haven't looked through the rest of this thread, but I noticed that when Brigitta says, "your face is all red" to Maria, Maria and Georg are still looking into each other's eyes, and she gives an almost-but-not-quite little smile, and that is when he smiles at her.
It isn't until Elsa enters and speaks that they break their gaze. but you all probably have noticed that already.

I watched a YouTube clip tonight and focused on the children when Georg cuts in on Kurt and Maria. Their expressions are priceless! Especially Brigitta's(she notices everything).
But what I was coming here to post was, just out of curiosity, I viewed other performances of the Laendler on You tube and was once again blown away by how effortless and magical Chris and Julie's version is. No disrespect to other performers but there's just nothing that comes close to what Christopher and Julie did on-screen.

ugh, I remember changing Cinderella's waltz into this dance in our play. bwahahah I agree with tantekj. Chris and Julie's performance is just magical and perfect that you can't see any other version of it. just want to share my Twitter's header pic <3 made by another friend of mine. (since it's from the Laendler scene)

Magical is a wonderful word to use for their pairing in this movie. Not just their dance is effortless and magical, either. Every scene they have together is that way. Maybe that is why it so easy to overanalyze everything----the old saying about peeling an onion and seeing how deep the layers go seems to apply here. Every time you look, there is something more. I mean, even at the top of this page, I noted that when they stop dancing, G smiles in response to M smiling at him; and only this time (well, six times) watching again this morning, did I notice her eyes just light up and smile at him before her mouth does.
Magical.

I think it is magical because they are, simply, complete together, as one, and it's utterly beguiling to watch it.
More popcorn, anyone?

Oh undoubtably the wine. Absolutely!
But in actual fact, the other essentials are coke and lots of ice cubes (which has NOTHING to do with your story utility, really it doesn't - stop laughing, it is still the carry over of pregnancy cravings 6 months later - I went off apples and got into ice cubes when I fell pregnant. Totally weird I know).

Where does Maria come from when the children are watching the guests dance? And what was she doing?
I ask because I’m currently writing the party for chapter 7 of J&B and I somehow need to know what she might be doing or where she came from….. Any idea’s?

I've thought about this several times: if you look at the floor plans, it would seem she comes in from the garden and through the gap in the hedge (presumably to avoid having to walk through the partygoers). I assume she has been upstairs sorting things out, before coming down to get the kids ready for 'So Long, Farewell'. But exactly what she was doing is actually anybody's guess - ideas, anyone?

i just always thought that since she wasn't really a guest, she made herself scarce until it was time to fetch the children. i always thought that was what she was going to do before she was talked into teaching kurt how to dance and then, well... you know. i am sure there are many delicious ideas for where she was before that scene... nothing springs to mind, you know. maybe putting on her new dress. or watching the party from a secret hiding spot inside the house... you know, watching the captain be so captain-y in his uniform. or watching elsa in her gown and wondering what it would be like to wear something like that.
wow, my mind sprung. fun to think about...

I always wondered about that, the way she came in from the other side of the patio.

I always wondered about that, the way she came in from the other side of the patio. I've always assumed that the passageway (with the hedge-like sides) led around to the front of the villa and thats why they leave that way to get back tot he main entrance to perform so long, farewell. As to what Maria was doing out the front beforehand, no idea. Maybe I can come up with one sometime.

Maybe changing her dress could work. I also have something 'delicious' in mind. Not sure if it will work.
Keep the ideas flowing.

I can't help thinking that, while the kids were on the terrace watching the dancing, Maria must have spent some time leaning over the bannister of the upstairs gallery, just watching...it would all have been so foreign to her.

Oh, I loveo this. I think I've written about it a time or two - the way she might stay in the shadows, watching him in all his unbearable handsomeness mingle with the crowd. Yet I don't picture her being self-pitying or like Cinderella, at least until Elsa finishes with her. I wonder if at some level she doesn't already know she has a piece of his heart. I like to think so.
