Dear Father, now I know why you sent me here. To help these children prepare for a new mother. And I pray this will become a happy family in Thy sight. God bless the captain. God bless Liesl and Friedrich. God bless Louisa, Brigitta, Marta and little Gretl. And I forgot the other boy. What’s his name? Well, God bless what’s-his-name. God bless the Reverend Mother and Sister Margaretta and everybody at the abbey. And now, dear God, about Liesl. Help her know that I’m her friend and help her tell me what she’s been up to.First I would like to ask you to just take a look around the bedroom and comment on things you notice and what that might suggest about the family or Maria. Then say what you want about the eyes behind her head thing and how she knew Liesl was there. Aaaaaand go.

This is an utterly random observation. You can tell this was on a soundstage in the United States. Look at the lamp. Then look below it and on the wall, located in between the two table legs and just above the bed's lower horizontal railing, you will see a 120-volt type B electrical outlet with 2 sockets. It is found in North and Central America, as well as Japan, but definitely not in Austria. Nothing is plugged into the outlet. www.worldstandards.eu/electricity/plugs-and-sockets/

And is that meant to be a gaslight?! Er...perhaps that is why it isn’t plugged in -

This is entirely the fault of lemacd, who instructed us to look around the room. I did.

I just rewatched this and noticed that Maria's room had three doors: the entrance one, the bathroom one and there's an unknown one next to the table, I wonder where that door led.
Considering the size of the room, the new materials for dresses and the new drapes, I can tell the captain was very thoughtful and did care for his children. He seemed like trying to make the governess comfortable so that she would stay.
Maria definitely had noticed Liesl sneaking out during dinner. Maybe She saw her running back to the house while closing a window, so as soon as she heard the footsteps, she knew it must have been her.

mega points for the whole 'saw her while closing the window' idea. i never considered that and i like it.
and the outlet thing. well spotted. And I never noticed another door. I want to know where it goes. Maybe a closet. Maybe it connects her to the nursery. Maybe it connects to somewhere else. Fanfic anyone?
I was noticing the cross sitting on the table, wondering if it was already there or if Maria brought it and put it there as soon as she unpacked her meager things.
An observation made watching scene is that we are told Liesl climbed up, that Louisa can do it with a jar in her hand, etc... but if you watch, Charmian comes at the window straight, no climbing involved at all.

I never noticed the third door either! Connecting to the nursery would make sense except Maria's room is on the other side of the staircase from the children (which has always bothered me!)

At first I thought the third door might connect to the closet, however there's an armoire in the room already (like what Frau Schmidt said "How many dresses does a governess need?" ); Then I was thinking nursery, but when the children rushed into the room during thunderstorm, they were from the right side of the entrance while the third door was on the left side. Also as tsomlyss pointed out, Maria's room was on the other side of the staircase from the children. So I think the chance of nursery is slim unless it's some kind of special classroom. Considering Maria's room was an end unit (windows on two sides), I guess the third door may connect to a hidden stairway or a servants' entrance that goes to the other side of the house or downstairs.

The man who always looks like CP is the choreographer Marc (forgotten his surname - do fill me in...!)
See more about him at the bottom of the thread in Background/The people who made TSOM.

Marc Breaux? He and his then wife Dee Dee Wood worked in Mary Poppins and The Sound of Music and many other musicals during that time.

Good catch on the extra door, that would appear to go into the hallway (or is a very skinny closet). But is there another extra door in her room? Look at these pics. The first one is the beginning of this thread when she is kneeling down praying. Look all the way to the left in this pic. Is that a door behind the curtain? Then look at the second pic when she's had the brilliant idea to make the drape play clothes. Doesn't it look like this corner of her room has changed? Or am I just seeing things? Attachments:

Methinks you are just seeing things
But looking at these 2 screencaps tells me Julie is always so convincing in everything she does.

Do you think Liesl would have made it back to her room unnoticed if Maria hadn't stopped her to talk? If Franz or Frau Schmidt had seen her would they tell the captain?

I think Maria would have spotted her even if she made it to the door. Maria seems to be on the alert even though she was praying. If Franz had seen her I can see him telling the captain, but with Frau Schmidt I think she is more sympathetic towards the children so I think she would have kept it to herself.

How did Liesl get so filthy? Her dress is covered in mud on both the front and the back. Did she slip on the wet grass? Did she fling herself on the ground in excitement over how wonderful her new boyfriend is? **eye roll**

Yes, he heard her squealing in the gazebo while he was mounting his bike and ran back to find out what the trouble was.
Then he became the trouble with her and I will not repeat the verb above as you will think me naughty.
So when you say filthy...

I have finally figured this! This has literally bothered me for years. All of the windows are boxed out! I noticed it in the downstairs sitting room and thought for a second that I had found "another" secret door. The window box outs have a similar pattern to the doors in the house. If you only see part of the box out, it almost looks like part of a door hiding behind the curtains. Which brings me to a question that Silver-White-Winters posed recently (though for the life of me I can't find the thread right now) about potential secret passageways. I no longer think there is one in the governess's room (scandalous!), but with a large house like that, it would make sense that there would be some secret places right? At least a secret safe for important documents? I have read a fanfic with a secret stair between Georg's room and his study. This is a fun idea. Where do you think Georg would design in secret passages? His room to his study? His room to the library?

I do believe he had a secret place for important documents, heirlooms, money, etc. I honestly do think that there were secret passages in the villa. There are multiple reasons on why there would be passages (too many to count maybe?). One such reason, would be to escape the children. Because parents need "alone time" sometimes. On a side note, in my story, 'My Maria' *spoiler alert*, there is a secret study. Which if you have read the latest chapter, you know what it is and what happens. Also, new chapter is in the works!

In the UK, many very old houses have secret passages and hiding places in the panelling, because in the 1500 and 1600s, Catholic families were not allowed to practise their religion as the monarchy was Protestant (it swung back and forth a few times, depending on the religion of the monarch at the time.). As a result, families built passageways and stairs for people prominent in that religion to escape if hostile troops came, and in particular, Priests' Holes, where ministers who were visiting the house to take a service were literally 'holed up' for weeks sometimes, for their own safety. The family would take them food for them to eat each day.
I don't know enough about Austrian history to know if this sort of thing happened there too. It brings me to question the date the Villa von Trapp was built, because this may tell us whether it existed in any tricky religious times. Anybody want to have a guess at the date of building of the villa?

It brings me to question the date the Villa von Trapp was built, because this may tell us whether it existed in any tricky religious times. Anybody want to have a guess at the date of building of the villa? Hello! I was reading up on things regarding the Von Trapp villa one day (I was going to use it for one of my main projects in one of my subjects. Haha architecture student here), and after some research, I did find that it was built in the 1860s. I also went looking for actual floor plans, perhaps made as they were refurbishing, should the original floor plans have been lost (well, I mean, it was from the 1860s soooooo), but sadly, I couldn't find any. I haven't touched on Austrian history as much, either, except a little bit of light reading on the '30s onwards. But given that the von Trapps were aristocrats, though, I don't think that it would be uncommon if they did have some secret passages! Perhaps to help them escape should there be an emergency? Not sure, but it does seem like an interesting idea that I would want to research on more! edit: I just realized that the floor plan I did see came from this forum. Thanks for the lovely plans, IndigoBlue! 'Twas really nice to see the possible layout of the villa ♡

How did Liesl get so filthy? Her dress is covered in mud on both the front and the back. Did she slip on the wet grass? Did she fling herself on the ground in excitement over how wonderful her new boyfriend is? **eye roll** It's mentioned in the musical, but not the movie, that she climbed up the trellis, and if you read Charmian's memoir, Bob Wise told she had to be dirty because she's meant to have climbed the trellis. So exactly how she got in there from a meta/filmmaking standpoint, in-universe I think she would've climbed the trellis, which in the dark and the rain, probably was dirty.

I was reading in Forever Liesl that the lightning strike sound effects were so loud that Charmian kept missing when she was supposed to climb in the window because she couldn't hear what Julie was saying. They ended up having Julie say "God bless what's his name" extra loudly so Charmian knew when to come in. She said it makes her cringe to hear it when she watches the movie, though I don't think it sounds overly loud at all. Maybe a little louder, but Julie did a wonderful job at making that seem like she was exasperated with herself for forgetting Kurt's name, not that she was shouting to give an actress her cue. Knowing this makes me smile when I watch this scene though. I always expect this line to be louder than it actually is.
Why do you think she forgot Kurt? Not judging, I would never be able to remember 7 names after hearing them twice. His just seems like an easy name. I wonder how they picked who she forgot.

I'm going to say random. He's in the middle, wasn't close to her at dinner, the older ones were intimidating and the younger ones adorable... etc etc
