Hey I am back after a start of term hiatus (because honestly, being here is a bigger time sucker for me than any social media accounts combined!). But Annie, you will be pleased to know the Instagram account gave me a push to come back and see what is up!
I am one of the 'no' voters in this poll mostly because Georg and Elsa have ZERO chemistry. That is what makes Georg and Maria a far bigger sizzle (is that a thing?) Here's my deconstruction of the "no" side:
1. returning from Vienna in the car with Max: Max makes a joke about Georg always rising to the occasion: Max is gleeful, but neither Georg nor Elsa look a) scandalized or b) knowing. It's just blank. It's also apparent Elsa tells Max everything (all the teensy weensy disgusting details), so I don't suppose Elsa, at least, would hold back if she could flirt it up in that moment.
2. Georg's still wearing his wedding ring.
3) when Georg and Elsa wander about the grounds after arriving at the villa, there's absolutely NO SPARK. (Did I mention there's ZERO chemistry between them?). Even if he didn't love her, he could be far more demonstrative/touchy-feely than he is, besides Max isn't anywhere to be seen? I think their time together in these scense are the most neutral interactions one can get while holding hands. He's looking dead ahead, the compliments are superficial, Elsa is trying to pull SOMETHING...ANYTHING from him... I will give them ONE moment of 'vitality' when this happens:
movie-screencaps.com/the-sound-of-music-1965/page/42#foobox-1/39/sound-music-movie-screencaps.com-7420.jpg?ssl=1 but it's more like joking around and less like flirting, especially when Georg calls Elsa lovely and the compliments are very superficial (which Elsa seems to love) - parties, wardrobes, hostesses... I don't know about you, but if Georg and Elsa were "involved", this scene would be much different than it is.
4. "Searching just like you [insert puppy dog eyes here] but Georg just looks terribly uncomfortable (perhaps the most emotion we see with him and Elsa interacting to this point) and pats her hand and heads for the villa leaving her behind. In this case, chivalry is dead. Even today, the 'average' man would steer his lovely lady ahead with an arm in the direction they are going.
In the movie, Georg is leaving Elsa behind a lot when you think of it (there's another post for another day)
There, smackdown complete. Have a great Monday
