I think you are right.
And also maybe there is something of the same allusion to Maria having to be prepared for work in the house, so not wearing long sleeves (in the same way that white gloves 'show' that you are not in the market for manual work?) Except both Frau Schmidt and Franz wear long sleeves, so maybe that one doesn't hold water!

Do we ever see Georg with a drink in his hand at the party? He drinks in many other scenes, but I don't think this one. Maybe he feels comfortable soaking himself in champagne at Elsa's Vienna parties, but needs to keep his wits about him when the party is at his house? Especially with the likes of Zeller there? Interestingly, he drinks after the puppet show but his guests don't.

I should think after his encounter with Maria and with Elsa breathing down his neck, he needed a drink!

while re-watching the scene I clearly see what you say: men on one side, women on the other; and both seem to come from a room at the back of the stairs, so my vote is that they enabled a toilet for each sex in each wing of the house, and that's all. And by the way you can see that some lean over the banisters like if they were gossiping, it seems like an absolutely perfect atmosphere of a party to me. Then I think it is remarkable to highlight the presentation of Her Zeller and with what subtlety looks we already notice the misgivings of the Captain and how he sees him from afar while Her Zeller despises the flag -perhaps it is not noticeable at first but the editing here is beautiful, there are happening many things in the background much more important than what the eye can see (the reception). I took notice of this too on my millionth rewatch. And also his reaction to Zeller being there in general, and it is really amusing to me that he can't even fake a smile for this man like he truly hates him. Cause his reaction to greeting Zeller vs. everyone else amuses me/
It gives Gordon Ramsay with kids vs. with adults type of meme.

You have to wonder too, if the 'other guy' who Zeller goes to chat with about the Von Trapp flag, having already arrived at the party, has ALREADY made Georg angry. Zeller showing up is just really bad icing on the cake. You probably can bet money on the fact that Georg didn't invite them...and yet, here they are.

You think they crashed the party? I assumed they were on Elsa's guest list (that Georg did not approve), and were there because they were important people in Salzburg. Actually, when I was very young I thought an announcement went out that there was a party and anyone could just show up. This was the only way I could rationalize Zeller being at the party. Him crashing is a new angle though. He wouldn't miss an opportunity to try to intimidate Georg, so he would want to be there if Georg was throwing a party. Plus, he was important enough that they couldn't refuse him if he just showed up uninvited.

I bet he was invited - most likely Elsa's doing (hence the "oh Georg, he's just a boyyy") - the more I think about it, when Elsa throws the party idea into the mix after Georg sings, she does say "it's high time she met all his friends in Salzburg". This would suggest there's a list of people she wants to meet, and maybe she threw in some extras!
