I had read about the infamous swimsuit, but I have to say, that was more than I expected. Oh my! As if I needed anything else to think about.

I was curious and watched it. All I have to say is that it certainly turned my face as red as Maria's at the end of the Laendler. What's funny to me is that I was looking at 1930s pictures the other day and it seems to me that men's everyday regular swim trunks have gotten a lot more conservative in nature while women's seem to have become more skimpy. Maybe it's just me, but looking at some of those photos the men's suits didn't leave much to imagination even in the 1930s.

I swam competitively all the way through college and it never failed that the boys wore regular long swim trunks or sweatpants over their tiny speedos until they absolutely had to strip down at the last second. Maybe I'd better watch the video again for another comparison, you know for science...

What, talking about how hot Christopher Plummer is, especially in those tight swim trunks? LOL! There are other things I COULD say, but it might get this board shut down.

I was trying to find a thread about Georg's (well CP's really) weight fluctuations during this film. I couldn't find one, so I'm just sticking this here.
I have read that he was drinking and gaining weight and his costumes had to be refitted. I don't really notice it much. Which scene(s) do you think he is lightest versus heaviest? Does this correspond with the first scenes they filmed through the last (so was he gaining steadily through filming, or going up and down during filming)?

In Salzburg, and during his travelling in the surroundings when he did not work, he was eating a lot of sweets and drinking beers. So he gained weight. You can see him at all the external scenes at Salzburg. It can be seen in the scenes at the night of the festival when they all sing on stage I think... In all the internal scenes, which were filmed in the studio in California, he has lost the extra weight.

wooowww haha Indeed in great shape!! I love these times when people were normally fit and trained, not like today that most men look like body builders and women like athletes...

Yes,I think the timing of the scenes is quite erratic, depending on where they were filmed. So you can't go through the film chronologically to see a gradual progression.I think he mentioned Viennese pastries at one point, Schnapps at another!

All of that plus a back injury that kept him in bed for a few weeks contributed to weight gain. It's hard to notice, TBH. There is one scene where his jacket seems tight, but I haven't watched in a while and can't recall which one it is.

I seem to remember that in the lakeside scene with Elsa he does look very slim, and his suit fits well. But, although I adore him in his dark suit in the gazebo, it doesn't seem to fit as well - maybe because he was a little porky by then? All the more for Maria to hug...
He also looks a bit podgier than normal when you see him from the side in the hall when Maria arrives; I can't remember the sequence in which these scenes are shot, but perhaps this was one of the later ones?

What scene do you think he looks the best in? I know there are threads on favorite outfits or best hair styles, and opinions are easily colored based on your feelings about the particular scene. But overall, what is your top "wow, he looks great!" moment?

I don't think there is a scene where he doesn't look good, but the formal wear scenes are irresistible.

Maybe he would wear chinos with an oxford shirt and rolled up cuffs. A nice pair of boots and the cuffs rolled up on his pants rolled up a bit. Do you think he's a belt or a suspenders kind of man? I like belt because... reasons... I'm straight, but... r e a s o n s

Slightly off topic, I have never really understood swim suits. It is embarrassing for someone to see you in your underwear, but fine for anyone to see you in a bikini or a speedo? I am a very modest person. My swimsuit is shorts and a t shirt that are made to go in the water. What's the appeal of skimpy swimwear? To get tan? To show off your toned body? I'm old fashioned, I know.

Agreed, it's weird - except that if you are caught in your undies then it is probably because you have been caught 'unawares', which is embarrassing. But if you have put on a bikini then you presumably are preparing for people to see you with not much on, which is ok. Perverse!
On another slightly off-topic, I find it difficult to reconcile our hunky captain with this rather unsophisticated-looking male, both in terms of the way he looks and his general deportment. Is it the same man?! All credit to him for his acting talent to convince us of Georg's aristocratic credentials, but how is it the captain LOOKS so different facially?

I've always been amazed by HOW different CP looks not only in every film, but every scene in TSOM - I can never work out whether it is simply through make-up, hairstyling etc, or whether CP has an amazing ability to change according to his character, or even the mood of his character?
When I have time, I will post some pics to illustrate this. (Compare him to Julie, who always seems the same).
Forensic8, have you any film buff insights as to how he does it?!

What do you think Georg's fitness routine is/how does he stay in shape? Does he swim in the lake? Does he do push-ups in his room before he gets ready in the morning? What would be normal for exercise for a person at that time and place?

Never thought about it that way, but I guess it is true. It's moments like that, that make me wish he didn't gain weight while filming. I mean, they did a good job covering it up with the costumes, but the scenes that were filmed earlier are just sooo delicious. Hello! I've always wondered where I can find information about the order in which the scenes were recorded. Perhaps in a thread of this forum? I know the first scene was My Favorite Things but I'm dying to know the actual recording order, In fact we could analyse CP's weight much better LOL

Some of the books published about the making of TSOM give details of the filming of different scenes - The Making of the Sound of Music may well have something, but there are plenty of others.

It has the film schedule in it. I'll attach it. I think I'll need another post to get the last page. (Hopefully this is not some sort of copyright infringement since I am posting pictures from a book - augiesannie let me know if this is not ok and I'll delete this post.)
