I'd put money on Max providing the means for Maria to have that blue dress before Elsa. Perhaps suggesting to Frau Schmidt that Maria needed clothing more appropriate, and having her get the dress or material? Or nudging Georg to pay for something---as a 'thank you' for opening his eyes to his children? She really wouldn't have need for anything other than clothing. There are stories of how the blue dress came about (pretty sure I wrote at least one, haha).

Ooh, I’ve never thought of that @utility_singer. That's a fun storyline! Max would be a very good choice to have orchestrated this. I have always thought that he truly respected Maria for all that she did for Georg. (And she was his ticket to getting the children into the festival. Maybe he even wanted her in the festival too.)

In the opening shot of the movie, does her apron appear to be sewn to her clothes (as opposed to tied around the neck)? I'm guessing that she left the abbey when she was supposed to be doing chores. Attachments:

All of Maria's clothes very modestly cover her up to her neck. Even the blue dress, which has a slightly bigger neckline still covers her collarbones. Then the Laendler dress is much lower cut. Do you think there is any significance to this? Attachments:

Do you think there is any significance to this? I think that the Laendler dress is inspired by the traditional austrian dresses. If you notice Liesl's dress during the reception, it has a similar cut.

I was thinking about the blue dress today. I like going back and forth on why she picked it for dinner after her return from the abbey. On the flip side, why do you think Georg thinks that she picked it? He doesn't know about the bedroom conversation with Elsa, of course. Still, does he think that she picked it that night to look pretty for him? To try to change his mind about marrying Elsa? Does he think he had nothing to do with it and that's just the dress she randomly picked for dinner?

It's a subtle one this, because Elsa is always wearing a much more eye-catching outfit than Maria, the red stunner on the balcony when Maria wears the blue dress. So it's not so much that Maria's dress catches his eye.
Also, Maria has only 2(?) dresses, so poor dear, she hasn't got a lot of scope!
There is always the rather depressing option that G doesn't notice - sad but quite possible I'm afraid.
Maybe he was just aware that she 'looked lovely', right into her mind? That gets my vote!

It was the dress she was wearing when she got him to sing. Their first 'connection'. Of course she picked it on purpose.

Is there a poll somewhere on picking your favorite of Maria's dresses? I thought there was, but I can't find it. Please point me in the right direction if you know where it is. If not, maybe we need one?

I don't remember ever seeing one; we had Elsa's dresses (I think!).
Let's have one!

I'll work on it. Though, maybe I'll do descriptions instead of pictures, so I don't max out our available space. Or maybe I'll do links to the screencap sight. I don't know yet. I'll figure something out.

So I kind of have this head cannon that the "awful" dress Maria wears in the beginning was the first thing she could afford to buy as an adult after running away from her uncle's farm. Idk probably sounds silly, but it's my head cannon, lol.
I also had to wonder why she wore the blue dress to dinner, and really love the takes here. I definitely don't think she did it with malice, as she was rather miserable/depressed through out the day, but perhaps subconsciously, as said here.

OH so many wonderings...I will just plop them all down ....
What do we think are the chances that THIS dress is the only one left in her closet when she arrived? Do you think Georg got rid of her clothes in a fit of despair, but chose to leave 'that one'? (or maybe they were ordered to be laundered and stored in the villa?) He has already eradicated his wife from the house, you might think he would do the same for Maria; but there's just too much 'special' in that blue dress.
Or maybe, like you have said, Maria is just girl bossing it and picks the blue dress? However, I am a little less inclined to this is the statement dress. After all, Elsa has pointed out how much Georg likes this dress and could not keep her eyes off her. What message does it send if Maria chooses this to wear to dinner after she knows Elsa and Georg are engaged? Especially when she is heartbroken?
OR do you think there was some kind of 'event' the evening of the Gazebo scene that dress-up was required for? Given the gaps we have already seen in the movie, we can't really say with certainty that the Gazebo scene happened the same night (although my head cannon says it was)....I always thought Elsa was over-dressed for a dinner at the villa in her red outfit, even by her standards. Did they have to go out somewhere? Was there some event that night that just finished it for Georg?

I don't think he gave away her clothes yet. I think he was still hoping for some miracle that would bring her back to him. And RM provided it. Maybe the blue dress was her "dinner dress". They all seem dressed up for dinner, so maybe this is what she wore every night to dinner since it was her nicest outfit. This would make the choice not about making a statement to Elsa or even to Georg, but just the logical choice since she wouldn't want to show up to dinner underdressed. Possible? Though, then why would Elsa call it the dress she was wearing the other evening. She would have said, now where is that dress you wear to dinner. Idk. The dress choice is a mystery. Maybe you are right Chris&Byng, and there is some reason that Elsa is dressed so fancy that would also require Maria to be wearing her fanciest dress. Not sure what that would be. If G&E were going out on the town that would not impact Maria’s dress. Maybe they had a guest for dinner? Though, then that person would still be there after dinner, I would assume. Hmmm.

My headcanon has always been that Elsa had been hoping to go out on the town but that Maria’s arrival disrupted her plans. I haven’t got a clue about why the blue dress. But I do chuckle at the idea that the two women are fighting it out with their choice of dress while clueless Georg is wearing is usual dinner suit.
