I know this picture was posted in the past, but I couldn't find it. This was the moment that, when others of you came across it, I was skeptical - I thought it was a coincidence that they were looking in each other's directions in a crowded room - but on the big screen yesterday there was NO doubt. Awesome! Isn't it fun to see it on a big screen? I saw it back in March in my city and that was before I knew you all existed and sadly I had no one to point out all these delicious cinematic morsels to me! I feel like I have been watching this movie for years but I hadn't really seen it until recently. Does that make sense? You all have rather opened my eyes, its delightful! I shall just have to "force" myself to go see it on the big screen again next year so I can pay closer attention all around. I went back and watched that scene again after your post and they are flat out staring at one another. Cut the tension with a knife, no one else in the room exists, drowning in my swirling vortex of emotion (or maybe that was just me...it was kinda hot Despite the children's winning performance and his obvious enjoyment of it you can tell that what just happened on the terrace is still heavy on both their minds. They aren't exchanging "aren't the babies so cute and talented" smiles. In fact, neither of them is smiling--or breathing. Perhaps this is one of those situations that Maria was referring to when she delivers her famous line about the times they look at each other and she could hardly breathe. And it happens so quickly that you'll miss it if you blink. More clever choices by Mr. Wise. I think a man who felt less would have given the governess a perfunctory "well done" smile and headed in to dinner. Our Captain looks more like he would rather have her for dinner instead.

I've caught that glance a handful of times, and to be honest there's so much there that I just don't know what to do with it. It's the kind of moment that makes me feel like I literally need to sit down and just stop. But I can't.
Really puts you in Maria's shoes and in her head, doesn't it?

Thank you, for posting that Augiesannie. I have never seen that. It always happens so fast that I try to find them in the scene but I never have. Your going to have me go back and watch it. Not that one needs an excuse to rewatch this classic. Not to mention that Elsa also looks incredibly uncomfortable. Thinking about what happened and now noticing that Georg is sharing a glance with Maria. That more than cemented her resolve in pushing the two of them apart and scaring Maria way. I really heart this movie and Wise's attention to detail. Another moment I would like to point out... That really speaks to the level of awesome editing in this film. As Maria is teaching Kurt to dance the Laendler you can watch as Georg walks towards them from the ballroom in the background. He watches his guests, then starts to turn around towards Maria and the children. Then perfect cut to a close up of him, finishing turning around. And not to mention that they are perfectly in sync (dancing) with the guests!

Yes, there's something I love about the two scenes going on together here, with the way the Captain looks so at home wandering through the ballroom until he sees what is going on on the terrace. Then his initial curiosity followed by That Look as he puts his gloves on, after which the two scenes join up into one.

OH. MY. WORD! I have never even noticed that before. I am going to have to go back and watch that scene again. They are completely locking eyes on one another. That is one intense stare down and they are definitely still thinking about that dance that just happened. I've been watching this movie for I don't know how many years and have seen it upteen times and have never caught this moment before. It's like they are completely entranced with one another and trying to figure out what just happened. You can see the nervousness and trepidation on both of their faces. They aren't paying attention to anyone else in the room, not even the children. Wow, that just made me look at the Laendler in a whole new light. It has always been my favorite scene in the movie and yes, acid.milque, about that moment when he is just nonchalantly walking through the ballroom. It's like he's trying to get away from all the pomp and circumstance for a brief few moments and watching to see if anyone is noticing him slip away to watch his children (and their governess ).

Someone brilliant here had pointed out that glance across the room some time ago, and I thought it was just a coincidence, as I noted above. But utility_singer will attest that when I saw it on the big screen, I gasped and grabbed her arm. It was so obvious. Of course, it then makes his breezy "you can if you want to, Fraulein" a few minutes later all the more .... whatever.

This is making me think of how rattled Maria is when she calls the guests into the great hall. I feel like I've seen a lot of fanfic interpreting this as her nerves to being in the midst of the ball, but in the context of the Ländler, well... I look at it this way: she hid behind that pillar not to avoid stealing the children's thunder in some way but so that she could put something physical between her and everything that had just happened, and it happens that she put herself in his direct line of vision and could not stop herself from staring when she thought he wasn't aware.
But indeed, he notices everyone and everything...
It all fits together so perfectly.
Julie and Chris are bloody brilliant. The meta levels of acting and cinematography throughout that whole portion of the film... yeah, don't mind me, I'm just going to sit in a corner for a while and fail at sorting out all of these feelings.

I don't think she's nervous about being in the midst of the ball at all, I think she's still reeling from what just happened between her and the Captain. She definitely wasn't expecting to have a moment like that at all and while they are dancing you can see the uncertainty and nervousness over being touched by him in such an intimate way. All these feelings that she has never felt before are surfacing and she's not yet sure what it all means, but might have a faint idea about it. He's completely taken with her at that moment and I think he totally forgets that there is anyone else out there but them. He finds it endearing and exciting that he can have that kind of effect on her. She tries to hide behind that pillar, but just isn't very successful. He can't help but stare at her. I believe that he's even glancing at her during "So Long Farewell" at the end of Gretl's part. He looks in her direction and gives kind of a nervous smile. This is suppose to be a night about Elsa, but he can't stop thinking about Maria. His nonchalant attitude towards Maria joining the party when Max asks is his feeble attempt to sound indifferent about it while hoping that he isn't giving himself away again in front of Elsa.

Sorry, one more quick observation about this scene. I just viewed this picture on my phone and focused in more on the two of them. He is definitely looking at her. His eyes are shifted in her direction. The other thing is that everyone around them is smiling and appearing to have a great time while the two of them are just staring at each other like there is no one else in that room, no smiles, just intense staring. They are saying so much to each other without saying anything at all. I sure would like to know what it is going through their heads at this particular moment and if you look at Elsa, it looks like she has noticed this intense brief stare that they have with one another.

Yes, that's what I was saying. She's not even thinking of where she is in that moment. Her head is still out on the terrace.
I dunno, to me they're both so slammed with what happened during the Laendler that they don't really know what they feel and think, just that it's there. Judging by Georg's responses to Elsa and Max with regard to Maria (i.e. her snippy "you thought you wouldn't find any friends at the party"), he has a much firmer grasp on it than Maria does, as you would expect, but he still doesn't have all the pieces put together, and staring at her/locking eyes is just one way that he's trying to sort it out right in the aftermath, especially since she broke away from him initially once the intense stare as they were turning became too much to bear. It takes her leaving for him to realize the magnitude of what happened during the dance and then act on it.
Oh, and never apologize for having more to add!!

I think he's more aware because he has more experience in these matters than she does and perhaps her innocence is one of things that draws her to him. I think he's trying to figure out exactly what her feelings are and if she's even reciprocating them. They're both confused by it all. The only one that seems to have it figured out is Elsa, lol.

Ok I'm going to tease you all. I have written one of the viewpoints for my fanfic already and now I have two more to do. Unfortunately I can't post it yet because I wrote Georg's viewpoint first and my plan is to post his last so the order will be Elsa's, Maria's, and the Captain's. I'm hoping to have all three done by the end of this upcoming week. I've written fanfic for Christy, but this will be my first TSOM fanfic. You all inspired me to dabble around with it.

Ok all, I just posted the first chapter on fanfic.net. It's almost 3:00 in the morning, but once I get started with something and it's flooding out of me I have to finish it so I'm off to bed now. Hopefully it will be up by morning sometime and ready for you to read. Go easy on me, lol, remember this is my first TSOM fanfic. My fanfic name is BlossomofEdelweiss. It should be the first story up in a few hours and it's only the first chapter, Elsa's viewpoint. Enjoy and tell me what you think.

It reminds me very much of the scene in West Side Story, when Maria and Tony first see each other at the dance in the gym. From there, the rest of the characters freeze, there is total darkness, just spots on the two of them as they dance.
Which not coincidentally was also directed by our wise Robert Wise.

AAAAHHHHHH!!!! I literally never noticed that before and I have watched TSOM a. lot. Thank you so much for posting the pic!! Those two kill me, I have no words. And did you guys catch Georg's glance towards Maria right when Gretl finishes singing during so long farewell? He's actually smiling and it is the most heart tugging thing ever. (and Elsa notices...perhaps this is her tipping point to go talk to M when she goes upstairs??) Also reminded me of the quote "the best kiss is the one that has been exchanged a thousand times between the eyes before it reaches the lips" <-- M and G right there

I think that is the point where she decides to go up there and have a little chat with Maria.
