It's been too long. The upper floor is all muddled up, sorry.
Was it nice to be at the Villa? At first yes, but then it almost ruined our trip to Salzburg, since the "hotel" seems to be run by money greedy people who don't care if you have a nice experience. You need to be lucky, when booking a room there and we were not.
By the time I took these pictures, hubby was arguing with the "hotel" owners if we had a right to a running shower in our room (Edelweiss Suite). We had booked 2 nights (paid up front), but the first night we arrived the shower didn't drain and was also leaking onto the hardwood floor.
because we didn't want to be slammed with insurance issues (water damage in an old villa!) i had to send an email to the people running the hotel at 10pm, since there isn't anyone at the premises and you are left to your own devices. Next morning (no shower) we flagged it again (an employee shows up at 8am) and went our merry way as we were going on our Sound of Music bike trip; came back to rest before dinner and our experience turned sour. They had fixed the drain, but the shower still leaked badly. An employee was still at the premise and I went to ask about the shower. She couldn't do anything about it. Called her employers, they offered breakfast but not the option to maybe use a shower from a different room (since the villa was no where near booked solid). They did not agree that paying 190 Euros a night would mean one could count on an operating shower. Lots of arguing, calling our insurances and credit card company, but then we left and booked into a different hotel. Knowing we won't be getting any of our money back.
To top it off, the lady said verbatim: "You should have checked out in the morning and we would have refunded you the second night". Nice one.
It took me a while to get out of my disappointed mood, but luckily the Strudel I had for dinner helped. And the rainy pictures of TSOM scenes in Salzburg at night did, too.
Is it worth it to stay at the actual Villa Trap in Salzburg, a glorified AirB&B? NO, absolutely not.
Next time, we'll stay at Hotel Leopoldskron, the film Villa Trapp. Where they know what hospitality is will treat you like a guest, not a cash cow.

Thanks for these - so sorry to hear about your disappointing stay, though.

These are fabulous chezlui. Thank you for sharing! What a bummer that you had such a terrible experience with your stay though.

Youโre welcome! We can almost laugh about it now. It makes for an extra story about our stay in Salzburg. And luckily, my family helped me out of the funk and was happy to let me take of them.

indigoblue have you ever done a layout of the entire grounds? Do they have a boat dock, do they have stables (insert riding crop joke here), how much of their land is gardens, etc. Apologies if you have and it is somewhere obvious. If you haven't, any chance you would?

The only layout of the grounds I have done is the in the initial floor plan of the house I posted at the beginning of this thread (Page 1), because that included all that I could identify from looking at screencaps. So it includes the lane and courtyard at the entrance of the house, the Pegasus Landing by the lake, the gazebo, and the gardens you can see behind Maria when she returns to the villa.
Any more, I think, would require some imagination - and why not?! I tried at one point to look at photos of the Leopoldskron (?) house which was used to film the lakeside scenes, but I realised that around the sides of the house it did not correspond well with what we see,so I stopped there. Chezlui used a much more sophisticated method of doing plans than me - you could have fun putting in all sorts of interesting things, even trysting places for our favourite couple! Regrettably things are busy busy for me at present, so I can't see it happening at this end,'cos it takes a while to do - sorry.

No stress, Indigo! I know things are hectic for all of us at the moment. I love that you included the grounds that we see in the film in your floor plans. I was wondering what else is out there that we don't see. I don't really have the creative abilities to put this together though, so I was hoping someone else had. I'm not even sure what a villa at this time would include. Stables seems likely? Would there be more gardens? How much of the lake shoreline belongs to the Von Trapps? All of these kind of questions...fun to think about!

I always thought a boathouse and jetty were missing from the film, as the boat is just moored below the steps of the Pegasus Landing most of the time when we see any views of the lake - it would need a boathouse to be secure. And a jetty would be such a romantic place for the two to meet (which I wrote about in my short fic Rippled Moon on FanFiction.net). Stables, yes, farm buildings maybe as many large houses had land to support the house and family, woodland too, maybe its own chapel, somewhere to swim from on the lake? The possibilities are endless!

Something else I always thought would be right for the villa is an indoor riding area; I have a secret feeling/fantasy that Georg is an expert rider (think of the white Lippizaners of the Spanish Riding school in Vienna)...somehow I can see him on horseback...or is that just my imagination running away with me?!

Funny, I was JUST thinking about Georg as a rider (horses are making a feature in one of my stories) - my vote is a resounding YES to riding but a no to dressage (a la Spanish Riding School). I just feel dressage is too... I don't know, exhibitionist/performance heavy for someone like our Captain. Maybe show hunting/jumping...
But absolutely, Georg hits me as a swoonworthy horse-riding kind of man. Though I wonder if riding would be included in his rather draconion approach to education for the children (pre-Maria).

I don't really know how I missed this amazing thread which has left me in awe of reverendcaptain and chezlui and of course indigoblue (I can picture that jetty!) I always write in a suite for our Captain. As for you, laurynvi, I have two words: riding crop. (I'm going off to read that chapter right now!)

augiesannie - now, I have to clarify, does the riding crop signify that you agree he is indeed a riding man, or suggesting that the floor plans should perhaps include a room with a collection of such accessories? ๐

I have to think about whether my Georg would even require the latter (and whether any of these brilliant floor plans can accommodate it. "Frau Schmidt, you'll simply have to find another sewing room. This space is spoken for."

HAHA. ... Can you just imagine Franz, trying to describe such a room when his Nazi masters interrogate him about the layout of Von Trapp villa?

Do you think it is possible that any of the staff lived in buildings on the property, but not in the house? The garage we see when Maria arrives looks to have multiple doors, and plenty of space above for rooms/apartments. I wonder if this was done at the time? Attachments:

I spent a happy hour or two this week watching TSOM to try to sort out the floor plans. The result is below, although some of it does not quite add up, so any suggestions are welcome!
