ok, we did this for G and it was rather fun. so here is a backstory idea that i wonder if anyone has considered and if so, please share if you wish.
depending on her backstory, of course, have you ever considered giving maria a childhood sweetheart/boyfriend... one that probably broke her heart but once she meets captain hot stuff was clearly never the one, and never would be the one.
i am considering the possibility for my story... not like she'll run into him on the street or anything, just a once bitten twice shy kind of thing, maybe? could be anything. i'd be interested to hear if anyone has ideas. or even if you think the idea is gross.

oh, and if anyone knows a fanfic that already suggested this, i'd love to read it. if it's finished. and sorta decent enough to read.

I don't think I've ever seen a story with her having a childhood sweetheart. It is an interesting idea, though. It would certainly explain why she's so quick to lie for Liesl climbing up the trellis.

She's too attractive NOT to have had any attention; how old is she meant to be? 27/28? (I think in real life then), so including a year as a postulant, to get to 25 or so without any interest takes some doing!

No, in the movie I suspect she is supposed to be 22/23 (though Julie was 26 when filming); IRL Maria was 22 when they married.

I think she could have had a relatively innocent schoolgirl/schoolboy crush or two -- she's so sweet, you could see them holding hands or an innocent kiss or two - but she somehow never took the plunge into anything bigger. But lemacd I think you could easily also construct a story where she does become more seriously involved with someone who breaks her heart. It would make a lot of sense and explain a lot of things. I think sometimes fanfics overdo it when they say that was her very first kiss.

the idea i have stewing is that there was a boy that started to show her some interest and she was extremely flattered that someone like him (maybe he's from a wealthy family, maybe he's popular) would consider her pretty or desirable. actually, my original thought was that he suddenly asked to walk her home, carry her books... and, well, all the other girls have boys carrying their books and she's flattered. anyway... on the way he wants a kiss, she goes along until it is clear he isn't really interested in her, just kissing. when she won't give him what he wants, he says things to her that are not nice, completely undermine any self esteem she gained when he carried her books... i think you get the point. he's a jerk and makes her feel like a complete fool. he made her feel that way, but she completely blames herself for not guarding her heart. this sprung (or maybe it was cultivated) from the thread about why maria went to the convent and from being inspired by WG, specifically thoughts as to why she didn't consider love, husband and children as an option for herself.
it's kind of depressing, actually. sorry if i bummed y'all out.

it's not a bummer-out, because it is part of the broken road, you know, the one that's going to lead her to G, right?
interesting - there might be some echoes of this boy in how she might see G. I always think of him as charming, successful, rich, handsome - just another boy who could break her heart. But then again, he's also brooding and difficult and demanding and brokenhearted. So there's that.

now I really can't wait to read it. Because if WG taught me one thing, it's that it's one thing to have the idea, and quite another to make it come to life with plot, characterization, and dialogue.

I'm wondering why Maria never went and look for Liesl on her first night. She saw her walk away and I'm sure she noticed Liesl not being there when she put the children to bed.... Was she to busy with the Captain? Did it take that much time to tell her all the rules?
Maybe Maria wanted to give her some trust. Because Liesl told her, she didn't need a gouverness.

it could have been a power move by maria, to gain trust, etc. but remember, maria sneaked off from the abbey and went mountain climbing so she probably understand that need to sneak away. i'm sure she planned to speak to liesl about it at some point. rules were never maria's specialty.

Maria's power! Yup she did it also. But wouldn't she be worried because she was with Rolf?

well, no i don't think so. i mean, she should be. but maria is playing it cool. she's thinking "what would the captain do?" and once she's figure that out, she does the opposite. she probably sees the whole thing for what it is, a crush. if she were to go all "i didn't see you anywhere after dinner!" on her, well... liesl would be running into rolf's arms.

Haha you girls are funny. But very right.
I remember my parents told me I could go out with my friends in the weekend and said to me that they couldn’t tell me not to smoke because they did (at the time, they both quit, luckily) Because I was aloud to go out, I would rather stay home with my friends and never tried a cigarette in my life. My parents were very clever, or I was a well behaved teenager.
I have another option about Maria. Maybe she had to sit with the Captain all evening, Listening to his rules and she was so overwhelmed by his presence, Face, hands, eyes….drooilng…she totally forgot about the oldest child…..

ok. let's hope i still remember in about 6 years. We'll still be here to remind you, 50,000 posts and counting. From the Fantastiks: "why would the kids put beans in their ears? no one can hear with beans in their ears. after a while, the reason appears they did it 'cause you said no."

I have a backstory question about our girl...figured here's probably the best place to post it. Where did the 'uncle' backstory that EVERYONE uses actually come from? From what I've heard about the real Maria she went into foster care, but I also remember reading something where she mentions an uncle. Now, I don't know if that was just what she called her foster carer or whether they were actually related. We don't really have a lot of backstory as far as the film goes either. Thoughts??

I believe that the foster care placement was with her uncle. I know in the US when children are removed from their biological parents, the foster care system first tries to find relatives to take them in.

Yes I understood that it was a relative but often in the RL story he's referred to as a guardian so I often use that if the matter comes up briefly in my stories. I gave used both. I'm not sure, though, why we make him a farmer...
