in the picture is sport in there would strong words and a pair of scissors involved!

I just turned over the page of the Times newspaper and there he was, smiling at me - he has the most gorgeous eyes, as well as magnificent whiskers -
Imagine my surprise when I saw that the World Beard Championships took place near SALZBURG!
Here are a couple more possibilities for our Captain (very dark and mysterious):
Or for the Laendler, maybe something a little more sophisticated? -
But I think I'll go for this one - especially if it is Mr P reclining there amongst the coils of rope, I would SOON be entwined!

Oh I'm loving that pic... and yes... wouldn't mind it being Mr Plummer laying there ...

Aha! At last we have our Sea Captain! Do you think this is what Maria was thinking of when she said "You don't look at all like a Sea Captain, Sir?" Regret in frustration I have had to attach this photo because Photobucket refuses to allow us to post here (see Mie 779's post above). My attempts to use the Insert Image button on this toolbar have failed because if I Copy and Paste the URL of the photo it doesn't come up in the pop-up box. Anyone kind enough to write some step-by-step instructions for Dumdums like me? Thanks...

if it's on photobucket's end, I have no idea what to tell you. I wouldn't worry about it at this point.
and yes, I think that is exactly what maria thought he'd look like, lol
