I don't think we've mentioned the puppet show bit before, but yes, it is adorably sexy. A man being a good daddy is one powerful aphrodisiac. And times 7, no wonder Maria fell in love with him, ha!
And yes, the way he flings open the gate, and the doors---both ballroom, and Maria's bedroom----whoo! it's hot in here, yes?

Always hot when HE is in the room! (or outside, or wherever...)

I always loved his playfulness before/during/after the puppet show. It showed that he truly is a different man after Maria told him the truth.

Agreed, Mireille. His playfulness and lightheartedness always stood out to me, too. He's so enthusiastic about every last moment of it.

Another moment that stood out to me on my last viewing----the expression on his face at the ball, when he is telling Zeller he'd expect him to be "the entire trumpet section". Such understated fury, I wanted to reach through the screen and calm him down, running my fingers through his hair.
Not that I don't anyway, but.....wow.

I have one that I don't think was mentioned. I love the scene where she comes back from the abbey and he walks out and sees her standing there with his children. The look on his face is priceless. He can't take his eyes off of her. Every last one of those kids goes up the stairs without even so much as a glance from him. He is so intent on her..............and yes, am I the only one or is there just something in the way that he says, "good evening," that just makes you hold your breath?
I have always wondered how long he was standing out there before they saw him.

I have always wondered how long he was standing out there before they saw him. i think he saw everything, the reunion with the children, the way she reacted to the news that he was engaged to elsa... maybe, if elsa had never come out to the terrace, he would have pushed her a bit about why she came back because i think he saw her be crushed when the children told her. how could he not?? even Friedrich is looking at her like, "moody women be moody! she was just singing a second ago and now she looks like she's going to cry!" but elsa did show up, and maria congratulated them and ok, slow clap for JA here, she sold that congrats. she really truly made sound happy enough for them to believe her and devastating enough for us to know she wasn't happy at all. poor captain. so confused. oh, wait... we're talking about gestures. anyone want to discuss the way he takes elsa's hand in this scene with the way he takes maria's at the festival?? gauntlet thrown, people...

Oh the way he takes their hands...........ok, when he takes Elsa's hand here it's almost like this is what I have to do, right? We're engaged and I don't know what else to do and then he has that half-hearted reassuring pat when he heads back inside the villa. His mind at this moment is not on Elsa at all and it shows big time. I think at this point Elsa may even know in her heart that she has probably lost him if you watch the look on her face as he turns around to ask Maria if she is back to stay. I think he's nervous here as well because he realizes he's stuck between having made a serious step with a woman he doesn't love and seeing the one he does comeback again without a plan to stay and now he has to make some decisions and this isn't the time to confront those decisions. He's got to figure out what he's going to say and do. Also probably still not completely sure that Maria reciprocates those feelings because of the way she left. It's a risky situation for him.
During the festival he is all over her. He can't get enough of her reassuring touches. He has to be physically close to her. They are newly married still and newly married couples kind of naturally want that physical closeness. It's very obvious that he loves her, not just only the way he has to touch her, but also in the way he looks at her. I think he's drawing strength from her at this point because of all the emotions he is experiencing with leaving his homeland, a homeland that has changed and been taken over by a cause he does not agree with. Elsa could never have given him that kind of love, adoration, respect, and strength that he so desperately needed from a spouse at that moment. What else can you say except that he loves her a great deal and it's not an obligatory kind of holding hands, it's a genuine I love you and I need you touch.

oh my word... i have a nephew who just got married a couple months ago and he and his bride can't be standing next to each other without some part of them touching the other... usually a hand on a shoulder or back or knee, just so you don't get all gross thoughts about. but seriously, it is like they are trying to win a car or something.
but, right on about everything else.

Wow. You guys are awesome. Love the hand contrast. Isn't there something about how he steers Elsa out of the ballroom after the puppet show that's kind of , I dunno, dutiful? Oh and lemacd I don't get the car thing but nvm.

You know, those contests where a bunch of people put their hand on a new car and the last one who doesn't take their hand off wins it? No?
Sigh... Where were we?

I know those car contests! People would sit for days touching a car with the hope of outlasting the other contestants. I always thought the days without showering would do me in long before anything else. Gross.
And ya'll are spot on about the post puppet show gestures. He and Maria are sort of caught in a dazzling smile feedback loop when he looks back and realizes Elsa is in the room and makes this guilty little jump to take her arm.

He and Maria are sort of caught in a dazzling smile feedback loop when he looks back and realizes Elsa is in the room and makes this guilty little jump to take her arm. Oh yeah, for a few seconds there it's like Elsa isn't even in the room and then all of the sudden he remembers where he is and who is in the room with them. He's not thinking about Elsa at that point. The way he looks at Maria surely does not go unnoticed by Elsa, as is evident by her snide remark about helping Maria become a nun. Apparently we discover later that was not really a joke at all because we all know about that little conversation that sends Maria packing. Oooo, I love talking about this stuff with people that understand me.

Me too! It's so much fun to read thru all the discussion and comments. I've had to go back and re watch some scenes for things I never noticed before! Yall are rather brilliant And I'm not sure whether or not it qualifies as a gesture but I love the little moment after the Captain asks Maria if she was, "this much trouble at the abbey?". She replies that she was much more and he just drops the whistle and walks off like, "I am so going to need a drink..."!

Because he sort of throws the whistle in a huff.

That puppet show moment is my favorite, which is why it's my icon or meme or whatever I'm supposed to call it. He looks like he is going to have her for dessert. Isn't it great here thebeestings?

This isn't so much a gesture but I'm drawn to the scene on the balcony as the Baroness comes out and Georg has been looking at Maria. You can see him visibly tensing up as he senses Elsa's presence. It's an instinctive reaction to almost being found out doing something he shouldn't have been. Great acting on CP's part. Attachment Deleted

There is so much conveyed in that scene which just isn't verbal and it's simply sensational.

He tenses up and let's out a small breath. He also does tap his hands nonchalantly on the balustrade. He is trying very hard to act like he wasn't just staring at Maria. CP uses his whole body when acting.

I apologize in advance for using this as a dumping ground for gifs. I wish he did this around Maria! And look at the way he looks at Maria! ^See how he takes her hand then sweeps it towards him? He looks honoured to take her hand. I am so convinced that his smile (and hers) is genuine. It's all in the facial expressions. So subtle, yet so effective. Amazing.

Yeah, we don't see much of the teasing side of him with Maria, but I can imagine he did. Wish they did have a little of that in there. The only spot we get a small glimpse of it in is the pine cone scene (I'm convinced that the whole little prank amuses him somewhat) and when he playfully taps her nose during Something Good. Alas that is what fanfiction is for I guess.

It absolutely is real; he has said he relied on Julie a great deal to get him through that scene in particular. Also, as he has admitted to being a bit inebriated during filming at the riding school, and their admitted mutual crush at the time, I have no doubt that is real feeling behind that wonderful acting.

Have always loved the way he grabs her hand on stage. Oh and his behavior on the balcony? Even the part where he momentarily relaxes and laughs at Elsa's joke about the yacht is great because it is do human to get distracted that way. Hi nicky.
