i have seen it and it was totally excellent. i don't want to raise the ire of the die-hard CP fans, but james garner is definitely one JA co-star that can melt my butter. it was considered (still is) a very controversial movie because it has a lot to say about hero worship and cowardice and LOTS of anti-war overtones. this was during the vietnam war. the truth, however, and i don't want to get all political (who does?) that the movie is not necessarily anti-war, just anti-glorification of war or those who die in war. hard to explain. and of course, there is a love story. and JA is so good. and james garner. and julie and james together.
of course they were in victor/victoria together. they also did a tv movie called 'one special night' and i love it... total brain candy... and also available at youtube.

I've seen The Americanization of Emily. It took me about 3 times watching the movie to understand the whole thing. I also have a VHS colorized version where Julie is to-die-for in a red dress when she goes to that little party James Garner has.
If you want to buy Mary Poppins I might suggest waiting a year. 2014 will be the 50th anniversary and I think they're coming out with a new DVD/blu-ray for it.

Haven't seen this movie, but I'll have to add that I like James Garner, too. I used to watch Rockford Files back in the 1970's. I also liked him in Divine Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood.

I've not seen it, but I'd really like to. I think it appears every so often on the cable's video rental option.

I first saw Mary Poppins when I was a child, after listening to the soundtrack record a lot. For the longest time after that, I kept pronouncing the word "chimney" as "chim-a-ney."

I didn't see Mary Poppins until much, much later, but the saddest part was my father had to point out that starred Julie. Luckily by the time I did see it I knew she was the star so I wasn't surprised.

I haven't - do you recommend, gothic? It received poor reviews when it came out, but for some reason I absolutely love it. It is my 2nd favourite JA movie (right behind TSOM)

i agree w/ gothic... it really is a good movie. the whole cast is great and if you aren't in love with james garner after this movie, you need to watch it again. and julie is excellent.

I have this movie in Black and White and also in Color. It is a great movie. I have it on my Ipod. ~Josephine I didn't know it was in color. Interesting I truly enjoyed the film. Yes their chemistry splashes of the screen. But I must say it was even more noticeable in One special night.

oh, One Special Night is so sweet. julie and james together is just so great. i love the part when they are walking in the snow after the car gets stuck in the ditch and she falls on her face... then he has to carry her. their bickering at the beginning is just... my kind of thing.
you can kinda see her fall and get carried and i just want to say that i LOVE LOVE LOVE the way JA says, "little girl" always have. like, forever.

I'm sorry if I'm going off topic here. I know it's not about the Americanization of Emily….
Yes I’ve watched One special night a dozen times in the last 2 months. One of my favorite scene’s is when they just arrived in the cabin and he goes out for some wood. “You’ll go hunt and gather, while I knit something for the harvest ” While he’s looking for wood she already lit the fire. Oh and I also think it’s in that scene where he asks her name. “I guess if we’re sleeping together we should know each others name.”
And when he comes in with the cigar and she’s reminded of her husband.

we could have a separate thread for One Special Night, I suppose. do you know they have OSN fanfic? not a lot and not really much to get excited about, but it's there.
