Alice in Wonderland? I absolutely love these costumes.. Attachment DeletedAnd this! I know it's not the first time we see the nightgown, but it does look sweet! It's better than the tent, though it would have been more appropriate. Unless Liesl lend her one of her late mother's nightgowns.. I just can't imagine Maria -or any nun- wearing such a nightgown in the Abbey.. Attachment Deleted

They've made Laura Benanti up to look more harsh/older. She's only 34, to Carrie's 30.

we'll miss you Lisa. I still think Stephen looks too young. I like the pageboy on Maria more than the braids, wonder if that's a change during the show or overall. I like these playclothes even more than the movie (although I'm not sure something this busy would hve worked in the film) I like the "tent" nightgown more than this one. Thanks so much for posting!

The wedding dress! Not so sure what to think of it.. I like it, personally, but I don't know if it's the right choice for Maria? theatreobsession.tumblr.com/post/69094481123/carrie-underwood-as-maria-von-trapp-in-the-soundI agree with you now on Stephen looking too young.. Especially because of the yummy source of material we can compare him with.. I like these playclothes better as well.. My enthusiasm and curiosity increases with every promotional still, and every second..

That wedding dress is wrong, wrong, wrong. Isn't right for the character and it doesn't even look that good on Carrie. The nightgown/dressing gown is all wrong as well. I do like the pageboy. Stephen looks too young. Carrie looks too old.

the wedding dress is pretty. but not for maria.
the hair... i think braids were an unmarried thing. so perhaps the change in hairstyle is related to her marital status. i like it down better, too.
the costumes are gorgeous. my comments about elsa's youth was based on rehearsal footage. the actress looks younger without the make up.
still holding out for total criticism until the live show.
lisa, wish you could live us for a day, too. not sure you could stand my family for more than that.
anyway... later.

agree on all points - we are remarkably harmonious! That wedding dress is so wrong for her.

Well I'm positive I'm way worse, so I think I'll fit in just fine ;-) Perhaps you'd be glad to be rid of me after the live event has ended.. ;-)
It's 11:40 pm now, so I should probably get myself to bed. Hope you have a great time watching The Event.. Ladies, this young lady who fancies the Captain, wishes to say goodnight to you!
*clears throat theatrically*
So long, goodnight, have fun for me as well!
Thank you. I'll tell the Captain you said hi. He'd love to join you, but.. Yeah. You can probably guess. I'll close the door behind me. Toodles!

I just want to say Thank You (that was fun to do!) for that amazing chat you had going on at the FB Group. I woke up at 2 am to my phone who kept buzzing, because of the many notifications I got from FB, lol. Went through it this morning and had a great time grinning and laughing. I quickly downloaded and scrolled through the video file this morning, and I agree with Carrie's acting, though I'm really impressed with both Audra and Stephen. Stephen and Carrie might not have the best chemistry together, but it's mainly Carrie's face that remains expressionless. Stephen does really try, and succeeds imho, it's just too bad that Carrie's not at the same 'level' as he is. It would have been better otherwise. The forgotten line made me cringe. I feel bad for the man. Though I think Stephen stepped in and took it over quite well. The finale almost made me cry. The tears were there, and nearly fell. The last shot was beautifully done. I really need to find the time asap to properly watch this - it looks promising, if only for the pillowed hat and the silly bows.. Oh! and (finally!), of course: the Captain's medals.. Though one crucial decoration is still missing. Correction: They might have altered it to this instead of this (or this cleaner version). Which would make sense, given the fact that there are three alternatives of the Maria Theresien Orden. For those who would like to expand their collections filled with riding crops, colognes and all other possible memorablias.. Here's your chance: this and this. Alas, I can't really tell, we don't get a proper shot of his uniform. Ugh. I also thought that the Captain was meant to stand behind the piece of wall that rises when Maria's at the front of the aisle? Now he's standing in front of it.. Oh well doesn't really matter, perhaps. The looks he gives her then, at that moment. Oh. I died. At least the bishop was there in time. Kudos for the bishop, yay! At one point, Maria reminded me of a KLM stewardess.. Don't like that outfit (it's the one she wears when she gets back from the abbey).

Lisa, this was almost as good as having you with us, thank you! I think you are exactly right, he was trying but she was expressionless. I don't see why someone just didn't encourage her to emote a little bit. If you know the story of how Moss Hart worked with Julie Andrews that intensive weekend - that might have worked wonders...

i agree with a lot of what you've said. carrie's acting was subpar. but i honestly didn't think stephen's was much better. more expression but he seemed almost bipolar... angry, then not angry, then serious, then more serious, then angry again, then depressed... like he couldn't decide. and he kind of leered at maria in a weird creepy way to me.
that said, i'm glad they did it, a lot of people actually liked it, which is good, i guess, and no one thinks it was better than JA and CP. i gained a better appreciation for the movie but not because of the actors. the stage version just moves crucial parts of the movie that we love too fast... why how maria gets sent to the villa, how maria and the children get to know each other, G's inner struggle re: elsa and his loneliness and the state of politics, how they fall in love... of it just happened because it was on a stage and couldn't benefit from clever editing and montage. the laendler, the gazebo... everything we love about the movie just couldn't be reproduced on a stage in the time alotted. even if they had all the time in the world, i doubt it would have worked on the stage, not to even come close to the beautiful way the movie does it.
not sure i'd buy the dvd now. the soundtrack, maybe. my thoughts. without coffee. so... subject to change. or at least be clarified.

I see what you mean. I guess I'll have to watch the entire thing to word a well supported opinion. So perhaps I'll alter my opinion in the end..
I've only seen like, a quarter or so. I'm planning on uploading the video on my iPad tonight and watch it while my parents watch The Voice.. I'll have a chat with myself lol (or should I saw ROFL? Or ROLF? (What does that one stand for in this context anyway?)), and will post my thoughts later on I guess..

i wouldn't go by my opinion. while i stand by it because i can't help it, i think most people thought SM did a good job. and i think i can appreciate what he did since he didn't always have carrie to work off, but... anyway. i hope you enjoy it.

I think I will.. I know I will!
First impressions were really good, and from what I saw, I really like Stephen. Still, will need to watch it as a whole before I really judge it, I think. But as I said, what I saw, did look promising. And no matter the outcome, I still would buy the DVD (if only there was more info on a possible international release), even if it's only for the sets, most of the costumes, Audra.. And Admiral Von Schreiber who messed up.. And Stephen's occasional smoking hot looks.. Or am I the only one seeing these?

No, there were a couple of times when I thought Stephen was pretty darn hot. Then he'd have another scene with Carrie and that would just ruin it.

yes... found myself hoping there would be some kind of sacrilegious twist and he'd sink his vampire fangs into maria just to get it over with and then pick elsa. if my facebook is any indicator (and i'm soooo popular, so you know it really is /sarc), a lot of people watched it. and i dare say a lot of people are reading TSOM fanfic now, too.
there are no losers, here. even the NABC (national association of butt chins) is having a good day.

Soo I watched it, finally! My thoughts? Alright, let's see..
The true stars of this evening? Audra. Laura. Stephen's good looks.
The minor bloopers? Carrie's tripping, Louisa who gets her lines wrong.. Elsa's dress which gets caught under the man with the order's shoes.. Is that Baron Elberfeld? Can't really remember..
The major bloopers? Admiral Von Schreiber. Really, the man only has like, three lines, and he fails to deliver these.. Three! Come on man, you only had ONE job.. Ugh.
Furtermore, Carrie's acting, though she did a good job with the crying. Somehow I like her a lot better in the first part, than the second. Sadly, there's almost no chemistry between Stephen and Carrie.. He does give her some damn hot looks, but it seems she's immune. I blame her. I would be grinning like a sixteen-going-on-seventeen girlie without front teeth or something.. Anything better than her coldness and aloofness.. Them dancing together? No sparks. Not from her side, anyway. He looks at her adoringly, though I feel he's acting like a lovesick fool later, with that remark about the soft white dress.. Anyway, the way she laid her hand on his arm, saying "I don't remember anymore.." That wasn't sounding or looking like insecurity, or as an apology.. It was like: "Back off, creep! I'm going to be a nun, I don't want ya."
Hmm what more? I love the exchanges between Elsa and Max.. They're cool. Love many of Elsa's outfits, the one with the red pants has a lot of similarities to the lake outfit in the movie.. Her sarcastic remarks are gun, but could need a bit more sting to it.. She doesn't really seem like a rival to me..
My favourite kid is Brigitta, I simply adore her. Marta is my least favourite, she makes my blood boil, not sure why. As for the boys: during rehearsals, I really liked Friedrich, but now I like Kurt way better. Friedrich seems like a chagrin to me, very much unlike the very likable Friedrich from the movie, who obviously had a crush on his governess. This kid really resembles his stern dad. Wrong side of the bed, Freddie?
What I don't get, is that they're not alowed to sing or play and so on, especially not in front of strangers (which were his "friends/enemies" only seconds earlier, but okay).. But it's no problem that Georg storms into his house, coming from a terrace filled with Sakzburger snobs, with Gretl riding piggyback on him. Or am I missing something?
Also, the small conversation between the kids before the party.. About Liesl and Friedrich sneaking out and watching them from the top of the stairs.. And then Louisa was remarking about this woman, who was the most beautiful of all, and that she was always there.. Clearly this was about their late mother, right? I didn't really get the reaction of the kids.. Or actually the lack of it..
I'm sure there's more to talk about, and I will write more tomorrow if more comes to mind during work.. Which sounds very wrong, considering that I should be working, at work..

The musical numbers are on YT - I did enjoy revisiting "No Way to Stop it" and "Climb Every Mountain" today. Didn't see if there was more, although at some point I wouldn't mind watching again. lisab1991 love your comments! I thought the part with Louisa talking about their mother was very sweet, but it kind of just dropped with a thud, nothing was really done with it. (And I always thought Louisa would be old enough to remember their mother, after all, the mother can't have died more than five years ago, as Gretl is five, and Louisa is 13!). ALso, which lines did Louisa flub? I'm curious. I did enjoy certain things more than I thought I would - the "feel" of the play, the dark edge wtih more of a focus on the Nazis. Did anyone think that Carrie was a teeny bit better at acting when she was singing or crying? I thought Elsa seemed like a rival, the way she confirmed that Maria was going to become a nun, and the surprise she expressed when Maria returned.

Yes, they are talking about Agathe, but it never really seems to work, whenever I've seen it. Probably why they cut that exchange from the movie (among other reasons).
I thought Laura as Elsa was fantastic, especially when she realized that this relationship with Georg just wasn't going to work out. She acted the hell out of that, without even saying a word.
As much as I thought Carrie was out of her league, I am happy that her casting made so many people tune in. I hope it will encourage the network(s) to do more of this kind of thing.

re: louisa's flub... i seem to recall a moment when she was talking and looking a bit bewildered, like she was trying to keep going. i thought i was imagining it, but i wonder if that was it.
she was better when she was crying... her "i think i love him" scene w/ RM was interesting to the point of me thinking that may have been her best acting moment.
i do need to see this again. i loved our chat, but i think i missed a lot because i was watching my computer screen too.
anyway. loved all the comment. i'm still working on the transcript of our chat... maybe later tonight.
