They did a live TV version of 'On Golden Pond' in 2001. It's available (split into parts on Youtube) and was finally released on DVD in Australia last year. Available here or here if you want to buy it (overseas shipping). It's awesome, especially if you love TSOM as much as we do.

Watching On Golden Pond with those two, it was as if I was watching Georg and Maria 40 years on. ...And of course, you get a great view of That Kiss which was hidden in the dark in the gazebo! Georg and Maria/Ethel and Norman/Chris and Julie, whichever you prefer...

They did the live presentation of "On Golden Pond" for TV in 2001. They've also made other appearances either together (several symphony performances, along with Charlotte Church, years ago) or for one another (presenting/speaking at award shows or other things honoring the other).

I want more relationship stuff so desperately that I repeatedly rewind the moment where they clasp hands during the last performance song!

Oh, honey, that's why they fade to black after that song. If they showed more kissing they'd have had to change the rating. Reading through and bringing up old stuff I’m sorry. But I’d read somewhere that back in the day a Kiss has to be broken after 3 seconds on screen or it indeed affected the rating. Not sure if that’s true or not but I did count down on both kisses and he does break at 3 seconds in each. I would have much preferred longer as well

We love bringing up old stuff so no I'm sorry.
Especially if it's more than 3 seconds long.

Timing kisses gives me the perfect excuse to watch the gazebo scene today! Not that I don't trust you ANeedlePullingThread, but I should probably verify for myself. You know, for scientific purposes.

3 seconds. confirmed. for science.
Does anyone else think he wanted to keep kissing her neck more than he wanted her to sing Something Good?

3 seconds. confirmed. for science. Does anyone else think he wanted to keep kissing her neck more than he wanted her to sing Something Good? Oh most certainly yes. I want to think there were practice sessions to get it just right. I must watch that scene about 4 times a day for Scientific purposes as well. When I get up my nerve, and some coherent thoughts, I want to write a small one shot extending that Gazebo kiss

Practice sessions! Yes! Here's how they'd go... "Do you want to practice our kissing scene to make sure we stay within the 3 second time limit for our rating?" "Sure" (10 minute long passionate kiss happens) "Oops, I don't think we made it. Let's try again."

The orangey picture of them at the very top of this page above the bar shows them chortling as they practice...again and again...

I was just thinking about the contrast of the two major gazebo kisses. The first kiss, Maria is still kind of standing sideways and Georg uses his hand to guide her into a gentle kiss. Lovely! But pretty different from the kiss moments later after Something Good, where they have their arms around each other with their bodies pressed together and she is going in for the kiss just as much as he is. It is interesting watching the body language changes from too shy to look each other in the eyes, to hurting by hopeful, to realization of shared love, to gently testing the waters, to I can't even stop kissing you long enough to say what I want to say. It seems like some pretty major leaps were taken in a few minutes time. It makes me wonder how they managed to keep passion under control until the wedding night!

Whoa, do you think they didn't wait?? Scenario please! Went back to one of their rooms after the gazebo? Midnight rendezvous after their chaperone (Max?) went to sleep?
With her being a postulant, I would imagine this kind of mortal sin would have been avoided at all cost. Though, the temptation would be there. I wonder which one of them ended up being the voice of reason when things started going too far. Georg trying to make sure they don't do something Maria will later regret (because I don't think he would regret it)? or Maria remembering her morals before it was too late?

Many have the overall story line happening differently, or the characters personalities being different than what we have been shown in the film. Which is the point of fanfiction really, to be able to be creative and to make these characters into whatever you want them to be. I was just thinking, going strictly by what we know of Georg and Maria from the movie, do people think they didn't wait.

We need a poll: Did they wait, or didn't they?
Problem is, I can't remember where the poll facility is!

We do need a poll. It would be interesting how many people think they waited or didn't wait. I don't know where the poll facility is either. I believe that they waited, but the wedding was very soon. Georg was too disciplined and polished for behaving out of limits and Maria was too moral. But if somebody would lose control, I think it would have been Maria...

So I was thinking about the length and timing of gazebo kisses today...we already talked about how the first kiss is only 3 seconds, but that actually seems pretty long to me considering that he could have just brushed her lips and then pulled back to make sure she reciprocated his feelings. I think he knows she does at this point, but he still needs to gauge how fast to take the affection. I like the slow (and somewhat long) first kiss, followed by him knowing not to go in for kiss number 2 on the lips right away. The forehead kissing and gentle hugs are what she needs to feel confident. He's considerate of her being innocent and overwhelmed, but not patronizing. I, of course, wanted more kissing in this movie, but I like how slow they started out.

Yes, it's all totally luscious... To me, that's the essence of this scene, how he doesn't rush things. And in doing so, he allows her all the time in the world to back away if she isn't comfortable. Very considerate, and how sensible - not least because it would be very embarrassing if he had guessed her wrong!
But picture now them rehearsing this scene and all those different kisses, discussing what was appropriate, practising all those little subtleties: "No, not like this....like THIS!" "Mmm, a bit more of that"..."Cuddle me a bit longer..."
I'm amazed they weren't an item after all that (which presumably they rehearsed well before filming the movie?)

I like the way he takes her chin for the first kiss, like, someone has to be in charge here and it's got to be me I guess. I think his gentle kisses on eyelids, forehead, whatever, reflect his relief and tender feelings for her. I just love the way she goes in for that second kiss. (She may have had prior experience, just sayin'). I love this thread so much I want to kiss it.

It's that slight hesitation he makes just before their lips touch, as if to ask "please let me know if I have misjudged what is going on between us..but I just can't help myself..."
That's what makes me go all gooey!

i’m currently writing the last chapter (or maybe not the last chapter) of my georg centric story, and i’ve watched this scene a million times to keep it accurate, but the kissing (or lack thereof) really bugs me.
this is my favourite scene of the entire film as i’m an absolute sucker for romance. i feel like the lighting makes the scene extra romantic - it feels so private, and the way the light shines in their eyes makes me want to squeal; but it realllllly ruins things too. you can barely see anything.
i also feel like it’s (one of) the most unrealistic scene of the film (yes, even with all that dancing and singing). imagine having someone look at you half as adoringly as maria looks at georg when you confess your feelings and only going in to kiss them once. ONCE. the chin grabbing is super romantic and i agree, it feels like the right length, but ONCE. the cheek/forehead kisses are sweet and have that almost disbelief that he’s finally allowed to do that, but surely he’d want to kiss her again after all that longing? i hope they never remake this film, but it could definitely have benefited from the more lax film pda rules of 2020 haha
idk if anyone here has read my story, and if you have, like that i tried to keep it accurate, but i’m seriously considering adding an extra kiss or ten to my story!

scullypout I definitely wanted more kisses in the gazebo too! I think he would have kissed her again if she hadn't started singing. I wanted them to get rid of Something Good and add more gentle lovely kissing. BTW, is your name in reference to Scully from the X-files?
