It's just weird that they inserted Frau Schmidt when Maria and the children sang Do Re Mi. It was epic. Lol. Yep, it's fun to watch but you're really going to miss the SOM spirit in there, what the film has

I KNOW! and that weird look on her face... what was that all about. she had it when they were talking about the curtains, too, i think. like someone hit her on the head with a fry pan and she was still feeling a bit daze by it. LOL

Thanks for posting the link to the live show online. Glad I watched it as I had been curious to what it would be like. I have seen the stage show several times before although not for some time but I had remembered there were several differences with the placement of songs, extra songs etc so I wasn't that surprised with those aspects. I thought the sets were really good but the acting was just terrible. I don't think I liked any of them that much! Singing was good, although I didn't think Carrie had enough light and shade with the way she sang each song - they all kind of sounded the same. I'm sure that this may just be an aspect of the stage show with the story being condensed (I can't remember) but I thought it was just strange that the whole edelweiss scene was missing (or did I miss something?). It made the progress of Maria and the captain's relationship just jump several notches. One scene they were arguing and the next was the party and it was suddenly like "he's in love with you" with only a side reference to the edelweiss scene. It just seemed too rushed. Also, same thing with the Baroness. One scene she is asking for the party and the very next scene, the party, she is hiding upstairs faking headaches. It just didn't make sense without the missing edelweiss scene. Just goes to show how good the movie is! Anyway, just my two cents! Oh yeah, I hated the wedding dress too - so wrong

Hey @charleybec, you didn't miss the edelweiss scene, they added it for the movie, and I think you are 1000% right that it was an improvement, because it gave us the sense that something was developing between M&G. I've always thought it was a little awkward, the way he says goodbye to Elsa and the pivots to an instant awareness that he loves Maria. And I hadn't thought about your point about the Baroness' attitude toward the party, but you're right! Then again, the original play was supposed to be more about the conflicting attitudes toward the Nazis; Robert Wise decided (yay!) to make it more about the love triangle, making Max and Elsa non-singing, and giving us that lovely Edelweiss scene.
As far as Frau Schmidt - I agree that she looks weird, but I think her appearance in DoReMi was met to signify something like, "boy, that governess is sure changing things around here..."

that explains why she walked across the stage, but not why she made a stink face. but whatever. acting choice, i suppose.
the thing that i noticed (well, among many things that i noticed) was that SM was practically manic the way he played the captain. angry, then sad then happy, then angry again.
paraphrasing here:
maria: did i say something wrong? captain: (sad face sad face sad face) yes, you said something wrong but said it at the right time. maria: the children did tell me you were going to be married. captain: yes well (scowl, scowl, scowl) that door is slammed shut/bolted shut/closed (i don't remember).
maria: the reverend mother says when the lord closes a door captain (still looking where elsa just walked out the door) somewhere he opens a window, yes yes. LIGHT BULB! turns to look like he is going to eat maria's face... (vampire, vampire, vampire)
he was pleasant to look at and he was a fine choice and he didn't have the chemistry that would probably have brought out a better performance, but... i was diagnosing the captain. he either needs some kind of medication or needs to cut back on the coffee.
now where do i send the bill?

Good points, all. I think I've said before that I quite liked SM when he was playing off of Elsa/Max; those actors were so good, it made his job easier. It almost felt like he was overdoing it to try and draw Carrie out, and it just made everything worse. It comes down to the director----the one in charge of the TV production end was marvy, and everything looked wonderful. The one in charge of the actual acting/stage direction? Not so much. Robert Wise's changes for the screen adaptation were pure genius.

what you both said. can't say it any better. I really wanted to like Moyer, he is great to look at, with that scary edge; his voice was OK. He looked too boyish to me, also. Also - this might be a generational thing - but I did spend some time researching him and True Blood, and I think it made me like him less. I mean, at first glance, yes yes yes passion and violence and risk-taking are yummy. But it came across kind of trashy. That's just me, hope I am not offending any fans. And it's a pretty uninformed opinion as I don't get HBO.

this is my only exposure to him. i'm sure he's great. i looked him up when they announced he was cast and thought his singing was quite good. he was fine, just... i think ginger said it during out chat, he was the cardboard captain that CP tried so hard not to be. one thing is for sure, this production shed a huge light on the awesome job CP did creating a character out of very little. 82 years was too long to give him an oscar, IMO.

I did also like the early scene between him and Elsa where she is trying to draw him out and he is alternatively elusive and affectionate. Another version of the walk by the lake.
I liked what someone said about his performance: he was kind of bipolary, and occasionally how he was acting matched up with what was actually called for.
Agree re CP!!

And for those who are familiar with torrents: HQ versions of the making of special are available for download. After watching this making of special, I'm more excited than ever for this event. It looks awfully beautiful, I mean look at that mountain, the staircase, the abbey! It's.. Wow. I also like the fact that Maria'll wear lots of costumes inspired by Austrian folkloric costumes, like the dirndl dresses. I'm really fond of this still: (click for better (larger) version) The children are sweet, I love Elsa's/Laura's black dress, I bet that's the party dress she'll be wearing. I admire Christian Borle since I saw him performing as Emmett in Legally Blonde (the MTV broadcast actually), but I'm afraid I'll have a hard time getting used to the way he looks like, as Max. He looks like a perv, sorry there's no other way for me to say it. And Stephen is lovely. I like him from what I saw, though I'm afraid he won't be as dominant and overpowering as Chris.. But for a new generation, he's great. A friend of mine is still pessimistic about him playing such a beloved role, I'm sure that's because of his role in True Blood. Never seen that series, so I wouldn't know. I also really started to like Carrie. I must confess, that before seeing or hearing any of the promotional material, I knew for sure that I would give her the benefit of the doubt, and though I don't like her vibrato at times, I think - no, I am convinced - that she'll do more than her absolute best. So, I'm counting the days, and the nights, until Dec. 5 (or rather, Dec. 6 for me) arrives. Yeah me too (with the costumes that is). I never got why in the film it was only the extras wearing authentic Austrian outfits (with the women anyway - aside from a couple of the girls outfits). The closest Julie Andrews got to wearing a dirndl was her cameo on the Muppets:

Perhaps they wanted to avoid looking cliche?

yes. that dress Carrie was wearing during the not-gazebo scene was like a wedding cake, it was very distracting.

Perhaps they wanted to avoid looking cliche? I can understand that, but surely Austrian women wore something other than dirndls. Either way, I don't care, because the outfits in the film are exquisite
