I'd love to help but I'm not on either of those platforms---only facebook. Maybe sharing one of the questions that led to a multi-page discussion or analysis, with a link here? I don't think long form is outmoded, but it does take more time. I think it allows a more thoughtful and thought-provoking discussion.

I too believe a link would be helpful in getting more traffic on this forum. I may not say much but I think it’s a wonderful site and the hard work is very much appreciated

been quiet around here lately. I know I've had times when I'm just too busy to get here. As mentioned earlier, I've been in touch with people who are very active in the Insta and Twitter fandoms, trying to understand how to make connections. How to get people to come over here, I guess, but also generating new ideas or thoughts for us (or for fics!) They all think that it's great to have this place for deeper more detailed discussions, but you can't just post there to get people here, you have to have a "hook," which is probably to post some of the more provocative and interesting questions, or where we have done delicious microanalysis. And only a few good examples. So I'm going to dig around in here to see what I think might tickle someone's fancy. IDK, maybe in the long run we will learn that this kind of "long form" place is outmoded, but I'm not giving up on it yet. Tagging folks who have been here in the last two months and looking for any advice about how to make connections to these other platforms: indigoblue , Chris&Byng , galan , schnitzelwithnoodles , sandra , tennegau , thoughts-of-joy-dreams-of-love , josephine , gadsauntie , dontevenknowher , MeltIntoSpring , unfollowthesun , utility_singer , clarinetjamie , Silver-White-Winters , reverendcaptain , mariarainers , ro2022 , lemacd , bluesatinsashes , itsdayandnight , proboard . I haven't been active on this board in 7 (!!) years, but I rewatched TSOM recently and have a couple fic ideas circulating in my head now, so that's why I've been poking around here again lol. Anyway, hello to everyone! I don't have any connection to the TSOM fandom on Twitter or Insta, but maybe it would be useful to crosspost work on Archive of our Own (AO3)? AO3 is steadily becoming a more popular fanfiction site than ff.net, though the TSOM catalogue on there is still fairly small. But for newer fic readers/writers who are probably more likely to check out AO3 first, it might help to post stories there and mention that they were inspired by the Proboards. Unlike ff.net, AO3 actually allows links to other websites, too! From my personal experience, I still use ff.net, but I do prefer AO3 now because there are no ads and it's just generally easier to navigate. Plus, ff.net doesn't seem to be as well-maintained, so I think there are some concerns about its lifespan. That's part of why I decided to publish all my works on both websites. Here's information about how to make an account if anyone is interested : archiveofourown.org/faq/invitations

I thought it would be easiest if people just posted when they felt like it - especially if no-one else had that day! To kick things off, and as it has just turned 1 June here in the UK, here is my first offering: the great bells of Salzburg Cathedral, which Maria would have known well: www.youtube.com/watch?v=puC-E4f9keM (It takes at least a minute for all the bells to ring out) And if you want to see the bells actually ringing in the cathedral loft, see here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=0t7YCQvRYsAI will mention that it takes about a minute or two for the bells to swing high enough to ring - enjoy this fabulous sound! Wow. Cool. I can't believe the richness of the sound and the length of the ringing! I bet you could hear this for miles! It's a far cry from most church bells where I am that just chime on the hour.

Ok - here it is! This is my first story OUTSIDE of the story that has consumed my life for almost 2 years now (sheesh, and we haven't even made it to the puppet show yet LOL). I just posted chapter 27 of that baby yesterday, so here's this little ditty...it's written differently than my regular spiel. Good thing I don't have an editor, or it would never be posted anywhere. Initially, I posted it here, but it seemed so long and obnoxious (LOL), so here's the link to the story: www.fanfiction.net/s/14239864/1/On-the-StairsGreat story!! It is hard to get inside Georg's head, but you did it beautifully, touching on all of the emotional highlights of the film. The steps theme woven in was lovely. I especially liked that Maria was a high priestess on an altar as she looked down on him during The Apology. I also liked that she stitched his shattered heart back together - a good analogy for Maria who is such a talented seamstress. Agathe walking Maria down the aisle is brilliant! It allows for Agathe to be part of the celebration, and also allows Maria to not truly be alone. Well done!

That’s exactly what I had in mind, but then I got off track, kind of, by finding the discussions of whether E&G were ever intimate, and whether M&G waited until marriage, questions that I find fascinating (and that didn’t go on for 16 pages). But then I rethought it: those might be topics that upset an insta crowd. Maybe need something a little more unicorn and rainbow-y. If anyone has any suggestions about what questions might draw an audience without upsetting them, let me know!

I really enjoyed this documentary involving the grown-up kids, which was made a few years ago for British TV. They revisit Salzburg and reflect on making the film and life afterwards, with lots of family film clips which show many of the scenes we know so well, but from a different viewpoint. Many of their observations are new and insightful, so I thought you'd enjoy it too! www.youtube.com/watch?v=h83z2EXljgAOMG, Indigo, this is a gold mine! I wish I could watch the whole movie and stop after every scene and hear the kids' commentary. I especially liked that they tried to have the kids recreate the do-re-mi scenes. The steps in the garden had me laughing out loud. I didn't know that Marta had dentures - I thought she spoke with a lisp. I didn't know that Marta and Gretl's moms were in competition to get their darling the most time in the spotlight. That surprised me. I loved the part when Liesl said the crew gave her a standing ovation after she finished 16 going on 17 with a sprained ankle. I've never like the "Weeeee!" ending of that scene. Though, if it is more of a "I can't believe I just made it through a whole day of dancing on a hurt ankle and we didn't have to postpone the shoot" kind of a weeeee, maybe I like it better. I wish JA and CP had been part of the trip and commentary. That would have been icing on the cake.

I such a dinosaur tech wise, so I'm no help at all trying to get people over from other platforms. I've never been on most of them. Though, I have heard from people on this board and on ff.net that other platforms are not always as welcoming and nonjudgmental as I find this one to be. Maybe that is something to bring up? That people never try to out do each other here or never really have anything negative to say about anyone's comments or questions. I find when I am speaking to younger people phrase "safe space" often comes up. I find this forum to be a safe space to discuss TSOM. Maybe this is appealing?

I really wanted to have a story ready, or at least have something interesting to contribute for the June anniversary celebration. But the end of the school year was brutal and then I have been away on vacation, so I don't have anything put together. Maybe by the end of the summer I can figure something out. Until then, I am loving everyone else's contributions!! Thank you for posting them!

Here's another really interesting one, again for British TV, with a lot of new material. The amusing Sue Perkins (a self-confessed SOM fan) tries to find out why it has such a lasting legacy. There is a lot of fascinating stuff in here, with clips from the real family films, interviews with Austrians, some funny moments at Sing-a-longs, and following the family route to the US. www.youtube.com/watch?v=tMVXS_xNIz0 Something for you to enjoy with your cup of coffee! Another gem, Indigo! These are a few of my favorite things: - I found the host's dry humor very entertaining. I liked that it started at a sing-a-long. Those are such fun! - I'm glad Nicholas Hammond (Friedrich) is such an ambassador to the film. He always seems to say the right thing. I find him very likeable. - It's surprising to me that Austrians have not come to embrace TSOM. Think of the tourism it has brought them - that alone should be enough to overlook the historical inaccuracies. I understand their desire to be viewed as never having been on the same side as the Nazis. Though, the film doesn't really show general public as being supportive does it? If anything, it shows a national hero as doing anything to oppose the Nazis, which I would think, everyone would love. - It was interesting that in real life, Maria was actually the cold one, never having been loved, and Georg was the gentle one. They would have had to recast the film if they went at it this way. I can't see the loving CP coaxing the surly JA out of her shell. It was sweet to hear that hugs and kisses from the little ones meant so much to real life Maria who had never had any affection. - Movie Georg makes a point of saying that his children don't sing in public. It is interesting that in real life, that is their career both in Europe and the US. Though, he himself was in the background, he clearly didn't oppose this idea, even before they needed the money. I wonder why they made movie Georg so against it. - Maria and Father Wasner wrote a love song together?!? - I loved hearing from the surviving children! 97 year old Maria was so fabulous still playing her accordion! - All of the kids played instruments in real life. I like that. Though, claiming that 7 children could learn to sing and play instruments in a matter of weeks would have been overkill in the film. - There was a really interesting line in there about research killing the story. It does starts to cast a little shadow on the story when you learn the harsh truths about the family being forced by Maria to continue singing when they really didn't want to. Many of them didn't marry because Maria had them scared of boys. Being ultra religious, it is not surprising to me that Maria wanted them to go to the convent. That was normal in earlier generations of my family as well, but if after spending time at the convent, you decided that it was not your calling, you were supposed to get married and have many children. It is surprising to me that Maria did not raise her girls that same way. The kids seemed almost afraid of their mom, even though she has been gone for many years at this point, and they themselves are elderly people - no longer little kids that can be pushed around by their parent. - Did Rosemarie have a menorah necklace on? They just showed it for a second. Maybe all of those years of daily mass and trips to the convent pushed her away from Catholicism all together? - I'm glad the play was so well received by the Austrian audience in the end.

Also - I was just thinking that if you want someone on Instagram to advertise this forum, Instagram is such an image-based platform that the best way would be to make a graphic that the user can share. The graphic could just give a little overview of what the forum is all about, how to join, maybe some short member testimonials? If needed, it could be multiple slides. The important thing is that it's aesthetically pleasing because it'll be on Instagram lol. Canva is the go-to website for making social media graphics because it's free and pretty easy to use. It even has templates specifically sized to be used as Instagram Posts or Stories. Posts are what stay on a user's main feed and never go away unless the user decides to delete it. Stories, on the other hand, disappear after 24 hours. So it just depends on what whoever you're talking to, augiesannie, wants to do. It could even be reused on Twitter, since Tweets with an image will be more likely to catch the eye. Not sure I'm the best person to make a graphic because I haven't been around at all for the better part of a decade haha, but I'd be happy to give help/advice!

Apologies for triple-posting in this thread haha... I wasn't planning to write anything for the 10th anniversary, but this idea fell on me while I was trying to sleep the other night and I got up and hand-wrote most of it at like 3 am. It's a bit out of my comfort zone because it's a letter from Georg's POV, but let me know what y'all think! www.fanfiction.net/s/14248029/1/Ten-Years-Gone Anyway, I feel like I should do a more formal reintroduction if I'm going to post fanfiction again. Hi, I'm thoughts-of-joy-dreams-of-love; my username references a lyric from Andrew Lloyd-Webber's The Phantom of the Opera. I first joined this forum when I was just a 15-year-old theatre kid. I wasn't the most active author or poster, and I don't still love everything I wrote back then haha, but I made some good memories and it was nice to receive encouragement as a young writer! Now, I'm 24 and work in publishing full time (corporate not fiction, so nothing too interesting lol), but I miss the creativity and fun of fanfic, so I'm trying to write more often. I can't promise I'll be super active on here in the future, but the 10th anniversary definitely stirred up some nostalgia for me lol, and this really is a special forum. It's good to be back for however long my muse stays on TSOM

I have always thought her dress was the prettiest wedding dress I've ever seen! It is interesting to know what all goes into making a dress like this - I know so little about sewing.. Does anyone know what happened to the dress from the movie? I hope it's in a museum somewhere.

What amazing scenery! I wonder if they shied away from using aerial footage of this cathedral in the film because it would have made it more obvious that they weren't really at the abbey (and they had to be at the abbey in movie universe because we see Maria get ready and the sisters at the back of the church). Though most people (except micro analyzers like everyone on this forum) would have just been so entranced by the spectacular view of the cathedral and town that they wouldn't have noticed that it didn't match up with the shots of Salzburg from the beginning. Where are you finding all of these clips, Indigo? I have never seen any of them and I search for SOM stuff on YouTube often. Great finds!

Also Googling images of SOM-related stuff, then surfing awhile will get you into a lovely rabbithole of your favourite subject - the web is such an amazing thing. Looking forward to your finds!

Just to pick out one of many interesting thoughts here, it's a good question why they made Georg so opposed to his children singing in public? (Especially since he apparently was OK with their singing at the party). Maybe it's partly an aristocratic snob thing. Or maybe it's to make the last minute subterfuge with Zeller - "we're not escaping! We're going to sing at the festival!" - especially notable since it turns Georg's refusal on its head and becomes their redemption.

Thanks thoughts-of-joy-dreams-of-love! Based on my conversations with some of the big TSOM names on Insta, who do seem to know about us, I set up an Insta for myself and am going to develop some posts that tickle people's interest in longer conversations. (My first thought was, the poll on whether E&G ever did the deed, but that might not send the right message). I do know that we need images for those posts but I hadn't thought about a graphic like the above. Sigh another new skill to learn ... maybe I will solicit some testimonials? for starters. Here is the link to my new Insta: www.instagram.com/

Also - I was just thinking that if you want someone on Instagram to advertise this forum, Instagram is such an image-based platform that the best way would be to make a graphic that the user can share. The graphic could just give a little overview of what the forum is all about, how to join, maybe some short member testimonials? If needed, it could be multiple slides. been quiet around here lately. I was just thinking about this, actually. If you're on Twitter, check out the account Reba Madness. That might give you some ideas. On a quick side note, I will be making a post in the general boards section soon. So stay tuned!

I originally was going to play with Twitter too, but for various reasons that has proved more complicated for me. Even Instagram I am doing much more slowly than I wanted because life things are getting in the way. Haven't given up though!

If the goal of the account is to be a sort of "official" promotional account for the forum, can I suggest changing the username to "soundofmusic_fics" or something like that? I'd also recommend switching the settings from private to public so people can see posts without having to follow it first. Of course, if you plan to use it as more of a personal account, feel free to ignore me lol.
