So, yesterday the making of was broadcast by the NBC. Many of us live outside the US, and have been unable to watch it. I came across the making of on YouTube so here it is! It consists of four parts:

And for those who are familiar with torrents: HQ versions of the making of special are available for download. After watching this making of special, I'm more excited than ever for this event. It looks awfully beautiful, I mean look at that mountain, the staircase, the abbey! It's.. Wow. I also like the fact that Maria'll wear lots of costumes inspired by Austrian folkloric costumes, like the dirndl dresses. I'm really fond of this still: (click for better (larger) version) The children are sweet, I love Elsa's/Laura's black dress, I bet that's the party dress she'll be wearing. I admire Christian Borle since I saw him performing as Emmett in Legally Blonde (the MTV broadcast actually), but I'm afraid I'll have a hard time getting used to the way he looks like, as Max. He looks like a perv, sorry there's no other way for me to say it. And Stephen is lovely. I like him from what I saw, though I'm afraid he won't be as dominant and overpowering as Chris.. But for a new generation, he's great. A friend of mine is still pessimistic about him playing such a beloved role, I'm sure that's because of his role in True Blood. Never seen that series, so I wouldn't know. I also really started to like Carrie. I must confess, that before seeing or hearing any of the promotional material, I knew for sure that I would give her the benefit of the doubt, and though I don't like her vibrato at times, I think - no, I am convinced - that she'll do more than her absolute best. So, I'm counting the days, and the nights, until Dec. 5 (or rather, Dec. 6 for me) arrives.

I watched "the making of" again today, while stuck in the kitchen cooking (yes, it's the day after Thanksgiving. long story).
I mostly agree with you on everything. Elsa looked really promising. Carrie may have gotten her voice under control (although I don't see Maria arriving at the villa in three-inch heels, that struck me as a little off).
Plus I loved the kids. And I kind of liked the "hotter" Liesl and Rolf, that's a good update for our times Max didn't bother me.
As I said elsewhere, I'm a little worried by that brief exchange between M &G: "what's that?" "singing" "but who is singing?" "your children." It was kind of wooden.
Also, I think the Captain is supposed to look a little older than Stephen looks. To me, that's part of his charm. (OK, OK, I'm older too, but still). Chris was madeup to look older. I'm not sure he's dominant enough either although that "straight line! was promising. Sorry, I know I'm repeating myself.

Oh yes, Rolf is a hottie! He's really cute, and I don't feel bad saying I'm ready for him to sweep me off my feet, despite his er.. conviction. But that's just me experiencing a very short moment of weakness.. If you placed both men before me, and I had to pick one, my arms would be around the Captain's neck without a trace of doubt.
I think I'll have to rewatch the special a couple of times more to get used to the new Max.. I might be too much familiar with Mr Haydn.. Perhaps it's the glasses, who knows?
I agree with you on the "woodenness" of that line. And indeed, the "straight line!" sounded promising, but I hope he'll throw somewhat more persuaveness into it, like Chris' version, or his "Get out of that water at ONCE!"..
And indeed, Stephen should look somewhat older than he is, though the man is 44.. Perhaps he dyes his hair, and I'm positive 1930's men didn't dye their hair back then. For all it's worth, I'm ready to accept the absence of the grey temples, but I'll not agree with our Captain without his proper decorations. The man needs his Maria-Theresien-Order. Please.

Yes, absolutely! I mean, I think SM in real life is 40? But movie people keep themselves looking young, I personally think that G being older than M is part of the appeal. It's part of why in that post-puppet show moment, he looks so much like he is just poised to Ahem, never mind. I didn't see what the Captain was wearing in the wedding scene, but I definitely got the impression he would not be in the somewhat uniform-like Trachten at the beginning, and that's another loss. In the play, he has less opportunity to establish himself as the pre-Maria G (because no "My Favorite Things" in the bedroom, no dinner scene) so he's really going to have to amp it up to set the stage for his transformation. One can really appreciate the work CP did with Lehman to improve the script!
Oh, you know what else i lilked? The glimpses of "No Way To Stop It."

Oh yes! That's partly what makes him so sexy, I think. It's clear he isn't some wet-behind-the-ears-kid, he knows exactly what's going on, whereas she is completely oblivious, even more innocent as a rose, so to say. Perhaps that's one of the reasons CP/G is having difficulties containing his humorous smirks?
Nope, SM is 44. And unfortunately, we didn't get a glimpse of what he'd be wearing during the dinner (in that scene, no one was in costume, Maria was the only one who was wearing anything related to the scene, as she was wearing her veil), so no decorations yet, but they weren't present either during the Ländler either, though I must say he looked rather handsome in his 'penguin suit'..

Ooh that's a hard one! My guess is that it's after her return? She's wearing the same dress when they're sitting by the fountain together, with clasped hands and all. I believe SM is wearing the same suit as well, though I'll have to rewatch it and take a better look at it to be sure.
What do you think? All I know is that I love the look he's giving her.. Sigh..

I haven't watched the special yet, but I will. It sounds like they are ignoring the age difference between M & G, and with Max and especially Elsa also being younger will give it an entirely different perspective. To me, part of Elsa feeling so threatened right away upon seeing Maria was seeing how young and pretty she was. That would certainly feed the insecurities of a woman like her.

well they can't entirely ignore the age difference, can they? I mean, Liesl is 16, he's got to be 40 anyway. And no way Maria is 40. (even with all that eye makeup).

that is why i thought the rather young elsa seemed interesting. but i like her... it certainly would make his choices more difficult. maybe. i'm getting my proboards discussions confused...

I guess it doesn't matter as much in the stage version, because they part ways over political leanings rather than simply his love for Maria? In that respect I far prefer the movie version.

Thank you so much for sharing this! Hmmm, It's kinda exciting in a way that our favorite, "The Sound of Music" ,will be in our televisions again. I mean, a good way to introduce it to the new generation. But.. I'm still not satisfied with Carrie's performance as Maria and the way they sang the songs, They changed the tunes. Another is that, the dances. Oh gosh, They look like acrobats(seriously). Liesl (Ariane) and Rolfe's (Michael) scene is something "different", I wished there's the gazebo -sigh-. The acting is so limited (no spin, no jumps at the hills, kneeling only at the abbey while singing "Maria") and so their dialogue, it's not striking. I think this revival of the stage musical is so modern! They put the hills on their set, the villa, the concert hall but can't see the 1930s atmosphere there. Maybe with their dresses -lol- but not like what the film version did. well, I can't stopped them from doing it. Hahaha. Let's go on the positive side. well, I love Laura and Christian as Elsa and Max. Their HCLS and NWTSI is so awesome. Stephen Moyer as Captain is also good. I like his hotness with that Captain coat and his Edelweiss voice and guitar. I also love the children. They are so cool, beautiful (especially the Liesl and Louisa), cute and adorable! I had a chance to talk to Ella(Louisa)and Sophia(Brigitta) through net and they are so kind! I love the blending of their voices. The nuns are great, their dixit dominus is giving me goosebumps. well that's it. hahaha. sorry for my long review to this production. Fans became critics in terms of revival of their favorites.

I guess they had to alter it and make is somewhat more modern, in order to get the new generation's attention. I think if I'd show the original to my neighbor's kids, they'd turn their nose up to it. I think they'd have a hard time entertaining nowaday's kids, when you compare them to the current/last generation.
I mean, when I go babysitting my neighbor's kids, they watch Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network.. When I was their age, we didn't have Nickelodeon yet, I believe, but I did watch Cartoon Network. Where's the good old times when kids were excited about good old hand colored cartoons? Nowadays it's all computeranimation.. Don't get me wrong, it's beautifully done (not always though), I just feel like it's lost its charm along with it..
Maybe that's what the producers are afraid of.. The stakes are high, so to say

re: dancing... it can be more intimate when filmed, but on a stage, it has to be grander or it just is two people (or 8 as the case may be) moving around a stage. boring.
i'm excited. i'm not going to lie. the way they keep saying "this is the stage version, not the movie" may make people give the movie a shot just out of curiosity for the difference. you know, if they've been living under a rock and never seen it before. i don't think we got the full effect in the previews. missing the gazebo... we'll see.

hahaha. Yes it's exciting. It's so modern and cool. I'm relieved when they said it's the stage revival. Thank goodness. But Julie fans (mostly teens) are actually protesting and against to this. You see, I'm one of them. Hahaha. Well ,we are just afraid that people will forget the film when this comes on Dvd or it might give a bad image to TSOM. I just hope it won't happen Ps: SOM 1965 cast will always be the best.

hey. any film that reminds us that parents can love seven children equally, and that a man bereaved can find room in his heart for new love: I feel like I can find room in my heart for this version!!

Okay, finally watched: Carrie: Seems to be toning down the pop/country thing. I hope that continues. And they really need to make her up so that she doesn't look like she's wearing makeup. Oh, and the dress that the poor don't want is far too pretty and well-fitted. Stephen: Hot as hell. Can't hold a candle to CP, but who can? Kids: very cute, I like that they aren't all "professional" sounding Audra McDonald: LOVE her Still don't feel any attraction/sexual tension between Carrie and Stephen, that's troubling.

if they put it all in the preview, who'd watch? besides me? and probably anne? hey, if she's bad, we can mock her. i still say it is a win-win.

Alright, my third attempt of posting this message. I hope I'll succeed now. *sigh*
So, I listened to the soundtrack of the live event.. And I love it. Seriously. The best part is probably Audra McDonald. I love her voice. It's so beautiful, superb, breathtaking.. I never really liked Climb Every Mountain. It was always my least favourite TSOM song.. Until now. I first heard/saw Audra in a remake of the movie version of another well loved Broadway musical (Annie). This particular song will always be special to me:
My current favourite song will be Edelweiss. Seriously, that song always gets me to tears. Stephen delivers it so beautifully..
So the rest of the cast.. What can I say? I adore Stephen as the Captain. I love his British accent! Though it's kinda misplaced, with Georg being Austrian of course, I do think it adds another flavor of aristocracy to him. Yum.
I already appreciated Carrie's voice, I mean it's not exactly my cup of tea with jam and bread, but I learned to like her, and I like her even more after listening to the soundtrack. The kids did a real good job IMHO, can't wait to hear them live. And Christian and Laura sound very good as well.
Which brings me to something else: the remaining songs. Of course, Edelweiss is a song with a huge emotional and patriotic meaning, which always makes me emotional and filled with feelings I can't really explain, and thanks goodness the other songs are more cheerful.
I really learned to like How Can Love Survive? and No Way To Stop It. It's probably the first time I was able to just sit down, listen to the songs and fully appreciate them. I mean, I tried and failed miserably to listen to the original versions (as well as Ordinary Couple). Perhaps I don't like the original Broadway version because I think it's sounding so oldfashioned. Don't get me wrong, I like them (now), but that wasn't always the case, like I said. Perhaps because of the fact that the 'original' Maria was, I believe, 46 at the time, and a lot older than the 'original' Captain.. No matter the amount of botox/make up/ magical potions they would/could use, it doesn't make a difference to me... I just can't 'unthink' these things.. But I'm babbling now. I'm gonna stop. Fingers crossed that this post makes it, otherwise, I quit.

i like audra's voice. she's amazing. the only thing is that i don't enjoy watching her sing. just something about it distracts me. as for the accent... uh, the movie maria has a british accent, too. just sayin'. it works. i never thought CP had much of an accent and yet the children all seemed to. one of those movie inconsistencies that you just ignore because you love the it too much.
HCLS and NWTSI are fun songs... can't wait to hear them sung. the original cast album was a childhood staple so i have always been fond of it, but i've heard recordings of the original stage non-music parts and mary martin just... ick.
i'm totally excited to see this. have we figured out how to watch together yet?

I have so much to say about lisa's post but am just catching up from 3 days away so I will confine myself to the question about watching: most people seemed to want to be over on FB, and moreover, to just use the FB feed instead of setting up a group chat. The disadvantage is that it won't be saved. Proboards probably has a chat feature that can be saved, but not everyone is on it and it's harder to get into. Thoughts?

we could do facebook chat or whatever, then cut and paste to share it/save it here on proboards. i've done the cut/paste thing with chat before for less fun reasons. i think that would work. i could try it with the convo we had for the preview show and just see how it works... i'll just do a portion. 'k?

yes, good. I didn'tknow you could do that.... the only thing is that it looks like you can only FB group chat with your friends. IDK if I am friends with everyone who wants to watch. of course I am probalby wildly overstating how many people want to watch and so many of us are not in the right time zone.

Anne Weiss OMG did you see him in those evening clothes Sorry. Also I like some of her costumes. Laurel Boettger MacDonald 11/27, 8:35pm Laurel Boettger MacDonald i blinked, i think. dang. Anne Weiss 11/27, 8:35pm Anne Weiss he'll be back. Laurel Boettger MacDonald 11/27, 8:35pm Laurel Boettger MacDonald he better!
this is what it would look like if i just cut and copied from the chat box. not sure how it would go if i put it in a document which would probably be a better idea since it would be so long. anywhoo.
