I spent a happy hour or two this week watching TSOM to try to sort out the floor plans. The result is below, although some of it does not quite add up, so any suggestions are welcome! Please click on image to view. please visit this link to see attachments

LOVELOVELOVE THIS! I am so happy I want to dance. Wait, I can go into the ballroom for that. I just tapped on it until it opened up in a separate window and then it was plenty big. But really, I want to frame it. I never really stopped to ponder, before, that the Laendler terrace had to be different from the back terrace. I wondered about the kitchen, but I think it's in the basement... Now let's all have some fun conjecturing about what goes on in the question mark room.

i'll have to ponder the question mark room for a bit and try to come up with something brilliant. or at least something.
indigoblue, this is so great. i can't really see anything amiss... and had to think 'there's a fountain? oh yeah, there's a fountain!!' pure genius.
love it love it love it.

Delighted you like it - there is more to come when we have fully digested the downstairs area! I ought to say that the 'saloon' is not a Wild West bar!! It was the name given to a rather grand sitting room at that time.
I was confused because, looking at the main façade when Maria arrives, there are 5 windows on either side of the front door. However, the most windows we see on the left side in the house is the one in the dining room behind Maria when she is eating ( during the pine cone incident). Presumably the rest of the windows are for the kitchens, which would logically be beside the dining room. You can see the tall stove in the sitting room directly behind Georg when he is at dinner, and it is visible again in the Edelweiss scenes, so that told me the position of the room where they eat.
The library is purely my conjecture, because a house of this size would always have had a library; I suppose the study is too, but Georg disappears off towards that door with his post when they return from their honeymoon. He also needs somewhere on that side of the house from where to have spied Maria when she returns from the Abbey, so I have put his study there.
Enjoy!

Yes, and I think his study goes there for another reason: that's where Franz goes to fetch him ("fetch" is so not the right word, but I"m late for work) when she first arrives. I'll have to come back here on the kitchen, this is too delicious to rush. This is really one of my top TSOM posts ever.

I suspect Franz would have informed the Captain of Maria's arrival, and left it at that, allowing him to make up his own mind as to what to do next (it's all to do with subservience).
On the subject of which, delighted to be of service to you, Madam!

Yes, I have the 2nd Floor plan up my sleeve, and also a few variations/additions which might be of interest and amusement to you for your consumption in due course.
I have realised, though, that I haven't drawn the downstairs as well as I could; the villa is meant to be totally symmetrical both front and back, but because I drew it as I was going along, watching the film and putting in the rooms as it went, it hasn't turned out exactly that way! So if you want a better plan, you might want to wait until I get time to rejig it a bit (maybe this week - who knows!)
By the way, Louisa, tell me a bit about your SIMS game - I haven't caught on to this one! Sounds good (to an old dinosaur like me...especially if you can have SOM characters in it!)

BTW Indigo - I think people have complained before that one sees front windows from outside the house that don't seem to exist on the inside, but you may have cracked the code, I think, by turning the dining room table 90 degrees. But I didn't quite get what you were saying about the kitchen???

Indigo- the Sims 3 is a game where you will make your own characters, build their house, and control their lives. It's up to you wether your sims are good or bad, successful or not, beautiful or ugly and more. You will make their appearance, choose their trait, pick their partners and have a family. It's similar to the real life. I'm totally addicted to this game coz it is so fun. Try to search the net for more info

This is so great, Indigoblue! As for the kitchen, I'd say it's more in the basement: in elegant houses like this one, it's said to be there, so that they can avoid noises and smells invading the rooms.
Speculated about the question mark room as well. What about a music room directly connected to the ballroom? I haven't seen any door in the ballroom that could open into it, though...

Yes, the kitchen: it could well be in the basement, Tranquillity. My idea was that, if it was on the floor shown above, it would account for some of the windows to the left of the front door, and would be next to the dining room (although I haven't shown it). I will have to think about that...other suggestions for the ? room are: Butler's area (to look out for guests arriving, cleaning boots and silver etc), schoolroom, or indeed a music room. In the meantime, here is the upstairs as I pieced it together; I have put in the garden and courtyard as before so you can orientate yourselves. And yes, there does seem to be a room behind the balcony (you can see it in the Balcony Scene with G & E). What might that be used for? Have a look! please visit this link to see attachments

Oh, I am so happy I could dance again. No ballroom upstairs though. I think you might need a schoolroom, I think you have room in there somewhere? Also - I wonder what the childrens' bedroom arrangements were, any thoughts?

PS indigo, I am comforted by the image of Franz cleaning the Captain's boots. "Are there any developments" indeed.

i watched a play this weekend and the characters were always going to the drawing room to play the piano. it was offstage but i thought... why do i always put the piano in the ballroom? it would makes sense for there to be a music room.
the butler would have his own office of sorts, though i imagine it would be small and off the kitchen. thinking 'remains of the day'. anyway. great job. still super impressed.

maybe the schoolroom's on the first floor? seems unlikely. Definitely a music room somewhere, I like that. There's also sometimes a "breakfast room," like a smaller informal dining room. Although there are a lot of von Trapps for that to work.

how about a trophy room... somewhere he can show off all his nautical stuff and other treasures from around the world? just thinking as we go here...

Food For Thought:
In the play, at the beginning of the balcony scene when Maria has come out onto the terrace, the directions say she pauses at the top of the steps and looks to her left as she hears the children's laughter. I've always wondered where they are (presumably in the house, as it is dark), and assumed they were perhaps having supper in a small dining/breakfast room near the kitchen on that side. Or perhaps the room I have labelled the '?library' is a music room, and they are in there (although the Captain banned music). Any ideas?
Anne, yes the kids need a schoolroom, so I think that definitely needs to go somewhere, probably 'out of the way' upstairs. With the bedrooms on the plan, I have tried to stick with what we can be sure about from the film, but I would think a schoolroom could be squeezed in up there - it's such fun filling in the blanks!
Don't forget there is another floor above, only half the height of the lower ones, so it is most likely to be where the servants sleep. The ante-room between the gallery and the balcony: tricky one this! Any suggestions?

This is so much fun, Indigoblue:-) Thanks for your great work. I watched SOM a couple of days ago to cheer up myself during my morning commuting and I couldn't stop thinking of your plan. I was wondering if Maria's room wasn't situated in a corner of the house. As if, after the "My favourite things/You are many things, Fraulein" scene, I could see a windows that is opening onto the side of the villa.
As for the room between the balcony and the gallery, what about a ladies drawing room, with magnificent view on the lake?

You're quite right, Tranquillity! I rewatched the film last week as I hadn't quite grasped from which bedroom door Maria emerges when she decides to return to the abbey. It is actually the door at the far end of the corridor, on the left hand side (top left bedroom in my upstairs plan), so your are right, because this room is indeed on the corner overlooking the lake. Her bathroom is on the side of the bedroom without windows. It occurred to me that, if the guest bedrooms are also on this side, it would have made it easy for Elsa to slip into Maria's bedroom without being seen when she wanted to confront her about the Captain.
I agree about the room between the gallery and the balcony, it would have had a lovely view, sunshine and light. I thought it could also have been used for someone invalided, to sit in the warmth, looking at the lake.

The spare room you have on the first floor would be most likely to house some sort of a cloak room, in which to keep outerwear. I doubt Franz would be carrying coats, hats, etc. from visitors and dumping them on the Captain's bed. Your floor plan is marvelous!
