attagirl lisab1991! Way to go, finding a constructive outlet for all that snark! I thought his acting was inconsistent, but no one can argue with an intense gaze, so go for it! (on another board, someone said that he was too angry during "no way to stop it," and that it's usually played as though he's more amused/bemused. But I thought it was a fine interpretation.

Yeah, he can me smokin'. Too bad the whole walk up the aisle, Carrie looked like she was ready to vomit.
And I feel badly, because I really would have liked to have been wrong about her not being right for the role. I wish it had worked better. I think she did her best. Square pegs and round holes, and all of that.

I thought it was great. The whole point of the song is that he IS angry about what's happening, and it sets up the breakup between him and Elsa. As I've said before/elsewhere, I think his inconsistency was directly related to the actors he was playing against. He was, overall, much better with Elsa and Max; and I did like the scene with him and the children when they were talking about why Maria was gone.

changing topic slightly... there were some things that i wish had been put in the movie. the part about maria asking RM permission to look at herself in the mirror. i've played it out in my head w/ JA and it could have been a really great moment.

Utility: couldn't agree more about "NWTSI". I watched it again on YT yesterday, and that moment at the end where Elsa and Georg look at each other with the shared realization that they are going to break up, was one of the very best moments of the whole telecast IMHO.
Lemacd, great idea to think of moments you wish had been in the film! I sort of liked having two Nazis instead of one (let's ignore that one of them flubbed his lines), because it made it less personal about Zeller vs. Georg. But then I guess the film would have swung back over to being more political and less romantic, and . . . we wouldn't want that, would we? The mirror moment would have been nice, although I think it worked better in the play because one had more of a sense of an underlying personal connection between M and RM because of the setup for My Favorite Things.
I liked the little Agathe moment, but as others have observed, it didn't really go anywhere, clunk.

I also really liked Brigitta's scene with Maria, did others?

YES. And while I do much prefer the placement of the songs in the movie, I like in the show how My Favorite Things sheds a little more light on RM, and her character and sets an even more emotional tone for Climb Ev'ry Mountain later. I felt when Audra sang it, it was extra moving because we knew she'd fought that battle and made her choice, but she knew how difficult it was and was going to be for Maria. As good as Peggy Wood was, it was a very different song/feeling in the movie. You got a glimpse of it, but not enough.

I also really liked Brigitta's scene with Maria, did others? Yes. It's too bad they didn't add some of that to the movie. Like her saying something to her father in the blue strawberries scene. Of course, without NWTSI they needed to play up the rivalry between Elsa and Maria for the breakup. Back in the day it would have been extremely common, if not expected, for a man of Georg's station to marry Elsa and keep Maria on the side (though this is a family film, Denise! Get your mind out of the gutter!) and Elsa would have looked the other way.

The two omitted songs, the changes in placement, etc. I didn't expect that to be the reason I liked this production, so it was like a little gift.

She can't imagine anything else. So sweet.

re: the mirror part, i was thinking of the epic final chapter of your honeymoon story. the whole idea of her seeing herself so differently. i think it still could have been a maria/RM moment.
i liked the extra insight into RM background. really helps us understand why she isn't as hard on maria as her position probably would have called for her to be. i love movie RM... she so wise, so patient and understanding. like that person in your life that never seems to get flustered but doesn't judge you for getting all worked up over things. i'm rambling...
re: the brigitta scene, yes liked that very much. i like maria finding out the captain is in love w/ her from the baroness better, but it was cute. and more like how it happened in real life with the children kick starting things.
i think if rolf's part in the escape was more like the stage version, i might have to rethink his toolness. unless he was wearing those shorts. then i'd be too conflicted.

Well at least the children got brown paper packages tied up with strings.. and thank goodness Elsa didn't have to wonder about her harmonica during that night when they all sang 'the Edelweiss song'.. she could have borrowed Liesl's!

At least we got a memorable kiss... But it seems Frau Schräder couldn't care less.. Being a wealthy corporation president etc. What is it with these nuns/governesses nowadays?

another point in favor of the stage version: i prefer the captain saying "we should get them together... the reverend mother and brigitta." over the ridiculous pine cone - silly whistle bit.
thought carrie and stephen's 'something good' was rather, uh... good.

Yes, I've always liked that line. And I was quite glad they used Something Good in favor of Ordinary Couple, which I just really don't like. Though, it does serve its purpose as counterpoint to We'll Make Our Love Survive.
